The time that high school should start has been a topic of debate ever since the modern era, when the average amount of sleep teenagers should be getting was discovered. This debate has only increased in recent years, prompting some high schools to take action and push the starting time back. But just some high schools making this change is not enough. All high schools need to realize that as students get into more advanced classes and the competition for college gets tougher and tougher, students a beginning to fall behind because of lack of sleep and focus. High school needs to start later because it is better for the student’s health and it will result in a healthier lifestyle for both the students and the school. First, high schools should start later because of health concerns. With students taking harder classes, the need to study and have sufficient time for homework is much greater than middle and elementary school. With early start times, students are forced to stay up late to finish homework because of how late they arrive at home after school ends. Teenagers should be getting between 8-10 hours of sleep, and due to these very early start times, that is something that cannot happen. Along with this amount of sleep comes another reason for later high school starting times, circadian rhythms. Circadian rhythms play a major role in the development of teenagers, as during this period of their life, their body becomes tired much later than it was when they were younger. Back when students were in elementary and middle school, they had not begun puberty, so these circadian rhythms were driving sleep to happen much earlier in the night. Now, the desire to sleep does not become its highest until around 11:00. Going off of this, it would be impossible for students to get the recommended amount of sleep with the current way school times are. So, change is needed to provide students with the sufficient amount of the sleep they need. Overall, lack of sleep and circadian rhythms are the main health concerns for high schoolers, which is why the high school starting time should be later. The other point as to why high schools should start later is because of the benefits it will yield to both the
In “High Schools Starting Later to Help Sleepy Teens” by Michelle Trudeau and “High Schools Will Keep Starting Too Early. Here’s why.” by Dan Weissman they both have their own perspectives on life about school starting times and the problems they may bring to the students of high schools. In Michelle Trudeau’s story she says that the starting times for high schools has many students still very drowsy and tired most of the time having them nod off during school instruction. She states that in an average high school 20% of students fall asleep in class on a typical day. Therefore, in need to prevent this from happening teens need more sleep as opposed to them not getting enough sleep from either staying up late or period as some experts say. There are many ways to add additional support for teens and their sleep.
School could be a pain, especially forcing yourself to wake up early in the morning just to go to school. We could at least wake up more later than early in the morning if we are going to school. Imagine if you could go to school later than usually. This plan actually help students. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is urging education policymakers to start middle- and high-school classes later in the morning. The idea is to improve the odds of adolescents getting sufficient sleep so they can thrive both physically and academically. The school day should start more later because student needs enough sleep, students could get excessive sleepiness in adolescents and
Research has shown that teenagers experience a change in the internal sleep clock so that waking up early and going to sleep early are difficult. Some people believe that high school classes should begin later in the day to better accommodate students’ natural sleep clocks. Waking up early can be a real struggle for teenagers. Most teens naturally sleep in until ten thirty or eleven on weekends. I do believe high school classes should start later because teens could sleep more naturally, it would give teenagers more time to do things in the mornings, and more sleep equals better
Some people believe that school times should stay the way they are, with high school students starting earlier than elementary school students. Even with such fascinating evidence
High Schools should begin later in the day to accommodate for students to get the natural sleep they really need.
One reason later start times should be introduced to more schools is the health benefits it can cause students around the world. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Centers for Disease control recommend that middle and high schools start
The article “Later start time for teens improves grades, mood, and safety” addresses the topic for teens to have later start times. “The evidence shows that the later the start time, the greater the academic benefits” (Wahlstrom 2016, pg 2). The author has strong arguments concluding the medical research, schools actually participating in later start times, academic outcomes, and health/activity outcome. School starting times being later could be more effective for students in their health and scholastic purposes.
Among the practices of the best high school in America is starting later at 9:15. If the best High school starts later than why aren’t other high schools following in their footsteps. The idea that high school should start later is suggested by the public health experts. The public health experts say that teens brains are wired to wake up later in the day. But high schools are still starting early and because of that teens are prone to misbehave, be late to class, and not do well with their grades. In Lisa L. Lewis article, “The Best High School Starts At 9:15 Why aren’t more schools following its lead believes that other high schools should follow the high school in Dallas so they can succeed as well.
I believe schools should move to a later start time. Starting later will be beneficial to teens. Starting time later will benefit teens because as they are growing and getting older they are requiring more sleep. First, teens require more sleep. For instance, teens require about 9.5 hours of sleep after puberty but only get 7.5 hours.
Finally, having school start later helps promote the safety of the kids. When school starts early, teens usually don’t get enough sleep.
One of the reasons that school should be started later is because it does not give growing teens enough time to sleep. Sleep researcher, Wendy Troxel, who spoke on TED, says that high school aged kids’ sleep cycles do no start until 11 p.m and do not end until 8 a.m. This means that whenever students’ alarms go off from anywhere around 5-7:30 a.m, it simply does not

"High school – the prime time of every kid's life, a dream come true, memories you'll never forget – "… I don't think so. Let's break it down from my view: Lindsay Callihan, a real 16-year-old kid living the real junior year, high school life. The ultimate goal of high school: build you up, break you down, and then build you up while simultaneously breaking you down again. So far, high school can be broken down into three different categories: the good, the bad, and the evil.
