Marriage is between two people who make a promise to love one another unconditionally. Currently, many heterosexual marriages are being rushed into due to difficult circumstances, such as teen pregnancy or the need to marry their significant other at a young age. Same-sex marriage, by ignoring gender and separating sex from reproduction, seems to flout this complex of values” (qtd. in Jost “Gay Marriage” 1). Unlike some heterosexual couples, homosexual relationships are based on nothing but love for their significant other. For people to say that marriage is strictly between a man and a woman, they are not fully aware of what a good marriage is built off of. A man can love a man, and a woman could love a woman. With a man and woman getting married, it affects no one’s life except their own. What is so different about a homosexual couple? Why must they suffer from not being able to marry who they want because they fell in love with someone of the same gender? If a homosexual couple gets married it is only affects them. Supporting gay marriage and gay rights does not mean one will become gay, they just understand that gay people are human as well, and they deserve just as much as any heterosexual person does, including marrying who they want to marry. Calling something marriage does not make it marriage. Marriage is a legal contract between a man and a woman. It is the institution that establishes kinship and relations in the family. Marriage is mostly recognized by a state, organization, religious authority, local community, or peers. Marriage is for procreation, education, the unity, and well-being of the couple. Some say marriage is for two people who love each other and ready for commitment. Nevertheless, in the bible times, couples were not allowed to choose the one him or her married. Therefore, the person he or she married was not the person him or her loved. Divorce was not an option; the couples had to learn to love the person they married. Stating this, marriage is not all about love and emotions, but the purpose of marriage. Marriage is unique and universal. Marriage is a strong bond between two people, it is also a rare commitment. Statistics seem to be declining. There isn’t a real reason as to why. People wonder if homosexuals or lesbians are less or more able to form long term relationships than straight people. Everyone should have equal rights to marriage and commitment.

In America there are many expectations as to who people should be and how marriage is supposed to work. From the beginning, marriage between a man and woman has been considered the bedrock of society. Dating back to the 1970s; same sex marriage has been a major issue. In an article on MPR News written by Sasha Aslanian, she states, “On May 18th, 1970, two Minneapolis men made a shocking request. They applied for a marriage license… At the time, Minnesota’s marriage laws didn’t mention gender, but Hennepin County rejected their request” (1). This topic is an issue in marriages and families all across the world today because more and more same-sex couples are choosing to marry.

Marriage, as defined by Merriam-Webster, is “the legal relationship into which a man and a woman enter with purpose of making a home and raising a family” (358).Although most people in the United States, including myself, agree on that definition, there are a select few who do not. Some feel same-sex marriage should be legalized; I disagree! I disagree because of its effects on children, its unnaturalness, and its religious immorality.

Marriage is a commitment between two people who love each other and have chosen to spend the rest of their lives together, this is a pretty standard view of marriage. How that commitment looks from culture to culture can be very different. In the United States, today, marriage is viewed as a commitment of love and loyalty. Legally it is a binding contract between two people giving them the benefits of marriage i.e. tax benefits and legal decision making benefits. The big controversy facing the United States today is that socially and religiously many people feel that same sex marriages are unacceptable and these couples should not be given the same rights as heterosexual couples. For many years, marriage has always been a covenant between a man and a woman which is a nature ordered and a social norm. A family is created by a lawful marriage of a man and a woman which leads to the procreation and education of their children. However, calling something marriage does not make it marriage is a big issue that needs to be discussed in this topic today: Same sex marriage. In facts, there are still two different opposite perspectives between the supporters and the protesters.

Marriage is the formal relationship between a man and a woman, usually recognized by the law, by which they become husband and wife. In terms of legal recognition and acknowledgement, the majority of states, authorities, and jurisdiction limit marriage to opposite sex couples or two persons of opposite gender. Same sex marriage would weaken the definition and respect for the institution of marriage. When discussing same sex marriage, the true meaning and definition of marriage is the topic that often comes up, which is why it is very significant to remember the true importance of marriage. I strongly believe that same sex marriage should not be legalized because it would harm many individuals. If same sex marriage is legalized, the birth rates would decrease, fewer children would be raised by an opposite married parents, and medical insurance costs/charges would rise.
