The question, when should school start has become a very controversial topic over the course of the last few years. Many schools are considering changing school start times to a later time, or have already implemented later start times in middle and high schools. Parents, students, and educators have had mixed responses toward this change. Students are coming to school sleep deprived, and many people feel the answer to this is changing the schedules. Starting school later is not beneficial because many students will not be receiving any extra sleep and this change would only complicate schedules for sports and parents.
Starting school later will affect many things starting with schedules for parents. The mornings are already hectic enough with just trying to get ready before school, so is it really necessary to make that even worse by having commuters, high school students driving themselves to school, and the buses picking up students all at the same time? An athlete from Kansas claims that, “The extra wave of commuters will shift traffic patterns; working parents will need to scramble to find morning childcare; and next thing you know, the whole town has to adjust. School districts shouldn’t have that kind of power over the community.” (http://choices.scholastic.com). Adding more chaos to the mornings is not going to help Pushing back the start time will just make your morning more stressful. Not only will later starts affect the mornings, but students and teachers in the elementary schools are now being adversely affected. Elementary students now have to get up earlier, and so do their parents. Younger kids are less independent and cannot get themselves up and on the bus, which means their parents have to wake up and then get them on the bus. Teachers are finding that more kids are tardy. “Elementary teachers from the two schools that experienced a two-hour change in start time, moving from 9:40 to 7:40, reported that the earlier start had some negative impact on student attendance/tardies, especially at the start of the school year.” according to (http://www.spps.org). If more students are tardy and absent when they are young then how are they supposed to understand the basic building blocks for
First of all, kids will be more energized and be more academically advanced if school starts are pushed back. According to, “Should School Start Later” “Studies show that well rested teens get better grades, have higher standardized test scores, and miss fewer days of school. They also have a lower risk of being in car accidents and have fewer health problems such as depression, mood changes, and being overweight.” Many schools start before 7:45 a.m. and have tired students not putting forth their best efforts while 40 percent of American High Schools start classes past 8 a.m. The schools with later starts
According to a study done in North Carolina schools that start as little as an hour later can cause standardized test scores to go up by as much as 2 percent (Educationnext.org).Two percent may not seem like a lot but it can be the difference between a C or a B on a standardized test. Earlier start times also can cause students to get less sleep which can cause students to perform worse. If students were able to get more sleep they may perform better and actually enjoy going to school and getting good grades while still getting a decent amount of sleep.
Many of my school friends have tried to argue the point that school should start later. All of those friends for which only added their opinion and failed to use scientific information and lost their argument. not only does it have to do with adolescence, but mental health in teens, and educationally. and I heard of puberty? shouldn't our parents, teachers and other people who wake us up at the crack of dawn care if we succeed.
Have you ever wondered about the effects that would be brought if school started later? At the moment, school clearly begins too early. This is a problem that is unquestionably bringing negative affects to many students. Many schools throughout the country are addressing this problem by considering school schedule changes including later start times for middle and high schools. Research indicates there are unfavorable effects to current school schedules, as well as well as positive effects to delayed start times. To best meet the needs of teens, school should start later.
Everyone has always hated getting up super early to go to school. As children get older they move to different schools, from elementary to middle to high school, and the start times get earlier. In elementary school it was never a problem getting up but getting older, it always got harder to get up and the days were always longer. Schools start so early in the morning that it is hard to focus and students tend to miss more of their earlier classes and attend all of their later classes. Schools everywhere should start later because it would benefit the students and teachers.
If we were to start school later, academic GPA’s (grade point averages) would definately increase. Isn’t this what we want in our school? It is proven that the more sleep you get, the more awake and alert you actually are. I interviewed Michael Claffey, a sophomore at Newington High School, he stated “ Goooooud.” Also Jorge Premto a sophomore at Newington High School stated “Yes Michael, yes I do believe school should start at nine o’clock am. This will thus help further my education because I will be well rested.” In all, we need school to start later because it will help us with our education.
The students at middle school south lake Zurich Illinois would like later start times. It won't cost much, and benefits the students and teachers. However, there are some problems. There are many learning benefits that go along with later start times. Such as, less vehicle accidents in the morning, depressed students, and obesity. Because of later start times After school activities, sporting events, and families, could all be affected in a negative way. If district 95 starts later district 95 ends later and people have to be home early. Later start times might cost some money but not a lot. Stevenson high school didn't pay that much. But imagine this: Students might not even have to have an alarm
Transportation is a major issue that would be impacted by a later school start time. For many school districts, including my own, buses are reused for the elementary and high school students. The problem with shared buses is that if the high school start time changes, so would the elementary start time. Elementary students
School starting later does have it’s positive affects it also has its negative effects as well. School starting later would allow students to sleep later, but according to the High Schools with late start times help teens but schedules and after-school can conflict, “potential complications, such as additional costs if buses were added, child-care issues where late-day schedules might prevent teens from picking up younger siblings after school, and implications for teams if they end up playing in the dark.” According to Fox News Megan Kuhfeld says, a student in California,” I enjoyed waking up later than everyone else in the area next to me where there were early start times, but as a member of the tennis team, she had to miss sixth and seventh period classes to compete at other schools.” Although school starting later would give teens more time to sleep, it would cause conflicts between their schedules after
However, schools should not start later because it’s too expensive, it would cause conflict with after school responsibilities, and there is some surveys that shows different results. First off, schools should not start later because it is too expensive. Many schools would have to purchase more forms of transportation for the elementary and high school to start later. In the article, “High school will keep starting too early. Here’s why” Kristen Amundson, executive director of the National Associations of the State Boards of Education states, “The big issue - the expensive issue - is transportation” (Weissmann 4) The mode of transport that schools use are buses, and they are very expensive.
They do not have enough time to even eat! In the article “Parents and Teachers Split over School Start Times” it states “A later start would give junior high and high-school students more time to eat breakfast”(Orr). That is why we need to have school start later. So, we have more time to eat. Teachers also don't have enough time in the morning. Teacher might have kids that they have to get on the bus or they might have to drive them. Teachers and students need more time in the morning to do a lot of
To begin with, schools that have started later have seen better academic results. Many schools have seen improvement in standardized test scores recently due to later school start times. For example, the article “Do schools Begin Too Early” by Finley Edwards states that a school in Wake County North Carolina delayed their school start times by one hour and saw at least 2 more percentile points in standardized test scores. This means that schools that have delayed their start times have seen improved performance and grades in school. In addition, many students have came to school more due to later start times. According to Finley Edwards “Students who start school one hour later have 1.3 fewer absences than the typical student.” This means that schools which have started later have had more students come to school. Therefore, starting school later has many pros including academic results.
I do think that changing start times will help boost academic scores and participation. Erde tells us that “communities that have been able to change school start times, they report improvement in academic performance, a decrease in teen depression, a decrease in tardiness and truancy, an increased alertness in class, and a reduction in teen car accidents”. This quote shows the link between adequate
Thomas Decker once said, “Sleep is that golden chain that ties health and our bodies together.” School. There’s a lot of things people can say about it. Mostly they’re arguments about school such as should school have trimester or semesters? Or maybe school should be year round rather than having a summer break. However, out of all those, one in particular caught my eye. Should school start later? Now me being a student myself, this was very enticing. Being able to sleep more and have a full night's rest would be delightful. I, myself, believe that school starting later would be beneficial for school and the kids going to school. It would have its pros and cons, but it would be an overall positive impact to everyone.
First of all, I think schools should start later. They should start later because it shows improvement in the way students perform throughout the day. A study at the US Air Force Academy showed students that started classes
