Year-Round Schooling Year round schooling is utilized in numerous countries, mainly centered in Europe. The practice integrates numerous one to three week breaks within the school year, rather than a few breaks lasting a couple weeks and then one large break, lasting around 3 months. Studies show that fewer long breaks, being replaced with multiple shorter ones, increases student retention of information and they have enough time off to desire to come back to school. The practice of year round schooling, however, is met with some adversity, both from students and parents. Students wish to have a long summer in order to hang out with friends, and parents want the long break in order for their families to take vacations, not to mention the fact that child care is not often available on a week-to-week basis. …show more content…
Summer vacation, jobs, extra-curricular activities, all of these things are traditional to the three month cession from school. Indeed, year round schooling will reduce the availability and practicality of summer jobs, and child care for the times where students do not have school and are too young to be home alone will not be easily obtained, but there are many benefits to a consistent learning schedule. Shorter breaks allow for a higher preservation of information, while still allowing for students to relax and take time off. The multiple breaks for a shorter period of time also allow for families to take vacations while not feeling obliged to be doing something at all times. Summer breaks, in regards to the length of time, are unnecessary in multiple senses, as the extended period of time of lethargy increases the likelihood of weight gain and a loss of previously gained
This is how the Year-Round School format would work. Students would attend school for a certain amount of days, and then the students would receive a longer break period. This would be repeated all year long. Primarily, the education administration is taking the summer break and splitting it equally throughout the year (nayre.org). The school districts that Year-Round School will help students, yet it may actually hurt them socially. For example, the long summer break provides students with the exciting opportunities such as camps and family vacations. These are learning opportunities that take place outside of the classroom by teaching young children valuable life skills including patience, teamwork, and tolerance (ltisdschools.org ). Also, teenagers may
Most students enjoy summer vacation, but some educators feel that the summer break is too long and that students do not retain information as easily when they return in the fall. Some people argue that there should be year-round schools, where there would by a 3-4 week break in the summer, a long winter break, and a week off in the spring and fall. I disagree with those people. The biggest problem with this schedule would be the summer break, it just isn’t long enough. I believe year-round school is a bad idea because summer break is a time when students get to take a break, parents may not be able to find a caretaker during the shorter breaks, and schools may not have sufficient funds.
School can isnt easy for everybody. Though school can be a burden already, extending schools to year round may help the struggling students, help teachers financially, and students won’t forget as much over a big break.
The average school period is one hundred and eighty days with small breaks in between and a three-month break during summer to ease students’ minds and let them relax. The Board of Education should make all schools in the United States year-round to increase educational time and decrease the loss of knowledge over the breaks. It gives students the same time to relax and plan family vacations periodically throughout the year, but never creates the stress of changing sleep schedules that summer break changes. Not only is it a good way to enhance education, but it also is better for planning family events, positive effects on budget, academic achievement, and could decrease the absence rate of students.
Have you ever wondered what the difference between traditional schooling and year-round education is? Maybe you didn’t know that there are more than one type of year-round education. A year-round school schedule can benefit educators, students, and even families. Year-round schooling is where the breaks in school are on a balanced schedule. Instead of having a three month summer break, there would be 60 days off and then the students would be back to school. If on a multi track schedule, teachers could use their off time to substitute at their school on a different track or at another school to get paid more. For students, the shorter breaks away from school increase retention rates, therefore reducing the amount of review necessary at
Imagine a school year that gave the students one week off after every quarter and every Friday off. Does this sound exciting and rich with possibilities? Then ask the superintendent of the school district to consider year round school with only four days per week.First, students would not forget what they learned over the long summer. Next, parents would not have to get day care except on Fridays instead of the whole summer. Finally, teachers and students would have better relationships as they spend more time together instead of being rushed. Let’s take a look at some proof.
Surprisingly, money plays a big role in year-round schooling. The article “Year-Round School Pros and Cons” states, “For schools with facility shortages, a multi-track year-round calendar increases school capacity.” This means that to maximize facility usage the school assigns different students different breaks at different times. Therefore, at all times there is always at least one group of students and teachers on break. This allows for the school to run on the same budget that traditional schools
However it can be argued that the more frequent breaks throughout the year will leave students feeling refreshed and ready to continue learning when they get back. In the proposition detailed above, students will have a series of breaks throughout the school year, with the longest being three weeks over the winter holidays. This gives ample amounts of time for families to vacation and celebrate together and hopefully leave the students feeling refreshed and ready to learn when they get back. It was also indicated by administrators that “renewed motivation and continuous injection of new ideas maintained a higher level of enthusiasm than [students] had experienced in their previous traditional calendar schools” and that they fully believed this was a critical factor in improving student performance throughout the year (Shields). It should also be noted that the vast majority of jobs offered globally do not have a summer break, and by shortening summers from 13 weeks to 7, students will be more prepared to enter the work force once out of school, and should have an easier time transitioning into the year round life as opposed to students used to taking 10 to 13 weeks off at
Students in high school can not have summer jobs when their school is year round because they only have short times out of school. (Scholastic 4) Summer jobs are very important for high school students wanting to continue their education. It is also extremely hard for students who play sports outside of their school, because the schedules are different than nine month schools. Students look forward to their summer vacations because it provides them with a definite finish to the school year. . Students work hard all year to enjoy their three months of relaxation. Goal oriented students work for the finished product in May when their school year is over. After the students three month break they come back to school refreshed and ready to continue their education. Having no definite end to the year forces students to become burned out on school, causing their grades to
The year-round school schedule does not take away from students, it simply stretches out the traditional 180 days (source 4). Typically students attend school for 10 months with a three month summer break, often while students are out for these three months they tend to forget
(Wake County) has found that students learn more during the summer while the other kids are on vacation but they seem to learn less during the rest of the school year. Some may say that it can prepare them for the future and jobs because there is no summer break. Also other may say that kids should have a break off and enjoy it while they can and make memories. But that's only so little time in their breaks to do so much other than plan out a ton of trips and all over a longer more enjoyable break. More children would rather have more time do use that time enjoying their
Do you want to go to Myrtle Beach when it costs less during September? With more breaks out of school, you can. Year-round school can be confusing for families that travel a lot. Instead of having about eleven weeks off, you get three seperate periods off of school. From personal experience, I did better when I got a little time off from school. When kids have more time off from school, they can talk to their friends out of school, instead of in class. The new schedule will make it easier for parent to plan vacations for the family. This is why I think schools should be year round with more breaks to improve education.
In the United States, only about five percent of kindergarten through twelfth grade students are enrolled in year-round schools (Hess). This means that instead of having an extended summer vacation the way traditional schools do, these students have several shorter breaks, called intersessions, throughout the school year. The number of instructional hours included in each school calendar is the same, but there is much debate over which calendar is more beneficial. Recent research proves that switching to year-round school calendars is advantageous for students, teachers, and parents alike. The year-round style enhances the education experience for everyone involved because it modernizes our outdated school systems, increases students’ retention of information while giving them, along with teachers, more frequent breaks, and makes sense logistically in a growing population.
Let’s be honest, the school year is long enough. Some people believe that extending the school year affords more educational opportunities. It has been proposed to extend the school year to a year-round schedule with short breaks each season. The school year should most definitely not be extended; keeping the normal schedule will cost less, be easier, and give the students more real world experience.
Year-round school has been brought up in discussion for many years because of the benefits it has on students but the possible negatives on the families and communities. Year-round school schedules typically have between 35-40 days on then 15 days off and 45 days of summer. Schools switch to year-round schedules so students don’t experience such a gap over the summer break. A few years ago some elementary schools in Nebraska decided to try year-round school, specifically Howard Elementary in Grand Island. Their schedule went eight weeks on, three weeks off and June off for summer break while still offering summer school (Schnitzler). They noticed that students that were apart of the summer school program had increased test scores and overall grades, but the majority didn’t change. This school only kept the year-round schedule for three years because they were the only schools in their area that had the schedule so there were many conflicts and the anticipated benefits weren’t there. Currently, York Public Schools doesn’t practice year-round school because it isn’t in our budget, however, they do offer summer boost for the elementary, middle school and credit retrieval opportunities for the high school. Would year-round school work at York Public Schools?
