Growing up in the United States, racism is an issue one cannot help but hear about at one point or another. Racial inequality and discrimination is a topic that comes up every February with Black History Month, and is often talked about in high school history classes around the country. But that is what it is considered to the majority of people: history. Most students are taught that, while there are still and will always be individual cases of racial discrimination and racism, nationally the problem ended with the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Literature is not only important to society, but is very important for each individual to read and understand. Literature can provide a way for people to learn more about what happened in the past and can even be a way for people to reduce stress in their lives. There are many different types of literature and each of them can be used for different reasons. You can use books to study specific topics, to relive the past, and to express yourself through writing. Literature can be written about the past, the future and even about present day society. Even if the book or novel is fiction, it still has some sort of theme that resembles a real world experience or problem. We need literature in our lives to help us develop and improve, not only as individuals, but as a society and to learn about the past.

To begin, Alexie shows his negative feeling towards Facebook throughout the entire poem. Often times books give people different perspectives on their lives. People with high stress levels often find comfort in reading books to take their mind off of their concerns. Sometimes, people just need to take a step back from their lives and relax for a while; therefore, reading is a great tool. In fact, all kinds of books have also helped me become a better writer. There are many different books that have impacted me over the years.

Racism has been an ongoing problem for decades, but now it has evolved into more complications rather than black people versus white people and wanting equality.

Racism has been a huge social issue for as long as I can remember. Not only does racism exists between whites and African Americans it exists between all different races all over the world. Although racism has changed a lot it still exists in many places all over the world. You would think that after so many years that people would learn that everyone is equal but some races still seem to think that they are superior to other races.

Literature is such a beautiful thing because it does not give us an answer to it's questions. There are so many iffy spots that leave us to develop our own thoughts and feelings toward the piece of work. This is an interesting factor because at many times it affects us in a different way and can develop us as an individual. When reading a piece of literature, one person can interpret it in different ways than another person reading the same piece of work. I remember analyzing poems with my English class in the previous years and when we were asked to interpret it, we all had different answers. Racism has always been a big factor in the United States, less so in the 21st century but ever so present. This issue resulted in the longest and biggest human massacre in history, followed by decades of discrimination and horrific acts of abuse that are a reality until this day.

It seems as if every day there is something on the news dealing with racial issues. Racism has been around for centuries and it does not seem to be disappearing anytime soon. During the past few months there has been a significant rise in racist acts specifically towards African Americans. From police brutality to white nationalist rallies there have been several acts of racism committed throughout the United States.

Throughout all of time, literature has played an important role in people’s lives. Books are more than just stories to laugh at, cry with, or fall asleep to, but books can teach. Books can teach a person a simple task such as baking cookies or an extremely complex one such as solving for the derivative of a trigonometric path and its parabolic motion. Whatever the subject, whomever the reader, books can teach people many lessons. One of the most important lessons that a book can teach a reader is a lesson about himself, about the difficulties of life, and about living a good life. As time has passed, so has literature itself. Racism is still alive today but it is less influential than the fifties. African Americans no longer have to fear about being denied an education or job because they are Black. However, although the lives of African Americans have gotten better, the American society has chosen other groups to mentally and physically abuse. Men and women who are transgender are being bullied, harassed, raped and murdered because of who they identify as. Women who are transitioning have to pass as a male and men who are transitioning have to pass as women so they want fear for their lives. It is unfortunate that we live in a “free country” and people are still being forced to pass so they want have to fear for their lives. Muslims are also getting attacked because of what they believe in. Muslims are getting murdered and harassed because of who they believe in and where they are from. America has to enforce change in order for everyone to live safely together. Nobody should have to live their live in fear wondering what if. African Americans, Muslims, homosexuals, Latinos, and everyone deserve to be able to live their life in peace. Sam Cooke said, “A change is gonna come.” I hope it comes soon

Reading helps to open people's eyes and to teach life lessons or to show there are other things to believe in and know other than what they have always been told to know. Getting different types of books, types that are not always the same as the books that you normally read can help you to view things differently. For example from personal experience a new book can help your imagination grow, readings helps me a lot when I need to come up with new ideas for an art class. The new places a book takes you the new images you see while you are reading the new stores you hear and the happy ending your book might have can change the way you are feeling it can brighten up your day.
