This photograph caught my attention because of how dirty their clothing is and their facial expression which seemed depressing and desperate for help. The picture is of Bud Fields (who was a sharecropper-farmer who gives a part of each crop as rent) and his family, they are seen sitting (except for the eldest kid) and are staring at the camera trying to show sympathy and show what the Great Depression has done to their lives. As you can see the background of the house looks very dirty and empty and by the look of their clothes they seem like they haven’t showered because their water probably ran out and haven’t washed their clothes. This picture was taken in 1936 or 1937 in Hale County, Alabama.
The person who took the photograph was Walker
Walker Evans photograph “Roadside Stand Near Birmingham” shows the struggle between this family and the rest of the community during the Great Depression. Two young men holding watermelons and selling fruit and vegetables. These boys are trying to make a living in the depression. These boys look tired and they are determined to sell as many fruits and vegetables as they can. The building is separated into two different businesses in one building, one was “F.M. Pointer, the old reliable, house mover” and the other is a fish and bait shop. These shops look like they are run down but they are the family’s only mean of income. This is what puts food on the table The man in white looks like he is a customer and looks better than the rest of the
Walter Evans depiction of Buds Fields and his family during the Depression of the 1930’s shows insecureness, loneliness, and abandonment. In it, a family that is desolate and powerless sits in the only room that they live in and share. Their faces are insecure with the fact they do not know if they are going to live through the Great Depression and disappointment for their young kids and baby who may not get the chance to truly live and grow up with what they should. Their postures in this photo shows that they are alienated from a happy life. Only the older adults are sitting down while the younger kids are standing up. Although, it shows respect towards the fact that the older are weaker and need to be sitting down while the kids can stand
Walker Evan’s depiction of life and the people during the Great Depression of the 1930’s is daunting, isolated, and fatigued. A reason why the picture “ South Street, New York” is daunting is because, the men look like they do not have jobs. A reason why it is isolated is because the men are separated, not talking or looking at each other. A reason that its fatigued is because the men are just sitting around, for instance, the man on the right seems to be reading a newspaper while his head is being held up with his hand, and one of them is sleeping. There seems to be a lock on the door, maybe the gentleman laying down in front of the doors work there, he could be waiting for it to open. The man on the left looks like he is exploring the magazine
Annie showed the Depression era because of the hope Annie had. I could tell it was during the depression era because of the clothes people were wearing and by how many people were out on the streets. Annie has lots of hope she had hope that her parents were going to come get her because they didn’t have enough money to care for her anymore. Grace, Mr.Warbucks assistant, came to the orphanage where she was taking Annie to Mr. Warbuck’s place for a week. Eventually Mr. Warbuck’s got used to her and Mr. Warbucks wanted to adopt her but Annie refused. Annie was very lucky because most people didn’t get the chance to live even in a house during the Great Depression. Annie refused for Mr. Warbucks to adopt her because she really had hope that
The famous photographer Walker Evans’s depiction of life and the people during the Depression of the 1930s is Devastating, Inferior, and Vulnerable. For instance, the person on the left reading the newspaper seems to be devastated, whilst the other two are sleeping. They all seem to appear that they had just got laid off by the company or the company went bankrupt and everyone lost their jobs. Since the time frame that this took place in was the 1930s, this was very common in society in that era of time. A perfect example of being infuriated is the two men on the left and right side of the picture, sitting there frustrated. The man on the left has a depressing look on his face to be sitting there not doing anything but reading a paper, while the man on the right looks completely done with everything and has a look of sorrow and remorse on his face. Suppose that the company never shut down. Then they would not be vulnerable to the cold weather and hardships they are currently going through at the moment.
Dorthea Lange’s photo “5 ½ Men” clearly exhibits the job scarcity in the time of The Great Depression. The photograph shows 5 men standing beside a large trailer full of cut down trees and the bottom half of a man standing on top of one of the trees on the trailer. The men appear to be worn out as if it is the end of a long day’s work. The five men standing beside the trailer are all holding logging tools; two of them have double sided axes and the other three have a log peavey in hand. One of the tires on the trailer isn’t even on the rim which make the trailer look like it’s in bad shape and like it won’t roll very well. All of this looks to be in the middle of a forest; perhaps on top of a mountain. This photo plainly shows
Walker Evan’s depiction of life and the people during the Depression of the 1930’s is startling, depressed and astonishing. A startling example of the picture is how the little boy is not fulling clothed which shows that it was acceptable to be dressed like that as an adolescent. It wasn’t frowned upon back in the 30’s. The people were startled by just looking at the picture. For Instance, the person wearing a long white dress seems like she is depressed looking downwards to the ground. The author was most likely trying to indict she is abandoned. It is very astonishing seeing a, which looks like a family depressed. If the people were, for example, living in our generation then they would be dressed extremely different. Suppose that they
When initially looking at the iconic black and white photo, one sees a woman and two children. After closely examining the image, one sees the third child, an infant, being held by the woman. The woman is not looking directly at the camera, but the audience is able to see her gaze. The woman’s eyebrows are furrowed causing her face to appear as worried with a look of desperation. Looking more meticulously at the woman, one will notice that she has a slight frown. The woman is able to show her stress by using her right hand to pull down slightly on her face. Aside from the woman, there are three children in the photograph. Two of the children are facing away from the camera with their heads rested on the woman’s shoulder. The third child is an infant who seems to be sleeping while this photograph was taken. The woman and children in the photo are migrants that are trying to survive the Great Depression and
The Great Depression was the longest lasting economic downturn in the history of the industrialized American culture. In the United States, the Great Depression began soon after the stock market crash of October 1929, which sent Wall Street into a frenzy and wiped out millions of stockholders. The Wall Street Crash of 1929, also known as Black Tuesday, the Great Crash, or the Stock Market Crash of 1929, began on October 24, 1929, and was the most devastating stock market crash in the history of the United States, when considering the full extent and duration of its aftermath.
The Great Depression’s Poverty Student’s Name Course Date The Great Depression’s Poverty Poverty was at its worst in the United States of America during the Great Depression. The worst levels were felt in the year 1936. The photograph taken by Dorothea Lange gives an insight on how intense the poverty was. The primary reason that led to the increased rates of poverty was unemployment.
This picture that was taken by photographer Dorothea Lange is very reminiscent of another artist that I viewed a documentary on. This is the chief reason, among many, why I picked this picture out of the thousands in our book. The documentary touched on many aspects of photography in the depression. Such as the fact that the people in these pictures are not trained actors or models, the subject of these pictures are just regular people that were suffering in the depression. The picture does not have any vibrant colors in it, which also puts emphasis on the despair of the people in the picture. Another feature of this picture that caught my attention was that that the kids in the picture were looking away or were hard to notice, while the mother’s
The 1920s were a time of great prosperity and revitalization. This decade gave way to many great social milestones for every class of people. From the limits for immigration to the boom of the auto industry American society was drastically altered. Issues such as foreign immigration, prohibition, the Ku Klux Klan ,evolution, women’s roles, and race were the focus of the populus and drove politics within the nation. Art played a major role in how the black community expressed their new found sense of culture. Painting has always been a way for someone to portrait their ideas.
Photography was first used in the United States prior to the Civil War as a way of making portraits of people. Due to the limits of the technology, each photograph was a unique image that could not be reproduced. Over time as the technology improved, photographs could be reproduced and this art form was then used as a method of communicating and sharing images of places and themes. The use of photography during the Civil War to depict (show) battles is one example. While the effect of photography on people’s perceptions of the Civil War has been well-documented, the changes in technology gave photography a more extensive influence on public opinion, institutions and the way people lived after the Civil War.
In photo 1 and 8, a mother with a dirty face is show looking into the distance while her two children rest their heads on her shoulder. The distraught look on her face is heartbreaking. This photo represents a mother who cannot provide for her children and this woman is just one of many. All over the country, parents were constantly worries about how they were going to put food on the table. These
The name "Photography" comes from the Greek words for light and writing. Sir John Herschel, was the first to use the term photography in 1839, when he managed to fix images using hyposulphite of soda. He described photography as "The application of the chemical rays to the purpose of pictorial representation". Herschel also coined the terms "negative", "positive" and "snapshot".
