Kids Should Play a Sport

From 2008 to 2015, the amount of 13 to 17 year olds that play sports, organized or unorganized, fell from 42.7% to 39.3%, according to an annual survey by the Sports & Fitness Industry Association (2015). Normal physical activity benefits health, and it also helps kids develop and improve their cognitive skills. Technology is keeping kids off the field. Parents are also worried about injuries, however, most injuries are preventable. Playing sports is good for the health of kids, it keeps them off technology, and most injuries are avoidable. Physical activity is necessary in keeping kids healthy. It can help kids build and keep healthy muscles, bones, and joints, and lose weight. High blood pressure can be prevented …show more content…

However, according to the CDC (2017), over half of sports injuries are preventable. All sports can produce an overuse injury, they are the most common sports injury in middle and high schoolers, but most of these are due to parents and coaches pushing the kids too hard. As long as parents keep youth sports fun, and not too competitive, injuries can easily be prevented. In conclusion, it is healthy for kids to play sports, it gets them off technology, and the majority of injuries are preventable. Young teenagers that play sports are eight times more likely to be active at age 24 than young teenagers who don’t play sports (Perkins, 2004). All in all, kids that play sports have many benefits that kids that don’t play sports will never have.
