I do not feel that Phillip Malloy’s free speech rights were violated. There are multiple reasons for this. Philip was not singing to be patriotic, but instead to annoy his teacher Ms. Narwin. He was also warned multiple times to give the national anthem “quiet respect”. Once Phillip was in the principle’s office Phillip was even given a chance to apologize to his classmates for disturbing them during the national anthem, but he refused. These three facts are why Phillip Malloy’s free speech rights weren’t violated, and he was only singing to create a disturbance. In multiple places in the book, you can tell that Phillip Malloy was singing only to create a disturbance and not to be patriotic. During the story, Phillip sang during homeroom on 3 different occasions. The first one, when asked to stop, Phillip did indeed stopped singing. If Phillip did stop after the first day, he could be excused of being patriotic because if someone was actually patriotic, and was told to be quietly respectful, they would follow those instructions. After the school finds out about what the media is saying and all of the fake news, the school authorities decide to interview some of the kids in Ms. Narwin’s class at the time. The first of all the kids to be interviewed was Ken. Ken was Philip’s friend, so he responded in such a way that defended Phillip, but he was exposed when he said he was able to hear Phillip singing, and the fact that he sits all the way across the room from him. The other person to be interviewed was Allison. Allison told the complete truth about how Phillip was doing it on purpose to annoy everyone. At the end, she even stated that she liked Ms.
