Many thanks to all those who have participated in today’s debate. It is a question worth asking. It is a question that deserves answers. Should the government be deciding our families? In effect, running our lives? We, the opposition team say, firmly, no. They should not. Even in the world of The Giver, in the supposed utopia of the Community, it is clear that families should not be decided and designed by the government. First off, we see that great sacrifices, sacrifices so horrible to the point of being terrible crimes in our world, are made to achieve these so called, “perfect” families of The Giver. The most obvious of these is the release, or should I say murder, of twins. A mother gives birth to two beautiful, healthy children, and the Community, in their quest for perfect and perfect families, kills one of the two without emotion or second thought. We see this on page 150 as Jonas’s father injects an infant with some form of poison and then, in a sweet, kind voice, says “Bye-bye little guy” as he dumps the child’s body down “the same sort of chute into which trash was deposited at school.” And let’s keep in mind that all of this takes place months after the child was first taken from its mother. A mother who carried the child in her womb for nine long months only to never see him or her. This is a despicable act in itself. Therefore, the Community should not be celebrated for its creation of perfect families because of the terrible acts they commit to create them.
Ponyboy and Johnny did make the right decision by running away after killing Bob with a switchblade. I am on this side because many bad things could have happened if they would have stayed. If they did stay they would have gotten more hurt, they would have gone to jail, and the authority favors the Socs over the greasers. Even though they could get in more trouble when they get back because they hid, it is more likely that they won’t. I think that both ways will turn out bad for both of them, but I think that running away will be best.
In the book “The Catcher in the Rye” by J.D. Salinger, the story describes Holden Caulfield as a mystery man that a rReader would have to find clues to discover the hidden truth behind him. Holden is afraid to go into the adult world and he wishes he can stay in his childhood world, because Holden wants to avoid the adults world phoniness and it's painful for holden to grow up; knowing thats he’s been through so much as a boy and how he has heard so many lies growing up.
Over 7,500 animals are killed in zoos because they are deemed surplus, as stated by Liz Tyson an animals rights activist. This giraffe in particular sparked a huge controversy. HIs name was Marius, he was homed at the Copenhagen Zoo and was 2 years old when the staff killed him with a bolt gun. Marius was then dissected and fed to lions in front of ongoing zoo goers. What got people fuming is that he was a healthy, young giraffe. Therefore I believe the killing of Marius should not be justified.
Imagine if humans were not allowed to have babies. This is what people in the story “The Giver” go through but do not even know it! In their life they have a laborer that delivers the babies and the people in the community (basically a suburb) have to sign up to parent a baby. What if people could not feel love. Population control involves things like abortion and adoption and how both can be cruel things but other times not. Places like china enforce it for food reasons and climate reasons. However, humans should be able to have as many children as they would like all around the world.
Humans have always strived for better, bigger buildings, safer homes, faster communication. Humans have tried to succeed in making a perfect community otherwise known as a utopia. In a utopia everything is perfect, there is no fighting, hunger is unknown, and greed is abolished. Utopias are very hard to create, and must have balanced leadership, limited freedom, and complete isolation.
The Giver Letter Dear, Jordan Hello Jordan, for my fiction report, I am reading a book called “The Giver” by Lois Lowry. It was originally published in 1993. This book is really good, and I have enjoyed it quite thoroughly, and it is something that I consider as a masterpiece of literature. This book is so good that I decided to recommend this book to you.
What's better than finishing a great book? Seeing the movie version of it! You can experience the story in many different ways to see different possibilities and details of that story. I enjoyed reading The Giver and watching the film very much.
We should prepare ourselves for unusual times. Our country is involving to become more inclusive, but some oppose the change. Ultimately, only time will reveal who was on the right side of history.
Stephen King advised in 2000 'I believe the road to hell is paved with adverbs..', our write101x course informed us. I learned this since and avoid the most possible to write adverbs, and adjectives, allow me to add.
The community from The Giver that Jonas lived in is a dystopia. One reason why it is a dystopia is because there are no colors or feelings. That makes it a very boring community. In the book, when Jonas was starting to see colors, nobody else can see them. Also, his mom told him that the word love is meaningless, even though it was the best thing Jonas had ever felt. Another reason is they kill twins. They weigh them, then inject poison into the smaller on to kill that baby. Then they just toss the dead body in the trash like all the other trash they throw away. If you think that a world where they kill babies is a utopia, you must be crazy. The last reason why the community from The Giver is a dystopia is because
Sometimes I ask myself: what if I did this? What if I did that? Would it make a difference? Well, if I did nothing and kept wondering, I would never know. What person does is more important than what a person thinks because actions can affect others and accomplish goals.
In The Giver Jonas’ community the government is very strict about children and who is allowed to give birth to them. In the community you have to be assigned the job of birth mother to be allowed to get pregnant. The women that are pregnant carry the baby, give birth and then do not get to see the baby. In simpler words the birth mothers have babies for others and the child then gets assigned to a family. It’s horrible that the birth mothers don’t get to see the child because in our society that is one of the most exhilarating parts of life for the mother and father. Also, in Jonas’ community if the child is “different” or “not like the others” than they are released to Elsewhere. In our world it doesn’t matter what the child looks like or
Madam Glowden gestured me back into the house. I walked with her and Asha followed. She stopped him, asking him to wait outside the house. He paced up and down on the icy dried grass. His knuckles whitened as he repeatedly opened and folded his fists. She closed the door behind her. She sat with me and started.
Too many times in my life have I started a discussion with someone, but wished to end it after only a couple of minutes. Whether it be on the forums of Reddit or in real life, people tend to get hostile when you offer up a differing opinion. The discussion may start civilly, but it often devolves into name calling and childish insults about the other person’s intelligence. In doing so, the discussion has essentially been ruined, as it now has more to do with winning over the other person, than it does discussing the topic itself.
The benefits of bicycling for one's fitness and health are obvious. Any type of normal exercise regimen, followed weekly, is good for an individual's long-term health. Exercise is beneficial for the human body. Sticking to a dedicated fitness regimen helps an individual improve his/her cardiovascular system and lowers blood pressure within the body. Along with following a diet plan and eating healthy, a routine weekly exercise regimen helps keep off excess weight.
