You’ve probably heard that the American Heart Association has declared sitting as the new smoking. Chances are, your first thought when you heard this was something like “whatever…just one more thing that’s bad for me”. But, If sitting is the new smoking, then I could be in trouble and I bet most of you could be too.
Many of us have jobs where we sit all day. The only moving around we do is to walk to the bathroom, walk to our car, or walk to someone’s office. And when we get to those destinations, what do we do? We usually sit. For me, I sit in sessions with my clients, I sit at my desk, I sit with my interns, and I sit when I’m on the phone. Usually, I move around more at home when I’m feeding my dogs, fixing my dinner, or doing

If your building is a high-rise, take the elevator for a few floors then take the stairs the rest of the way.
If it’s been a while since you’ve exercised, don’t go all in with this right away. In other words, if you 're supposed to be at your desk at 8:00, don’t run into the building at 7:58 and expect to quickly climb several flights of stairs. Allow time to stop on the landings to catch your breath, drink some water, and wipe the sweat. Eventually you’ll climb those stairs like a champ, but it could be a bit of a challenge in the beginning.
4. When you travel, don’t just sit there waiting for your flight. Walk around!
I know waiting can be long and boring, especially if your flight is delayed, but walking around can help. Bookstores, shops, and restaurants line the terminals of the Austin airport, and most major airports in this country. You can wander around without getting too far from your gate. If perusing airport shops isn’t your thing, at least set an alarm on your phone to get up and walk around every hour. 5. Stay at hotels with fitness centers or swimming pools…and use them.
For some this can be hard because once you get to your room at the end of the day, leaving to go to the fitness center is harder than pulling teeth. An alternative is to take a jump rope or resistance band with you and do some light exercise in your room. Don’t have these? No problem! Jumping jacks and stretching can do wonders for you. Of course, there are exercise DVDs to
Transition: Now, I would like to ask the same simple question again. What would you do, take the stairs or ride the elevator?
Susan Scutti in the article “Yes, Sitting Too Long Can Kill You, Even If You Exercise” claims that sitting can reduce one’s lifespan. Scutti supports her claim by presenting a data that shows that people who spend more time on a chair, died much earlier than people who were more active. The author’s purpose is to raise awareness that sedentary behavior has a negative impact on health. The author writes in an formal tone for the general
While climbing up and down the stairs (especially public stair ways), I don’t usually hold the stair rails.
Along with the benefits listed above, nicotine is a substance that can be harmful when
The World Health Organization (2018) estimates that 1 in 4 adults are putting themselves at risk of heart disease, cancer, dementia, depression and premature death. Tremblay et al. (2017) defines sedentary behaviour as activities with a very low energy expenditure such as sitting, sleeping and watching TV.
Fear, a Double-edged Sword Whether as a small child or as an adult, most people have experienced the heart retching terror of walking up their stairs on a dark and quiet night. It will usually begin as a nervous, fast-paced, walk which will then form into an awkward run. Running is obviously the quickest way to escape the much dreaded, ankle-grabbing monster that lives in the basements of most unlucky humans. As mankind it is natural that one would run from something they dread.
As were climbing up the latter’s, you glance underneath, you start getting frightened a little. You really want to climb down but you know there’s tons of people climbing as well as you. You don’t want to make them mad or even bother them, As you’re getting higher and higher, you get more fear and feels like you have knots in your stomach. Ugh what do I do I’m about to the top.
It’s not like I live a sedentary lifestyle, but I surely am lazy. I do exercise but whenever I see a couch or a chair, I’d take that opportunity to sit on it. That feeling of relaxation, I feel like melting, and the urge to not get up when I’m on my good spot.
Sitting Disease, “what is it?” you may ask, well it is when you sit for a little too long and get no movement with your full body. As in the article from www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/do-you-have-sitting-disease it states, “What is more, do you depend on email, cell phone apps, direct-deposit paychecks, and online shopping to accomplish tasks that 10 or 20 years ago would have required you to get up and run errands? If so, then you may have “sitting disease,” a catchy phrase for a sedentary lifestyle that might be putting your health at risk.” So, there is what sitting disease is, but sitting causes it, as you can tell by the name, and just by getting up and walking to get a water
When tiredness and/or laziness hits we all enjoy sitting back. The modern life was built to keep us sitting down. For example, office work, watching television, driving and school. However, what happens when your whole day consist of you sitting down? In Diabetes: Yet another reason to get out of that chair, by Jen Christensen, CNN describes all the reason you should be more active throughout the day.
Hi everyone. According to therealcost.com, smoking kills more than 480,000 people a year. That is equivalent to the population of New Orleans. That also means that smoking causes one in five deaths. In my 18 years, I have known a few life-long smokers so I have seen the negative effects first hand. Today I will be discussing why you should stop smoking cigarettes. First, I will explain the many health risks, then I will talk about how it alters your appearance, and finally I will explain how it affects those around you.

It is estimated that 36.5 million adults smoke in the United States of America (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention B). A cigarette contains 7,000 chemicals and 70 of those can cause cancer (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention B). When someone decides to smoke a cigarette, they are not only choosing to allow those toxins into their body but are imposing all those same toxins on anyone around them. Secondhand smoke is the combination of smoke from the burning end of a cigarette and the smoke breathed out by smokers and is considered more dangerous then smoking the cigarette (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention B). Every year 480,000 people in the United States of America die because of cigarette smoking, which is the leading cause of preventable disease and death. Why has this deadly habit become such a casual part of the American life? This habit is not only harmful to the person smoking, but is hurting everyone around them. It may be their decision to smoke and cause damage to their own bodies but when they decide to smoke in public they are infringing on the rights of everyone around them right to protect their health. Smoking should be made illegal because it is not only harmful to the smokers but also causes harm to fetuses in utero, developing children and any other adults who may breathe that smoke in.
A. Have you ever gotten in trouble for doing something that you had no part in? Did you feel irritated when you had to suffer through the consequences? If so, then you are feeling the mutual hatred just like non smokers. Individuals who do not smoke are suffering from the actions of the people around them.
