See Poverty...Be the Difference is a book that lays down a foundation for understanding poverty in the world we live in today. That poverty is not always choice as some people believe it to be, since it is often children who seem to be the ones who are suffering the most from poverty. In the introduction Beagle (2007) states, "This myth of choice continues even with astounding evidence that children born into poverty in the United States (regardless of race and gender) face dramatically different futures than children born to affluence" (p. 7), and in her writing, she does her best to prove that.
Beagle's second goal is to help people in profession settings such as, teaching, social services, health care etc. understand poverty in hopes of breaking the cycle of poverty. In the introduction she even challenges one of the cardinal rules in most of these professions, which is to not get personal with clients. Beagle states though that this could in reality help break the chain of poverty in some cases, since they feel as if someone is trying to personally relate to them. Children lack any power in improving their circumstances and depend on adults to gain access to basic necessities. Access to proper healthcare, education, and basic nutrition continues to be an obstacle for children. Poverty impedes children’s aptitude to learn and contributes to poor overall health and mental health. Perhaps most important, poverty becomes a cyclical nature that is difficult to overcome. Who are America’s poor children? How many children in America are poor? What are some of the hardships that face poor children in America? These are only a few questions that we can ask ourselves when considering children who live in poverty in America. Children face monumental hardships in our country because of poverty or the condition of not possessing the means to afford basic human needs. The economic crisis that we find ourselves in today threatens to cause a dramatic increase in the number of America’s poor children; however poverty in America has long been a crisis that has faced the children of our nation. The wage gap continues to stretch farther and farther apart. A wage gap is the ratio difference between the top twenty and lower twenty percent of income levels. The United States is a leading example of a differentiating income levels. A recent study by Harvard students, showed the United States pay gap ratio from CEO’s to average workers is around 350:1. This is a ridiculous difference in pay, especially when there are millions of people underneath the poverty level. The differences in wages being described is solely targeting skill level and is not referring to any other factors like gender, race, social class, and etc. Society has been dealing with income inequality for thousands of years. Although, it is unfair for people to be paid unequally, but it is also the only way for the economy to run smoothly. It would be impossible for the United States to pay everyone equally because of time spent, work incentives, and executive positions.
In her essay, “All Kids Should Take Poverty 101,” Donna Beegle discusses the issue of poverty. She wants to help people understand and in turn decrease poverty in America. She suggests the solution of educating children in the k-12 system by having them take, “Poverty 101.” In teaching children “Poverty 101” it will help them understand the reality of poverty and not just the stereotypes they believe. Beegle hopes that will help empower those in poverty to help change their situation and will help those who do not live in poverty understand its true causes. Beegle’s solution was effective because she used her own personal stories to incorporate into her argument. Her lack of statistics and facts fail to strengthen the argument.
When people hear the words “child poverty” some assume that this term may refer to homeless children who are living on the streets. This isn’t necessarily true, in fact some children who go to bed every night with a roof above their head still suffer from some form poverty. According to National Center for Children in Poverty (NCCP), 21% of children throughout the United States live in families who are considered poor. It is crucial for society to be more aware of this issue and to take part in contributing to help reduce child poverty within our country.
‘Poverty is on the agenda of the Every Child Matters framework, with one of the five outcomes stating that every child should ‘achieve wealth and economic well being.’ This means is it is important that children experiencing poverty have the same opportunities as their peers.’(CYPW, pg 186/187)

This review is formulated with scholarly sources and references based off of poverty in America. This disclosure is approached with a value free sociological approach, and it will give insight on the social causes of poverty and the effects it has on America. Poverty is a very controversial topic. Many will assume that people living in poverty are lazy, made bad life decisions, or that they are solely the reason for their predicament however, people living in poverty would argue that their are deeper issues for it. Poverty can destroy someone's life. People struggle to acquire and keep access to food, water, homes, and basic necessities. But what are the consequences of poverty other than economical. In this essay I will show that poverty can and does have negative impacts on mental health, people’s social interactions, and their physical health. People in poverty don’t just lose their money, they can also lose quality and life. In this essay, I will focus on the social, mental, and physical tolls that poverty has on people. I want to look at the changes and impacts they cause, and I want to convince you, the reader, that these problems are caused by poverty and in turn affect it. By the end I would like you to recognize that these factors can come from poverty and take an affect on the lives of those in poverty.
Children in poverty is a typical social issue occurring in society today. “More than 16 million children in the United States – 22% of all children – live in families with incomes below the federal poverty level” (“National Center For Children In Poverty,” n.d.). The federal poverty level measures the amount of income a family takes in per year. It varies depending on the number of people in a family. For a nuclear family (two parents and two children) the federal poverty level is around twenty-four thousand dollars in a year (“Health Care.gov,” n.d.). The average American makes around forty-six thousand dollars a year. The parents of the children in poverty make at least twenty-two thousand dollars below the average. Their families are extremely poor. Also, not just one child is facing this hardship, sixteen million children are part of families below the federal poverty line, just in America. “About 22% of children in the U.S. lived below the poverty line in 2013, compared with 18% in 2008” (Calfas, 2015). Unfortunately, the rate of poverty affecting children has gone up through the years. More and more children will face poverty during day to day life. Thousands of individuals are living in poverty. Why is it that this worldwide dilemma is still rising in rapid numbers till this day? Is it because of a lack of authoritative power, or a lack of one’s self control to do good? Despite the unknown cause, it has managed to drastically affect the lives of many. Poverty is like a curse, one that is wrongfully placed, difficult to get out of, and resistant to many forms of help.

Poverty is a social problem that affects everyone on an economic, political and social level. The problem of human suffering is one that we must combat strategically on many levels. According to the United Nations, “in 2015 more than one billion people around the world live in a state of poverty, lacking the basic goods food, clothing, and shelter that humans need to survive” (“Poverty”). There are a great number of areas that keep individuals poor, such as lack of resources, inadequate income, lack of education, language barriers and the high cost of child care. Being able to work and provide basic necessities is our basic human right and we should not be deprived of these basic human rights that individuals need in order to live satisfying lives. The government has the responsibility of helping individuals in need with the economic assistance to feed, clothe, house, educate, provide health care and decent wages for every individual. They should ensure that individuals have access to resources that will help them build a better future. There are several ways that we can work together to strategically find solutions to end inequality among the poor individuals in our society.
The definition and viewing of poverty is a topic that many find highly debatable and close to the heart.
