Violence is an unfortunate effect of the human condition, but that doesn’t mean that gun violence is acceptable; It also doesn’t give the government a right to infringe on our 2nd Amendment rights. In areas of the world where guns are banned from private ownership there is still gun violence. It may be lesser there than in those areas where private ownership is allowed, however the gap in gun violence is usually filled by homicide all the same. Gorelik, Shackelford, and Weekes-Sheckelford (2014) state the following: Organisms that were successful at acquiring reproductively relevant resources survived long enough to reproduce and thereby pass on the means by which their offspring would develop the adaptations of its parents. Thus, from conception onward, an organism's development is characterized by an ever-increasing ability to acquire and consume resources. Rather than debate which violent traits are biological adaptations and which are not, we posit that all acts of physical and sexual violence have an evolutionary history associated with resource acquisition. (para 15) The issue that I’ve begun to see more and more often is a call to ban the private ownership of privately owned guns in order to lessen gun violence. It’s being conducted an inch at a time. According to Sullum (2017), Hawaii just took away weapons from people who have a medical marijuana card (para 4). I believe that gun violence can be reduced through responsible means that will not only preserve the constitutional rights of the people, but will also increase public safety and awareness. Each type of gun violence must be addressed: accidental death, suicide, homicide, and mass shootings. I plan on addressing these issues through a mixture of public education, public awareness, and an increase in the governmental responsibility to the mental health of it’s constituents. I believe that to reduce the rate of accidental deaths, that firearm safety should be a mandatory requirement for everyone. I don’t think it’s sufficient enough to teach firearm safety to just the owner, or even the owner’s family for that matter. Imagine that your son or daughter goes over to a friend’s house for a sleepover, and they somehow come across a loaded firearm.
Since 2013 there have been 268 school shootings in the United States alone (Everytown for Gun Safety, 2017). School gun violence is becoming increasingly probable. It is imperative that our government and our citizens come together to create a solution and implement a plan to prevent and stop the occurrence of school gun violence. The solution, for some, is to bring more guns into the picture by arming teachers, principals, and other school officials, or place armed police officers at school sites (LaPierre, 2015). For others, the solution is to make even stricter laws regarding gun use or to get rid of these weapons altogether. These certainly are drastic options; I must say that I do believe the true solution is to increase the focus on mental health services and by extension, mental health awareness. There is simply not enough focus on the mental health of our youth and of our students. Mental health services are the most important step to making schools safer, because this solution touches the entire problem of violence at its root level.
Gun control should not exist at all in the United States. Mass shootings have almost become seen as normal event in the United States. What people do not understand is that gun control is not the answer; there are countries with little to no control that have fewer shootings. According to The Washington Post,Finland is ranked number 4 in countries with the most guns despite that they only had 24 homicides by firearm (“Gun homicides and ownership by countries” n.pag.) . In the article Did Gun Control Work In Australia “it is shown that gun control has reduced the problems but it still has not completely got rid of all firearm deaths”(Matthews n.pag.). The number of murders, homicides, or suicides do not go up due to people just owning more guns. Clayton Perry, a staff writer at the University of Maine, even points out “Stricter gun laws were in place during the Assault Weapons Ban between 1994 and 2004, but that didn't stop the shooters at Columbine in 1999 ”(Perry n. pag.). In Iceland, thirty out of a hundred people own a gun and they have zero homicides caused by guns a year(“Gun Homicides and ownership by country” n. pag.). In this day and age, everything is unpredictable, guns are a form of protection for everyone and there should not be restrictions on protection. The U.S. Department of Justice released a data brief that states, “ On average in 1987-92 about 83,000 crime victims per year used a firearm to defend themselves or their property”(Rand BJS Statistician n. pag.). The National Sheriffs Association released that the average police response time is at eighteen minutes while the average school shooting only last twelve minutes (“Embracing Technology To Decrease Response Time” n. pag.). Gun control should not exist because other countries do fine without it , high gun ownership has no link with increasing death rates , and guns are not harmful when instructions are followed.
Every so often the media and news feeds flood with reports of a mass shooting. Families mourn. In the days that follow, calls to action can be heard, and there is a demand for change. Sometimes minor legislation passes, but in the United States extreme change is rarely seen. Other developed nations provide an opposite comparison. Following the Port Arthur shooting in Australia and the shooting in Great Britain, both countries organized for significant gun reform.
With all of the recent publicized gun violence, America is being seen as an unsafe place with a firearm problem. For many years, the government has been talking about the implementation of stricter gun laws to help improve the crime rates and make America a safer place (C-SPAN, 2013). Gun laws in the United States are meant to control and regulate the possession, sale, and use of firearms and ammunition. Currently, the media is taking advantage of the present gun violence situation and it is creating a controversy between the American people. The perception is that firearms are the source of violence and not the people behind the weapon. To help improve the current crime rate and the safety of the public, the community should be educated on gun control and firearm safety. The implementing of stricter gun laws for gun control has not been as beneficial to
Gun violence is a prominent piece of American society, the growing statistics only support this statement. In just 2017 alone there has been over 47,856-gun related incidents and the number continues to increase daily. Beginning with the Sandy Hooks mass shooting, an elementary school massacre, there has been over 1,518 mass shootings over the past six years. Shannon Watts, a concerned parent after Sandy Hooks, established the gun reform chapter of Moms Demand Action. The organization wants to create awareness for creating gun reform legislations. They are supporters of the 2nd Amendment but are pushing to see solutions to help reduce the gun crisis in American society. In order to build responsiveness to this issue, they have created a photographic PSA with Americans as the audience in mind. The PSA is set inside of an elementary school library, with two little girls in the center of the frame holding one prop each. One of the girls is holding the book Little Red Riding Hood, and the other is holding an assault weapon. Moms Demand Action shocks the American audience by using the pathos within the visual appeal of the PSA to establish their mindset on gun violence reform.
A shooter opened fire at a church in Sutherland springs, Texas, reportedly killing and injuring multiple people according to (Vox.com “Gun Violence”). After mass shootings the debate over guns always seems to spark back up. No other developed country has anywhere near the same rate of gun violence as America. The US has about six times the gun homicide rate as Canada and nearly 16 times more than Germany, according to UN data compiled by the guardian,” (Vox.com, “Gun Violence”). These gun deaths are a big reason America has a much higher overall homicide rate. Gun control should be exercised with extreme caution to help prevent devastating events like this happen. I think gun laws should be stricter and should only be carried if you have authority to do so. Police officers and military should be the only ones in need of weapons. Firearms are not toys and should be treated with more caution in today’s society.
There were 327 public mass shootings within America in 2015, in all killing 475 innocent people and even wounding 1,870. As of present day America, this issue has began to exacerbate. Since the past couple of years not only has the number of gun ownership grown, but so have the crime rate within using guns have increased. Numerous people have advocated to slowly recover this issue. Which is why public gun laws should have a greater amount of restrictions because more controlled laws would reduce gun deaths, in addition to that stricter public gun laws would prevent the number of legally owned guns stolen by criminals and would reduce societal costs that are associated with gun violence.
This year, almost every other day, whenever I turned the news channel on, I’d always hear about a shooting. Whether it was a shooting in a small neighborhood of New Jersey or the mass shooting in Las Vegas, all of them would bring the same question to my mind: are guns really protecting people? Many people in this country believe that they have the right to own a gun to protect themselves and their loved ones, and I understand where they are coming from because I’d want to make sure my family is safe too. So I decided to take a good look at the situation. I needed to understand what laws governed the sale of firearms, their timeline and to whom they could be sold to in order for me to have a better perspective on who's to blame: the machine or the human mind?
“In 2013, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the nation had more than 33,000 firearms deaths: 70 percent of all homicides (11,208), more than half of all suicides (21,175), and hundreds of accidental and unsolved deaths,” which brings me to my question, what is gun control? (Perez-Pena) This is a wide term that covers any sort of restriction on what kinds of firearms can be sold and bought. Who can possess or sell them, where and how they can be stored or carried, what duties a seller has to vet a buyer, and what obligations both the buyer and the seller have to report transactions to the government. Would it be nice if all firearm deaths were cut in half or maybe to a quarter of the present amount? This topic get
You hear about it on the news. Mass shootings, people killed, several injured. This is the world we live in today. Our daily lives have been infected by the hate of others. Recent events have caused an uproar on a debate that has been going on for years. Gun control. This was an idea sparked in 1999 and has not had a resting point. Controlling society and controlling guns is not going to fix an issue that has been around for almost 20 years. We must control the access to guns. Ultimately, it is not the guns that are killing people, it’s the people that are killing people.
In 2001, 12,102 murders were caused by gun violence, 17,424 suicides from guns, 366 people died to accidents involving guns, 316 deaths by guns had unknown reasons, and only 154 were confirmed to be in self-defense. 30,708 deaths from guns in total, and only 154 out of 30,708 deaths were self defense. Those statistics are alarming. Guns are not being used with the intent to defend yourself. Guns are being used in today's society for celebration, murders, for sport and gang activity. Guns are used for war, by the police force and on drill teams. Guns should not be used in such instances where citizens can harm and even kill others . They should only be utilized to protect their loved ones, themselves and their valuables, not used as tools of murder, suicide and gang activity.
Should Americans have the right to bear arms? As mass shootings take place in American cities every month, there is always a push by citizens and politicians to enact gun control laws to prevent future horrendous acts of violence. Gun control is a restriction on what types of weapons can be sold, magazine capacity, ammunition type, where these firearms can be stored, to who can possess them and those who can not (Blocher, Joseph and Darrell A. H. Miller). All these restrictions are usually placed upon citizens. Gun control has had a long history of legislations in the United States, but has faced opposition due to the 2nd Amendment. States like California and Arizona handle gun control differently from each other.
In 2015 there was 64 school shootings and over 13 thousands of people was killed by guns in general. As we all know gun violence in america has skyrocketed in the last couple years, thousands of people lost their lives to Mass Shootings to School shootings. To control guns and how they are used in america is a very controversial topic. I believe that to have better control of guns is to have better and more through background checks , to make major changes to gun laws and to help prevent deaths in the united states
Gun control is an important topic of discussion stirring up controversy and debates in the United States of America today. With the increased number of shootings in the U.S, such as the Charleston church shooting in South Carolina and the elementary school shooting in Connecticut, tensions around gun control are heightened. Government officials are split on the issue, with pro-gun control politicians lobbying for legislation on firearm bans and anti-gun control officials fighting for American citizens’ Second Amendment right. The laws surrounding gun control are being taken to new extremes, even violating the Second Amendment which states,”The right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” (Baltzell). This country was built around freedom and inalienable rights. That is why government officials and the citizens of the United States should work together to fight the enactment of any further gun control laws as they put American citizen’s safety and rights in danger.
The United States has the highest rank in mass shooting in Gun Control. In our country, we do not have many laws on Gun Control. As in the US Constitution there is not an unlimited amount to however many guns you may own. And as being a US citizen, the law cannot take your gun without a reason because we all have the right to bear arms as it states in the US Constitution as the Second Amendment in our Bill of Right. With that being said in my own point of view I strongly believe we should enforce gun control, because not all should be punished for the ones who take their rights for granted.
