I started off with two dicot plants (pinto beans) and was able to observe the sprout. In both dicot seeds the root sprout first followed by the stalk. Once the plants had developed mature roots they were transferred to a pot of soil where they remained for the rest of their time. As time passed one of the pinto bean plants dried out and the other was fertilized producing a bean pod, which can be seen in the picture for week 14. This could have occurred because of the competition that plant faced for sunlight and water. The surviving dicot plant was the one that sprouted first of the two, possibly giving it a slight advantage over the other plant. Being the first to sprout allowed it to have more time to develop it roots as well as grow. The …show more content…
The cross-sections demonstrated the basic differences that distinguish a monocot plant for a dicot plant. When looking at the cross-section of the monocot stem you can see that the vascular bundles are scattered. These vascular bundles consist of only a phloem and xylem. The phloem is responsible for transporting soluble compounds (food) created by photosynthesis, to the rest of the plant, especially where they are needed. The xylem is important for the movement of water throughout the plant. Another difference that can be seen by looking at the cross-section of at stem is that the ground tissue (parenchyma) is not partitioned into pith and cortex. In the dicot stem cross-section the vascular bundles form a ring and they are made up of a phloem, xylem, and a cambium which divides the two. The ground tissue (parenchyma) for a dicot is separate into a pith (nutrient storage and distribution) and a cortex (conducting tissues). The Leaf cross-sections reveal the venation of each plant. For monocots, the veins appeared run parallel to each other, while the veins for the dicot plant had no clear pattern. The root cross-sections also displayed differences between the groups belonging to the phylum Anthophyta. The root cross-section of a monocot is formed by vascular bundles that are arrange in a ring. In the dicot root cross-section, the xylem is at the center in the form of an
The Beanes family is traced back from Christopher Banes who was an immigrant from Scotland and started his life as a merchant and planter. Dr. William Beanes is a fourth generation Scottish man born on the 24th of January 1749 to the parents of William Beanes and Mary Bradley at Brook Ridge, a thousand acre farm near Croom, Maryland on the Patuxent River. His father was the first in his family to move to Prince Georges County. Brooke Ridge was given to his great grandmother, Anne Brooke since her brother died childless in 1671. William Beanes was one of seven children in his family (Magruder 2).
“My grandparents didn’t come all the way from Germany just to see it get taken over by immigrants. Not on my watch.” (Donald Trump). The thinking of aA privileged American, one such as Donald Trump, who has the net worth of four billion dollars, wouldn’t know the challenges that immigrants experience. The Bean Trees, by Barbara Kingsolver, highlights some of the many issues immigrants face when living in America. In The Bean Trees, the character Taylor decides to makes a life changing decision to leave her hometown for good. However, she had acquired a child, whom she names Turtle, and she is suddenly faced with the hardness of a mother in a land filled with social injustices that is constantly tripping her. She is able to overcome the obstacles
The leaves of a plant are the main photosynthetic organs and are involved in gas exchange and water transportation throughout a plant (Evans et al, 17). A leaf typically consists of an upper and lower epidermis, the mesophyll cells, veins, guard cells and stomata. The mesophyll cells contains spongey cells which have large gaps between each cell to allow oxygen and carbon dioxide circulation. The mesophyll cells contain palisade cells, which are located beneath the upper epidermis. The palisade cells contain many chloroplasts, which are green organelles. Located in the internal layers of chloroplasts is the pigment chlorophyll which is involved in trapping the light energy in photosynthesis (Evans et al, 17).
The first lab was conducted to analyze how germination affects the rate of cellular respiration in lima beans compared to dormant seeds. In order to
Author use many symbolism in the book The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver. She uses symbolism because it makes it easier for readers to understand the deeper meaning or feeling of the character or the events that are happening. For example, author uses the symbolism of bean trees as transformation and Ismene as the abandoned children to show the deeper meaning of them.
differences in her character "I was liking Lou Ann a great deal these days. In
I have always been interested in science, but the hands on experiments have helped me understand and grasp concepts much easier. I recall my first experiment in first grade when the class was given the lima bean sprout experiment, which required students to plant a bean in a paper cup. The purpose of this experiment was to teach us about photosynthesis and practice our observation skills. I recall how others were fascinated about why their sprout grew. I, on the other hand, was more captivated by why the other sprouts did not grow and the factors, which contributed to that outcome. This basic experiment taught me to look at things through different lenses and not always to the most obvious path.
The gap between the average living wage for a single adult, and the federal minimum wage is almost ten dollars. The result of which is a poor quality of life for Americans working minimum wage jobs. Often times the job flipping burgers at Mc Dicks is the only job someone can get, leaving them stuck in a loop. One of the characters that appear in Barbara Kingsolver’s, “The Bean Trees”, is Sandi, a single mother working for low pay at “Burger Derby”. She finds herself struggling to keep up, using unusual ways to keep herself afloat. Many Americans are forced to find these unconventional ways to keep themselves from drowning, something children in these families can start believing is 'the norm ' of life. The minimum wage should be raised so
In the novel The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver and the autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou, both the authors write in the perspective of girls who overcome obstacles in their lives and gradually grow into strong women. Both girls eventually find their self-worth and the places to which they belong. Taylor, the main character of The Bean Trees, is a studious white girl who dreams of traveling to escape her hometown and to avoid being pregnant. The main character of the other book, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Marguerite (Maya), is a black girl with strong sense of insecurity. Although these two girls have very different experiences and live in different time periods, they tread through similar path of struggle with perseverance and
The partners of Beyond the Bean want to combine a traditional coffee shop with table/ board game rentals, where customers can socialize, in a relaxing environment. Our case analysis will demonstrate the appropriate decisions Beyond the Bean should apply to their business plan in order to achieve their goals. The report clearly identifies the problems within the case, and what choices the business should make to in order to be successful in the given area during a time of rescission. We explore the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of Beyond the Bean’s business structure, identifying vital decisions that the business should
The purpose of this lab was to investigate and observe the effects of organic vs. synthetic fertilizers on plant growth by planting lima beans with added amounts of fertilizers, and to see how does adding different nutrients to the soil affect the growth of the lima bean? A significant difference was examined between the plants that contained manure and miracle growth, unfortunately the plant with no additional fertilizers (Plant #3) did not show any growth. The plant that grew the most was the one that contained manure, to an extent the one that grew the most in a short period of time was the one that contained miracle growth, as shown in figure I. The hypothesis explaining if the Lima Bean plant contains synthetic nutrients in the soil then
Lisa Parker’s poem, “Snapping Beans,” shows us the process of the change that occurs within us, usually in young adults. In the poem, “Snapping Beans,” the speaker talks about her internal conflict while sitting with her grandma, snapping beans. The speaker has gone off to college, located on the north side of America, and notices that she is different by the way she speaks. This is due to her origins from the South. However, although she feels different, she is happy being in college.
The neighbors in The Bean Trees, were originally very rude, but after Taylor got to know them, they seemed very nice. Edna and Mrs. Poppy spent a lot of time with Mattie, Taylor, Turtle, Dwayne Ray, Lou Ann, Estevan, and Esperanza. Edna and Mrs. Poppy had been babysitting Turtle while Taylor was away. Mattie decided to take her, along with Estevan and Esperanza, to go out and smell the rain when it fell on the quenched ground. Taylor said, “I went upstairs to phone Edna and Mrs. Parsons...to say I’d be home later than usual. Edna said that was fine…” (Kingsolver 168). Taylor trusted her neighbors to look after her child and the neighbors were okay with her extending the time that they were watching Turtle. They had a friendship and a
Abruptly, the nipping jump started Palmer’s heart, and all over again, he had more feelings for Nipper. He was exuberant that he found his miracle bird, a close friend, almost a brother as he kissed Nipper on the cheeks. Palmer acted as if he were a balloon, about to burst from all the joy and blessed god that his pigeon was safe. He wanted to call Dorthy and tell her what he found, his beloved friend, as he cried in amusement, it was just not right. Palmer’s head rattled, not knowing if it was his pet or the headache engulfing his brain. A sentiment made him realize that now Dorthy was his best friend. Even though she caused this terrible accident, she was his friend, a companion now, and one better than those scrawny Beans, Motto, but
Making the onion tip root cell slide was successful. Our results supported the hypothesis because we saw cells in the onion root tip in prophase, metaphase, and anaphase. As we went up in power objectives, each phase of the cell became more definitive. The cell root was a great indicator of the structures of the different cycles of the cell. This is important because we will be prepared for future labs working with the microscopes and can now adjust it for the best view of the slide. We practiced working with the compound light microscopes and different phases of the cell cycle. Onion root tips are useful to observe mitosis because the cells are frequently diving as the root grows. So when we stained the cell, we caught many cells in different phases. The significance of this lab was to better understand the process and stages of mitosis and meiosis and compare and contrast the mitotic process in plants and animals. We grasped the concepts of what the chromosomes look like, and what they look like in each step of the processes. Having read much about mitosis and meiosis, seeing these cells was the real application of describing and understanding the stages.
