An archipelago is a cluster of islands that are usually volcanic and occurs in subduction zones. Japan is in the crossroads of four different tectonic plates - the Pacific plate, the Philippine plate, the Eurasian plate and the North American, and due to the plate movement and subduction of all these plates land mass has been created. The subduction of the Pacific plate resulted in Japan being pulled away from mainland asia and created what is known as the Japan Sea. Of the 6,852 islands Japan is made up of four of them make up over 97% of Japans

The Hawaiian Hotspot, specifically, is an interesting case study in plate tectonics. As differing parts of the tectonic plate have passed over the hotspot, it has left a “chain” of islands. Where we find these islands indicates where the hotspot used to reside. While there are only eight “main islands” that we know as the state of Hawaii, these eight islands are only those which are visible. There are literally countless islands in this chain submerged underwater. In addition, distant islands such as Midway were long ago created by the Hawaiian Hotspot. All in all, the Hawaiian Hotspot is responsible for the creation of islands that span a distance of 1500 miles.

One result of the restoration was that Japan’s military grew and strengthened, leading them to be one of the most powerful navies in the world, along with the united states and right under the United Kingdom. From the restoration, Japan used a lot of their wealth for their warfare to build high end battleships and battlecruisers.
