They cause damage to your body, blackening your lungs. They will kill you and yet, you still reach out for another cigarette, putting yourself one step closer to death. What about the people around you? Your family, friends and those who cared for you. You smoke not only at the expense of your own health but you smoke at a cost to others. Financially you’re spending more money on cigarettes than a holiday to relax and have fun. Smoking has become a threat to many lives and it is time for a change.
We all know that smoking is bad, we know that it harms our body, what we don't know is why it is still available in the market despite all the controversies? According to Quitnow Australia, one person in Australia dies from tobacco-related

Scientific evidence has shown that passive smoke contains finer and more concentrated toxics that are inhaled into the lungs and remain longer in the body of passive smoker than in the smoker. You may become the next victim if smoking continues. According to Quit Australia, children in particular are susceptible to the effects of second-hand smoke because they are growing and developing. Long term exposure can lead to the risk of sudden infant death syndrome, asthma, middle ear infection as well as various heart and lung diseases. As a teenager living in a country with many people diagnosed with asthma is devastating, especially innocent young children. They are not able to overcome an asthma attack without having to experience the greatest pain like a fish out of water who attempts to grasp as much oxygen as possible to survive. Wouldn't it be great to see future Australians living in a country free from the hands of passive smokes? Smoking has not only become the killer of health, but also the killer of finance.
Everyone knows that money is hard to earn. But do people know that cigarette and financial issues are inevitably linked? Studies in Australia show that spending money on tobacco products represent more than 10% of total household expenditure of families. According to Life Insurance Australia, the average a-pack-a-day smoker spends
Tobacco has and still is the most important public health issue faced in Australia and internationally. (Jochelson, 2006). Many countries such as North America, England, Australia, Canada and Ireland have introduced policies regarding smoking in public areas and restriction of smoking in indoor areas. (Thomson, Wilson & Edwards, 2009). The government, community leaders and policy makers work towards introducing policies that will stop consumers from smoking in public areas. (Pizacani, maher, Rohde, Drach & Stark, 2012). Government intervention should extend public smoking bans so that second hand smokers can be safe, a better environment and less death incidents relating to smoking.
According to “The Action of Smoking and Health,” every six seconds someone loses their life as a result of a tobacco related disease. It’s hard to realize how damaging cigarette smoking’s effect can be until you experience it first hand. It is almost certain that every one knows someone who is currently a smoker or was a smoker at some point in their life. For years smoking was the seen as the “cool” thing to do, it was how to “fit in.” There was no real emphasis placed on the dangers of this particular habit, and as a result, it became a world wide trend. In the past, technology and medicine were not nearly advanced enough to be able to determine just how harmful tobacco usage is. However, as we have made medical and
It can stain your teeth and gums, resulting in yellow teeth and bad breath which can affect your social life. It can cause sexual problems for men by reducing the amount of sperm they can produce. It has also been proven that 'smoking causes aging of skin' (Buzzle 36), because the skin is deprived of blood. Pregnant women should not even try to smoke cigarettes during their 9 months because of the harm it could do to the baby and themselves. The affects of smoking on women and the child during pregnancy are as follows: high possibility of miscarriage, pregnancy complications and possible death of the baby. These are just a small variety of facts on smoking and how dangerous it can be, yet millions of people across the U.S choose to smoke anyways, without realizing the harm it can doing to their bodies. For secondhand smokers, the same principle applies. Don’t smoke and you will live a healthy lifestyle. I have personally seen many of my friends who hang around with their other friends that happen to smoke. When I confront them about the harm it is doing to them, they tend to ignore the advice I offer, so I let them be, hoping that one day they will realize that smoking harms more people than just the smoker themselves. It causes harm to the people around them and to the environment, increasing the pollution in our world. Former U.S vice-president Al Gore, believes that smoking is
The World Health Organization, Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and every medical board and association agrees that cigarettes are extremely detrimental, yet people keep smoking them. Cigarettes by nature and design are highly addictive and very hard to quit once you have started a habit of smoking them. Surveys have found that smokers themselves don’t even like smoking cigarettes they
Smoking is recognised as the largest single preventable cause of death and disease in Australia. It is associated with an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, emphysema, bronchitis, asthma, renal disease and eye disease. Tobacco contains the powerfully addictive stimulant nicotine, which can make smoking a regular and long-term habit that is not easy to quit (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2014). Statistics show
Is smoking a cigarette like aiming a smoking gun to your head? Absolutely, yes! The photo above, has a very powerful message to be shared with people all over the world. The creator of the picture above is, The American Cancer Society. This is an organization that is trying to heighten awareness of the dangers of smoking, the most threatening danger being, cancer. They also promote relays which help raise money for ads and research. The money raised helps to inform people of the dangers smoking and what the negative outcomes of such a habit. This society also helps with finding treatment options. They are helping people cope with the side effects of various cancers or to advise on health insurance. A certain population of people, particularly young people, see smoking as a cool or hip idea to fit in. The goal of this visual argument is to inform people who smoke cigarettes that they should just hold a gun to their heads. The American people should be against nonsmoking because of the feelings you get when smoking, the chemicals that are involved, and how the cigarette will kill like a loaded gun.
“Smoking rates have halved in Australians over the past 30 years, falling below 16%. Except for in Indigenous populations, smoking rates have remained at more than twice this level, with even higher rates reported in remote communities” (RACGP, 2013) The inequality that has been faced by Indigenous people is still at an unacceptable level, and has “been identified as a human rights concern by the United Nations” (Dick, 2007). Smoking is a major issue because, “it is the most preventable contributor to the gap in life expectancy between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples” (Ivers, 2011). “Smoking contributes to 17% of the life expectancy gap” (Australian Government: Department for Health and Welfare, 2011). The socio-economic disadvantage faced by Indigenous people leads to the addiction of tobacco, which can be caused by many factors including; their position on the social gradient, education, social exclusion, their employment status and their social support. There is a lack of developed personal skills on the health risks of tobacco, “some Aboriginals don’t identify smoking as a health issue” (Korff, 2014), due to the history of Aboriginal people around smoking. As well as first hand smoke, passive smoking also contributes to poor health, especially for children. Smoking is the major cause for heart disease, stroke, some cancers, lung diseases and a variety of other conditions (HealthInfoNet.ecu.edu.au, 2013). “If we could reduce tobacco consumption levels
Smoking tobacco is probably one of the worst habits humankind has developed. Originating as a tradition of the Native Americans, practiced mostly on special occasions, smoking has gradually become a kind of mass addiction. Due to the efforts of tobacco companies seeking to increase their sales, people started smoking more and more often; the evolution of a more traditional pipe to a cigarette took some time, but eventually tobacco became more affordable and easier to use (you now simply need to light it up, instead of having to always carry a tobacco pouch, stuff a pipe, puff it, and so on). As a result, deaths and health issues connected to tobacco consumption became a worldwide
Unfortunately, it seems that people not only risk their life with every cigarette they smoke, but also affect everybody else who is around. Everybody can be affected by second-hand smoke.
"Want to go see a movie?" "Oh sorry, I can't afford to." *Lights up cigaratte* Why couldn't you go see a movie? That's right; you spent the last of your money buying tobacco products! It is hard enough for people in today's society to get their priorities straight as is. It is not easy for those craving the addiction of tobacco to pay for something they need, rather than they want. Some people spend over two hundred and fifty dollars a month and then there is those that pay in dimes and nickels at the gas station, scraping away to get a good puff in. Tobacco can cause loss of money and priorities.
Smoking kills. Smoking can cause cancer and other bad diseases. Also, companies have made cigarettes in different flavors which are worse than regular cigarettes. People who smoke can be addicted. If you try to stop smoking cold turkey, it will give you headaches and stomachaches. I wanted to research this topic because I have some really close friends and they have family that smoke. Their great-grandpa died from smoking. Also, I noticed a lot of people are dying because they made the bad decision to smoke. Some people started to smoke when they were teenagers. They got addicted to it, and now they can’t stop smoking. I wanted to try to find a way people who smoke can stop. How can countries solve and stop smoking? This problem can be solved and it will be solved because countries are starting to ban smoking from certain places.
Recorded in Australia during 2011-12, 8 million Australian adults had smoked a cigarette in their life, out of that 8 million; 3.1 million were already current smokers. Currently there are laws against smoking in the workplace, but there are no laws about having restricted areas for smoking outside of the workplace. In 2011-12, there was a recorded estimate of 22.7 million residents. 19.6 million of those people do not smoke, so why are we not making Australia a safer and smoke free environment for those people.
Smoking cigarettes are detrimental to everybody. Firstly, the effects on the user. Tobacco smoke contains at least 70 chemicals known to cause cancer (Cancer.org, 2017). The biggest risk that arises from smoking is lung cancer. It is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Canada. In 2017 21,100 Canadians will die from lung cancer, 26% of all cancer deaths (Cancer.ca, 2017). Secondly, the smoking not only affects the perpetrator, but also the people around them. The second hand smoke increase the risk for near people to get lung cancer and heart problems. Children are at a bigger risk because their respiratory and immune systems are still developing (Canada.ca,2016). Finally, it affects the environment. The smoke from the cigarettes contain carbon and methane, two chemicals that pollute the atmosphere. Smoking worldwide releases 2.6 billion Kg of CO2 and 5.2 billion Kg of methane. Also, cigarettes buds are one of the
If somebody is smoking they can get many different types of diseases and cancers. It is proven that somebody who smokes is 15 to 30 percent more likely to get lung cancer. That is a crazy amount more than a person not smoking. Tobacco itself also has around 7,000 chemicals. That many chemicals are not very good for your body. Around 70 are known to cause cancer in humans and animals (CDC). Ammonia(used to treat waste water), Arsenic(rat poison), Acetone(nail polish remover), Cadmium(batteries), Nickel (Smoker News World) are only a few of the dangerous chemicals in tobacco. If that does not scare you away from smoking I don't know what will. All of those chemicals listed are extremely poisonous. In our culture it is unethical to have somebody kill themselves. But this is still happening right under our noses, literally. Thousands of people die because of smoking. So why don't why just ban smoking and stop these people from killing
In Australia, tobacco is the largest single preventable cause of diseases and death (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2013). According to the National drug strategy household survey 2013, the prevalence of daily smoking in Australian population over 14
