Danielle Mistretta Research Paper Illegal immigration is a current issue in the US, one that has been sparked by debate and controversy. President Trump further heightened controversy by initiating a travel ban, initially keeping out visitors from seven nations and banning Syrian refugees indefinitely. This sent shockwaves across the nation, as it brought up the issue of how far the US would go to further enhance the country’s national security. Trump’s travel ban is unconstitutional though, even if meant for national security purposes, on the basis of violating multiple aspects of the Constitution. President Trump from the start of his campaign has always had a strict stance regarding illegal immigration. Criticizing Obama’s “home free magnet” policy, Trump wanted to make the nation more secure by increasing deportations. (Rapport) Although President Obama had the “deporter in chief” reputation at the beginning of his presidency after deporting more than three million illegal immigrants, he later curtailed them due to political pressure by focussing only on undocumented immigrants involved in crime, rather than on families, and ones who had recently crossed and were still near the border. (Gidda) He protected immigrants under DAPA by giving out work permits, and unsuccessfully tried to expand DACA. (Gidda) Trump’s new policy, on the other hand, plans on arresting and deporting undocumented immigrants, no matter who they are, if in violation of the law; he is not
