One of my favorite childhood memories is of my dad walking in our front door carrying a tiny, wiggling lab puppy. My sister and I named her Pepper, and she was my constant companion from the time I was eight until I left home for college. Now, as an adult, I still own a dog, and he enriches my life in many ways. Everyone should own a pet because they add value to each phase in life. Pet ownership teaches children responsibility, compassion, and empathy, serves as a health aid for veterans, persons with disabilities, and the elderly, and can even provide security for people who may live alone or in a dangerous area.
The first, and for me personally, one of the most important, reasons to own a pet is for personal security. My husband is gone for work often, and having my dog makes me feel safer than any security system. He is large and loud and has scared many pizza or package delivery people. If he can startle them, he can certainly frighten someone who is coming to my home for less wholesome reasons. He is a great alarm system! When he hears a door open or an unfamiliar noise, he alerts me immediately no matter the time. Some may argue being woken in the middle of the night is a mark against pet ownership, but for a woman who is often home alone, it is comforting to know I won’t be unaware of what is going on around me while I sleep.
While working at a military medical treatment facility, I was able to interact with wounded veterans who owned personal comfort dogs. These are different from typical working dogs such as seeing eye dogs in that they are not trained to serve a specific medical purpose; they are purely companions for people who experience medical conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder or severe anxiety. Simply reaching over to pet or cuddle these dogs calms these wounded veterans’ nerves, slows their heart rates and respirations, and helps to bring these men and women back to a state of normalcy rather than panic. These same animals serve as great companions for the elderly, especially people with dementia, for the same reason. Their are many dog and cat people but you should get a dog. There are many reasons why you should get dog then a cat. Dogs can help you stay fit. They help you make new friends. My last reason is that they can be service dogs.

They have stood side by side through natural disasters, family tragedies, the gift of life, birthdays, and anything else that comes to mind. These furry friends do not judge people for how they look, but show love and compassion to everyone. Dogs help people cope mentally and emotionally, receive sufficient exercise, and create new friendships.
A service dog named Figo saved a young girl’s life. Figo helped the girl walk when there was no one that thought she could. He even saved the same girl’s life for a horrific accident. Dogs have often been called a man’s best friend. So that is why I believe everyone should own a dog. There are many reasons why you should own a dog. They are always happy to see you. Dogs get so excited when we come home and it always puts a smile on peoples faces. Dogs like to snuggle up to you and keep you warm when it’s chilly, especially when they're fluffy and soft. Kids learn about taking care of someone other than themselves like feeding the dog and taking them outside it really teaches kids how at a young age that they are responsible for their own things. Dog owners have a much higher rate of recovery from being sick than non-dog
My first reason as to why I would like a dog is because it would help me be more responsible. Dogs are just like humans they need to be eat everyday and washed daily. I would also play with it every day. By doing these task it will help me be more responsible and independent. Dogs are very high maintenance
Parents all over the world have the same question, should I get my child a pet? Well that question most of the time is no, but it should be yes. Having a pet in the house helps the whole family. It lowers stress and it can help you become more physically fit. Having a pet in the house would help your child, and you, tremendously.

Yes, pets have been part of human culture throughout history, and in American households, they are more common than children. It is reported that 58% of U.S. households have at least one pet, whereas only 35% have children (Whitaker; Witherell 76). Owners spend billions of dollars each year on pet food, accessories, and veterinary care, but apparently pets give back, too (Schellenberg 1). Medical studies show that pet companionship offers concrete health benefits (Simross 14). While only in the past few decades have scientists become interested in the benefits of pets on human health
