Have you ever wondered why the privilege of going out and getting our own food during lunch was taken away? If yes, then you’re in for an entertaining essay on the topic. If no, then you are sad and don’t need to waste your time reading this lengthy paper. Jokes aside, I believe that students deserve the right to go out and about to get food during lunches. This essay will focus on why fast food options are no longer accessible. Three years ago during my freshman year of high school, I remembered that the upperclassmen were allowed to leave the building and would come back with food. There was no limits on what the upperclassmen could bring back as some of them would bring extras for us lower classmen. I was even part of a large pizza party at one point and that was the best lunch I’ve ever had at school. I truly miss those days when the school had far fewer restrictions than it does now, which actually sparks some nostalgia in me and that takes some effort to do. Hopefully this is showing that I do disagree with the current lunch restrictions. Now to get down to the reasonings behind my opinions. First off, yes, I do think if the free roam lunches return, that they should have a set amount of restrictions. Something like a log to note where you left to would be a necessity. Also perhaps it could be treated like sports where you would have to have good grades to be rewarded as equally. Those two points should be enough to separate the behaved students from the wrong doers.
Have you every felt left out that you couldn't go off campus lunch like other schools do? Is one of the reasons you can't go off campus because of your grade? Did you ever feel like you never had the chance to off campus. Students should be allowed to go off campus. Student should be allowed to go off campus to build confidence and bring their self esteem level come up. Student would learn responsibility with time management with not just lunch but school work. Lastly, students would have a more majority of food.
School lunch rooms have been evolving over the last decade. Healthier food choices and better-quality food are just two of many improvements happening inside school cafeterias. Although school lunch rooms are making various positive changes, there are still negative consequences for some students. Most students can go through the lunch line and not have to worry about the cost of the meal and whether they have enough money to buy a hot lunch. On the other hand, some students are constantly worrying about not being able to eat lunch due to the price. According to a CNN article titled “School Lunch Shaming” by Heather Long, “…an alarming number of American youngsters still can’t afford a $2.35 lunch, despite the dramatic expansion of free and reduced lunch programs” (paragraph 1), which demonstrates the struggles that these low-income families face when it comes to buying their student school lunches. Staff working in cafeterias have started to “shame” those students by taking away the student’s food and giving them a bag containing a cheese sandwich and milk. States such as New Mexico are taking a stand against school lunch shaming and have banned lunch shaming completely. Long also explained that, “The USDA is urging districts to stop “embarrassing” and “singling out” students who don’t have enough money for lunch” (paragraph 9), which further demonstrates the lengths people are going to solve the lunch shaming issues. Privilege and class stratification
One of the articles students would read is “No Lunch Left Behind” by Waters and Heron. The article talks about cheap foods, school cafeterias and food that is thrown away. Public safety’s has been redesigned in every school to help kids eat healthier. “Launched in 1946 as a public safety, it has turned out to be a poor investment. It should be redesigned to make our children look healthier” (Waters and Heron). As what the article says many school cafeterias aren’t really “cafeterias”. They usually heat up frozen foods or left overs. I thought our school cafeteria was like that too but, after the field trip to the cafeteria, I saw that the food they make is freshly made, and the pizza is hand made, not frozen and just heated up. This was a good experience; I now eat food from the cafeteria! Thanks to Susan Stewart. The article “No Lunch Left Behind” is very interesting article to read, like the facts of food being thrown
During an open campus lunch break student can either go home to get food, go to a restaurant or a fast food place. Open campus lunch is a good idea for students in high school in grades 10 through 12 and the occasionally students in 9th grade because, it would save schools money by not having to make much food, kids could have better food, it gives the students some free time, and it gives them a chance to have more responsibility and independence. It would also give students a little bit of freedom and a break from their classes. It is a privilege to be able to go off campus for lunch. If students are not back in class after the given amount of time or in their next class, punish them. School lunches
In today’s society, the topic of American school lunches never ceases to put a grimace on one’s face. Cringing with disgust, students, who buy their lunch, despise the unappealing meat that is offered and are wishing for menu adjustments. They also have habits with eating and drinking unhealthy. Even worse, students, who are hungry after hours of class time, are not given the amount of time needed to consume their entire meal. The direction of this essay is to explain that American school lunches contain flaws that include short lunch hours, unpalatable quality of food, and complete ban of junk food.
In numerous incidences around the country schools have reportedly denied their students school lunches because their lunch accounts are overdrawn in some cases by only a couple dollars (Green). Also, traditional packed lunches are under fire, in part, because some administrators who feel that the lunches are not nutritious enough for students have banned them (Eng, Hood). Because some school children are going hungry and have no other means of obtaining a meal during the school day, the school lunch program needs to take additional measures to ensure that the needs of all US students are being met.
The National School Lunch Program helps schools provide students who can not always afford their lunches, with healthy well balanced meals. The way it works is the school follows the requirements that the NSLP lays out and then the government reimburses the schools for the lunches of the students who qualify for the program. This program is very beneficial for everyone involved, there is only one problem. In recent years the requirements for lunches have become more strict and harder for the schools to follow. Students
Not only do both of the reasons above prove and show great examples of why or why not schools really should or shouldn't let school cafeterias be transformed into fast food courts supplied by fast food companies, in the end it's the school's themselves who make the choices to change the foods that they supply. Therefore here are three examples at which they can use to see if there school is even ready to make the leap toward fast food companies supplying lunches. First the school will need to be sure students can afford the lunches, second make sure the school can afford it as well, and thirdly the schools will need to have make sure the students are willing to go along with it. Although there is several more steps in which changing to a fast
Many people would agree that the rule on our school covering off-campus lunch should be changed. There are many problems caused by not allowing off-campus lunch. I believe that allowing off-campus lunch would benefit schools greatly.
Off campus lunch provides many advantages for students. It would allow students to eat what and where they want, rather than being served the same things over and over again each week. Off campus lunch would be beneficial to students who don’t eat school lunches, and don’t have time to pack lunches from home. This would also teach students how to gain their teacher’s trust and how to be responsible by coming back to school after they eat. Also, at Princeville, many students complain about be stuck in the loud, crammed cafeteria for so long. Being able to leave would be much more peaceful and students would love it. Handling this responsibility would be an important part of the student's high school experience, and isn't accomplished by locking students inside the cafeteria. Some might argue that students could abuse this and not return to school after lunch, and that the parking lot would be chaotic during this time. To stop this, Princeville could develop a policy where students have to apply for an “off campus lunch pass”. There could be requirements for this pass including acceptable conduct, being a junior or senior with appropriate credits, decent academic standing, and having parents sign a form giving their child permission to leave school for lunch and agree that the school is not responsible for any injuries that occur at this time. The pass would be $10, and it would be the same amount to replace a lost or stolen one. To stop a chaotic parking lot, we could extend the amount of time students get for lunch by 15 to 20 minutes. Off campus lunch would offer students a lot more freedom and
Kids don’t like school lunch. It tastes bad and we don’t get the “at home feel” when we eat it. Kids should be allowed to leave school as long as they are back on time. School lunches are proven to be unhealthy. Students aren’t as active if they eat school lunch.
Did you know that in the 1990s, many school struck deals with fast food companies, including McDonald’s and Taco Bell, allowing them to sell their products in the cafeterias? In the article “Cafeteria Wars,” written by Rebecca Zissou, there are 2 perspectives on whether or not school lunches should be healthy.
If off campus lunch is allowed, it is very possible that such freedom will make it all to easy for students to skip there afternoon classes, if they do decide to come back to school they may get stuck in traffic, city bus delays or cars breaking down could prevent then from getting back to school. They could make bad decisions like they could be drinking alcohol and they could be doing drugs some teachers think that teenagers are irresponsible, reckless and not mature enough to handle that kind of freedom; therefore, they become a liability to the
Leaving Campus for Lunch would be beneficial to Privileged High School Students because Students get a chance to take a break from a stressful day or the everyday mayhem of high school. Leaving campus for lunch can also reduce the amount of skipping students do and also give students something to look forward to during the day. Leaving campus for lunch should be a privilege to student who meet the requirements, students may work harder to excel in classes and attendance to attain this privilege
Approval for being off campus for lunch would give students the opportunity for food they actually enjoy. Just consider the irritating moment of the bell for lunch ringing and you see the same menu all over again! It gets continuous and your stomach gets sad of consuming the same food. If your brain is telling you that you’re
