Illegal immigration has become more of an important issue in the United States since Donald Trump’s campaign for president in 2016. Immigration can be known as the act of people crossing national borders to live permanently in other countries. It becomes illegal when they cross those borders without the legal right to be in those countries. The U.S. has been an immigrant country since the pilgrims in the 1600s and has ever since, been diverse. Most of the immigrants are Latinos that come from Central America, but they also come from all over the world. The current path to legal citizenship is flawed and needs to be reformed to allow rights to be upheld, equal and fair treatment of all applicants, and to facilitate the process altogether.

Immigration reform refers to changes to the country's current immigration policies. However, never has this topic ever been so controversial then now, with President Donald Trump’s and his proposed policies and ideas on how the country should go about securing our borders from immigrants he claims are may pose a threat to our nation. During the last few days President Donald Trump has worked on building a wall on the Mexican border, and his dream (deporting all illegal immigrants) is soon becoming a reality. Many Hispanic Immigrants are saying goodbye to their dream, and are finding ways to cross the border, but every time an immigrant tries to cross the border illegally it is a different outcome. Border Patrols are detecting more, and more immigrants crossing the border illegally, and when they perceive them, the border patrols dispatch them back where they came from.

It was July 1, 2015 when Kate Steinle was shot. She was walking on a busy pier with her father when the shooting happened. The man accused of shooting her was a 45 year old man: Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez. He is an undocumented immigrant that had been deported 5 times already and had seven felony convictions. Kate Steinle died that day during surgery.

Since as early as the 17th century, immigrants from foreign countries came to America to start a new chapter in their lives; and in turn found success in a wholesome way with foreign. Flash forward in time a century or two, and find that the U.S. has gone a little too far to allow so many immigrants to arrive to the point where we let our guard down and allow certain catastrophic historical events to occur (Boston Marathon bombing, 9/11, San Bernardino shooting, etc.). I for one am against immigration due to the fact that if we are willing to go this far to let terrorists be invited into our home land only to tear it apart, then we might as well just limit immigration to a minimum.

How can people make the sacrifice to cross the border, risking everything they must have a better life style and try to make something of themselves? Then it is all ripped away from their families including, belongings, careers, everything. All this takes place because of the debate about the illegal immigrants being deported back for not having permission to be in the United States legally. There are many of illegal immigrants who have made a living here, not committing crimes, but paying taxes just like everybody else. Some people think all immigrants even though they have done no crimes, should immediately be deported. But what good would that do the people who have not done any crimes or have been supporting our economy by getting jobs and paying taxes? Those people who have done no harm should be given the opportunity to stay in the United States.

There are few topics that evoke such emotion as that of immigration. One can go up to almost any person and receive a heavy one sided feeling about the dilemma. Illegal immigration has done much more good to our nation’s economy than it has done to hurt it. People immigrate to this country for many reasons. To find freedom, to escape or to make money. Each of these things being opportunities that just do not exist in their own country.

As time has passed, millions of immigrants have flocked to this country searching for these unalienable rights: “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” With immigrants of the past and present the United States of America became and has remained the ultimate melting pot of the world: races of every color, varieties of languages, different cultures you name it, America has it, and that’s what make our country so special. However, today the immigration system is much more complex than the days of Ellis Island, making it more difficult to get into this country legally. This has given way to a new kind of immigrant: the illegal immigrant. Desperate to become part of this democracy and booming economy, these immigrants ignore laws set forth by the national government and flood this country. But why is immigration such a heated topic? Aren’t all Americans, excluding Native Americans, immigrants in some form another? Recently in the US, there has been a rise on immigration coming from our neighboring country, Mexico. They cross the border knowing the risks but all they have in mind are the new opportunities and better way of life. Immigration is such a heated and controversial topic in the US but it’s something that we have to address. Even politicians and artists, such as former president Barack Obama, have been helping out legal and illegal immigrants on their behalf and have been raising their voice. Immigrants are an essential part to the US and should have the opportunity to stay here in the United States without fear of being deported. They come here for a better education, a better way of living, and help boost up the country’s economy.

Even though we are advertised as the place to come to for a chance on a better your life, not all immigrants are legal in the US. Nonetheless, immigration still remains a tough issue to tackle as the Obama administration continues to contemplate a fix to what President Obama refers to as “our broken immigration system”. The Obama administration promises a fix to handle illegal immigration into the United States, but few results are apparent. Currently, the government is taking a very lackluster approach toward handling looming immigration issues in the U.S. as it seems that no definite answer has been provided to handle illegal immigration.

Americans today, know that there is a problem with illegal immigration. Everyday many illegal immigrants cross the borders. There are between twelve and twenty million illegal immigrants in America. (“Scary Immigration Statistics” 1) The U.S. should make all illegal immigrants register or deport them to their original countries. The U.S. should also make a program so that the immigrants can get a license for legality. If the immigrants do not want to cooperate, then they cannot be in America. The government spends billions of dollars a year on foreign aid. America is trillions of dollars in debt. Most of that money is from the U.S. trying to help out foreign countries. The economy is affected by illegal immigrants because they take a lot of American jobs. Those reasons are why illegal immigrants should have to file for citizenship.
