Should School Days Start Later? I think that school days should start later because it improves students’ grades, reduces the risk of vehicular accidents, and enhances the health and safety of students. For example, “ Later start times can mean less missed school - absences dropped 15% in Bonneville County Idaho, after it institutes such a change, according to a 2014 Children’s National Medical Center. “ (Lewis, 3) This states that more students showed up to school than they did before there was a time change. “A Colby College Economist, Finley Edwards, found that a one hour delay in start time increased math tests and reading scores by 3 percentile points.” (Lewis, 4) Students’ academic testing scores have improved just by starting school 1 hour later. Many schools have tried to improve their school’s overall academic performance in many ways, but none of them have worked as well. School districts could easily improve percentages by detaining school for one hour. In addition, “ Teny M. Shapiro an economist at Santa Clara University, estimates that one hour change produces the same benefit as shrinking the class size by ⅕ or replacing a teacher in the 50th percentile of effectiveness with one in the 84th percentile.” (Lewis, 5) The student’s learn more effectively and school’s wouldn’t have to replace teachers or institute new teaching styles. Starting school later can improve how students perform, and districts wouldn’t even have to change anything, besides the time
