The word cancer comes from the word Karkinos which is greek language. Physician hippocrates used this word to describe carcinoma tumors sometime between the periods 460-379 B.C. Although there were many accounts and evidence of cancer before, which were found in mummies in ancient Egypt during the period 1600 B.C. The oldest evidence of cancer was found in 1500 B.C in a tomb in egypt. Cancer treatment were non existence during those days. There were small palliative treatments which relieved pain and suffering temporarily. However we still use similar surgical treatment for surfaced tumors today that was used during that period. Early hippocrates also discovered that cancer returned after surgery. Cancer treatments has evolved tremendously
The term chemotherapy is defined as: “The treatment of disease by means of chemicals that have a specific toxic effect upon the disease-producing microorganisms that selectively destroy cancerous tissue” (Dictionary of Cultural Literacy). When chemotherapy was first developed at the beginning
From surgery to radium exposure to such extremes as radiation therapy, as doctors’ knowledge of the varying types of cancer, and the expansion of medical research regarding cancer has changed, so has the preferred method of treatment. Doctors and researchers dedicated to studying cancer have led to a greater understanding of cancer development; consequently the development of treatments and cures that are more effective, less harmful, have fewer side effects, and in some cases serve to prevent the spread of cancer.
Cancer is a term used for diseases in which irregular cells divide without any control and have the capability to penetrate and infect normal body tissue through the blood and lymph system. Cancer is the second leading cause of mortality in the United States, exceeded barely by heart disease. According to the CDC Cancer Statistics and Data, there were more than 1.45 million people diagnosed with various kind of cancer between 1999 and 2007 and out of those more than 562,000 people died due to cancer (cdc.gov, 2012). Currently there are more than 200 different types of cancer that have been discovered. Cancer could be
The passage On the Sacred Disease, is an examination into the alleged 'sacred disease' of epilepsy. Although many of the anatomic and bodily propositions were incorrect, Hippocrates concepts were closer to the diagnostics and teachings of today than those of metaphysical reasoning. For these reasons, On the Sacred Disease provided a structural understanding of diseases in our bodies today.
The Importance of Hippocrates in Medicine Hippocrates was a Greek doctor. Born in Cos around 460BC, Hippocrates was the most famous of Greek doctors. He wrote medical books which have helped improve medical information and remedies. Hippocrates created the Hippocratic Oath, where doctors promised to treat patients with respect and would always try to cure them of their problems. All of Hippocrates work has helped to forward medical knowledge.
Starting soon after the achievements of Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, in 460 BC Greek medicine and treatments began to intensely develop and improve due to anatomical research. Ancient physicians and anatomists such as Erasistratus, Herophilus, Galen, and Andreas Vesalius conducted dissections on live and dead organisms to lead them to make important discoveries about the anatomy, functionality, and overall health of humans. With passing time, each person built off of their influences work by testing validity, expanding on research, and all the meanwhile making their own discovers. However, human dissection and vivisection experiments were limited due to conflicts with ethnics and the ways of the Catholic Church. There was also the
In the past, diseases were based on religion, superstition, and belief but not on science. People used to think that disease is caused by the decision of God. Hippocrates, the father of western medicine, attempts to think about the disease and found to be caused by environmental factors like climate, pollution, lifestyle, and poor nutrition. In the middle ages, quarantine was the only method to keep away from the
Life in ancient time was not as easy as compared to modern life. People lived in the ancient were more fragile under the lack of medicine practice. Giving birth to a child could easily take away a woman’s life, a cold could kill a newborn baby, a sword wound from battle could cause a fetal infection. People was not familiar with herbs or any medical procedure, or had awarded about symptoms of diseases that was about to happen. War, and famine were two majors cause of death. People became soldier and send into battles to fight for lands to farm. Where it happened to be a place with highest chance to die. Not just one culture, it happened to almost every other cultures. People were less concerned about the cure of a known disease than they are
Today I'll be talking about How Medicine Became Better. Which brings us to our word of the day, which is medicine. Today my hook is how did Hippocrates advance the modern medicine? Three ways that Hippocrates changed the modern medicine are by doing an observation, conducting an experiment, and recording the data.
Cancer is the name given to a collection of more than 100 related diseases. It is a genetic disease caused by changes to genes that control the way our cells function (“What is Cancer?” National Cancer Institute). The genetic changes that subsidize cancer tend to affect three chief types of genes- proto-oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes, and DNA repair genes. These are the “drivers” of cancer. Cancer can appear and grow virtually anywhere in the body. Types of cancer are customarily named for the organs or tissues where they form. They can also be described by the types of cell that formed them. Although there are many different kinds of cancer, all cancers start because abnormal cells grow out of control (“What is Cancer?” American Cancer
Hippocrates was born on the island of Cos around 460 B.C. He was a famously known ancient Greek physician who was later called the father of medicine. Plato and Aristotle wrote much about him. Hippocrates wanted to prove that disease was a natural process by collecting data and also by conducting experiments. He wanted to prove that the signs and symptoms of a disease were caused by the natural reactions of the body to the disease process. He did not want people to believe that it came from the gods and spirits.
First I will tell you about his childhood, then I will tell you about his legacy, and finally I will tell you about his training education. Hippocrates was very smart because of his medical education.
Surgery is the oldest type of treatment for cancer. In its earlier use, surgery was not as successful as it is today. This was due to the difficulties involved with the anesthesias, excessive blood loss,
The word “cancer” first appeared in medical literature in 400BC during the time of Hippocrates as “karkinos”. Cancer was compared to a crab, which was denoted by its hardened back, its painful sting and its mobility. Another Greek word described cancer as “onkos” which represented the load born by cancer patients which is
Several methods such as surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy have been used to treat cancers. The cancer patients who are not helped
