After the completion of the Sistine Chapel ceiling, Michelangelo became known as “divine Michelangelo”, and he felt he was God’s artist. While at Rome, he created some of his most famous works like the “Pieta” and the “David”. After living in Rome for several years, he was hired to paint several murals in the Sistine Chapel. He was very humbled to be selected to paint in the Sistine Chapel. His original idea for the ceiling of the Chapel was to have the 12 apostles morphed into around 300 figures. He had several assistants to help him paint. When the project was almost completed, a fungus infected the plaster and the entire 65 mural had to be recreated. Michelangelo then fired all of his assistants and did the entire thing by himself. He would not let anyone around the mural while he was painting. This is where he painted the famous “Creation of Adam” on the ceiling of the Chapel. It took him 4 years to finish all of these murals and it left him partially crippled. After the Sistine Chapel, he decided that he would never paint again so he started sculpting . He was then commissioned to work on a tomb for Pope Julius II. This tomb took him several decades to complete. After completing the tomb, Michelangelo did miscellaneous work for nearby churches until he died on February 18th, 1564. He lived to be 88 which was a very long life for that era.

He took the subject out of a religious context and placed it in a humanist light emphasizing the grief of Mary and the mortality of her dead son.
The Renaissance, “rebirth,” began in the fourteenth century which spanned all the way to the sixteenth century. This great cultural transition that spread throughout Europe was one of the most important periods of European history as the ideas of the Medieval age shifted to a more modern age. Throughout this period Europe experience many major achievements in literature, architecture, philosophy, and of course art. Out of the Renaissance, Europe gained many historically important artists like Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Giovanni Bellini, Giorgione, Titian, but one particular man who would come to be known as one of the greatest artist of all time is none other than Michelangelo Buonarroti.1 Michelangelo created many masterpieces in his lifetime, but the most astounding piece of work he has done is the fresco on the ceiling of Rome’s Sistine Chapel along with the The Last Judgment on the altar wall that was commissioned by Pope Paul III. Michelangelo’s work for the paintings done in the Sistine Chapel would be one of the most influential frescos of his time with its patronage and ideas of the Renaissance.
It is thought that Michelangelo also may have painted Madonna which is called the Manchester Madonna. When the year 1505 hit, Michelangelo was then invited by the newly invited pope, Julius II back to Rome. When he arrived he was commissioned to build the tomb of the Pope, this tomb had forty statues and was planned to be finished in five years. While working on this huge tomb Michelangelo was constantly distracted by other tasks. This caused Michelangelo to go from finishing it in five years to him taking a whole forty
Born March 6, 1475, Michelangelo Buonarroti “is considered [to be] one of the most famous artists of the Italian Renaissance.” (Biography.com Editors) As a child, Michelangelo had a greater interest in artwork and its production rather than schooling, so at the age of 13 his father allowed him to become Domenico Ghirlandaio’s apprentice in Florence. During his teenage years, Michelangelo studied classic sculpture in the Florentine gardens of the Medici family, who were wealthy and allowed him access to the elite of Florence. After studying there for a few years, he eventually moved to Rome, where he would work until he died. Known for his sculptures the Pieta and David, and for his paintings on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and the Last Judgement Michelangelo had many other works. Michelangelo’s innovated artistry was believed to have achieved a whole new depth over the timespan. Like da Vinci, Michelangelo is said to have influenced Raphael, an artist who actually was his arch rival. This is an example of how Michelangelo was influential during the Renaissance. His artwork depicted scenes from the bible and were painted in the Sistine Chapel which is a major contribution to the culture and beliefs of the time.
