Could you live with the knowledge that you deciding to pick up your phone while driving a vehicle caused someone to be injured or be killed? Texting and driving puts others around you and even your passengers at risk of being involved in an accident. Texting while driving takes your eyes off the road, hands off the wheel, and focus away from the road. All new drivers are taught not to text and drive, but they continue to do it even though they know it is dangerous. Teens and adults today have trouble focusing on the road mostly because of smartphones. Drivers need to be aware of their own actions and the actions of others driving around them. We are so used to our phones that we think we are capable of driving while using them. According to the National Safety Council, cell phone use while driving leads to 6.1 million car crashes each year, in which 500,000 cause injuries and 6,000 cause fatalities. People may think they can multitask while driving but really it is impossible. Drivers on the road know it is dangerous and unsafe but they do it anyways. Texting and driving is one of the most dangerous distractions while driving. Nobody wants to miss anything that is happening on their phones. People want them in their hands at all times because we feed off social media. “Studies show that a person who is driving while texting is 23 more times likely to end up in an accident than a driver who refrains from such action” (www.phonearena.com). Drivers need to start considering others and their own passengers, if any. Sending or even reading a text message while driving puts others and passengers at risk for being injured or even worse being in an accident. “One out of four car accidents in the US are caused by texting and driving” (www.edgarsnyder.com). Texting and driving is banned in 47 states according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Some states only have texting and driving banned for inexperienced drivers or teen drivers. Texting while driving should be illegal in all states and not just for teen drivers. It should be illegal because of the percentage of crashes and fatalities caused by
