In an article by NHL.com, “Player, puck tracking coming to the World Cup”, Bettman gives a statement about the new player-tracking system. "It gives people another way to connect with the game.” “If you're a fan, you can have more and more insights to the game, and if you're a casual fan or not a fan at all, this may give you another reason to connect even more with the game."
I agree with Bettman’s statement. I believe that even the “casual” hockey fan could gain interest in the NHL with the introduction of this new tracking system. In my opinion, being able to have a great amount of individual data from each player on the ice would gain even the most casual hockey fan interest in the sport. The introduction of this new technology could ultimately help the NHL grow and reach many sport fans around the world that might not have been interested in the sport originally.

Jan states, “Quantifiable indicators of performances are steadily, often suddenly, improving; safer equipment makes new skills and techniques possible, many aspects of training and conditioning can also be done more safely, and certainly, from and economic standpoint, there is an increasingly powerful sport technology industry”. I agree with her statement. New technologies are emerging often and are helping to improve the sport industry overall. With the introduction of a player tracking system in the NHL, I believe that this will help the league continue to grow throughout the United States, and around the
That’s not for me to say. I got to a hockey player as a fan. Listen when I go to a hockey game I go to be entertained…I mean I am not a manager. I have my thoughts, but it’s not for this conversation (Coffey, 2017).
Injuries impact the school life, profession, and the approach to society of a player. It slows down the natural ability of one to obtain and accomplish their aspirations in life, such as academics achievements or relationship goals (Dr. Echlin, 2014). Physicality and toughness are important factors in sports, especially in hockey. In a sport that is nearing a century old, who dare prohibit the originality of it? But with prolific past injuries on players caused by malicious hits, such as Todd Bertuzzi’s infamous check on Steve Moore in ’04 or superstar Sidney Crosby’s year-long concussion in ’10-11, speculation has started to gather regarding the complete exertion of violence in the NHL. With over 50% of players getting injured each year and
It is also perhaps the most important part of the sport. NFL, MLB and NBA are always going to be #1, #2, and #3 in America. One of the few ways hockey players can differentiate themselves from other professional athletes is by the physicality in their game says thesportster.com. (Andrew Maggio) The physical aspect of hockey still needs to be policed. To put it another way, enforcers are a backup regulation system to the referees. It is important to realize the enforcer’s role is to prevent injuries, not cause them. Thesportster.com also states the alternative to allowing fighting in professional hockey is even more vicious than the fighting itself. (Andrew Maggio). The most vulnerable players on the ice are often the goal scorers. As a result, skilled players feel protected and can do their job of scoring goals more effectively when fighting is allowed within reason. Under these circumstances, skilled players have room to move and perform to the best of their ability because their opponents are afraid of the consequence of taking a cheap shot. “The simple reason fighting takes place in the NHL is to create space for the offence” says Darren Pang, a former NHL goaltender, when interviewed for the book: The Code. (Pang) While some may consider fighting in the NHL barbaric, one could argue it has a place on the simple statistical fact that players had less concussions and major
To start off, Hockey is a very physical sport. But fighting has been in it forever. Fighting could potentially prevent other injuries that could occur in a hockey game. Fighting in the NHL could prevent other injuries because if there is not fighting and two payers are getting mad at eachother they could hit each other harder and in ways that could hurt the other player. If there was fighting there wouldn't be these injuries and players will not get hurt. Another reason why fighting could prevent injuries is
As population continually increases in the Southern states, the NHL is moving teams into large Southern cities. In an effort to increase profits and popularity, the NHL has increased the number of teams in the league and moved into Southern cities that have never had hockey teams before. The problem is that hockey is not as popular in the South as it is in the North. This expansion in the South has lead to huge monetary losses to Southern teams and very low attendance numbers. The NHL should not have expanded the league into Southern cities and should keep NHL teams farther North.
Every sport has its own unique signature that separates it from the rest of the sports world. Baseball has the homerun, basketball has the slam-dunk, golf has the hole in one, and football has the touchdown. But, perhaps the sport with the most distinguished and unique signature is hockey and its fights. However, hockey officials and executives are trying to eliminate the games most distinctive aspect. Yet, because of the recent decline in the amount of fighting in the National Hockey League (NHL) and since a ban on fighting in the NHL could jeopardize the popularity of the sport, eliminating fighting from games may not be necessary. Over recent years, the amount of fighting in NHL games has been on the decline and the role of the one time
There are more calls for football to be banned, with many citing numerous safety issues. It is yet to be seen how the league will operate in the future. Hopefully, the NFL can do even more to protect its players in future. This investment is a step in the right direction, both for the league’s image and more importantly player
Fighting has been a part of the NHL since 1922 and it has had a huge impact on the game of hockey and the sport wouldn't be the same without it. There are a lot of injuries involved with fighting but if fighting wasn’t in pro hockey then there would probably be a lot more injuries. Some players would be more chippy and run at people and get away with it without facing the consequences for it. Fighting also has a key part in motivating a team if they aren’t playing well.
Of course the biggest reason for the idea of banning fighting in hockey is for player safety and trying to minimize potentially severe injuries. Players of the sport know what their getting into when they take the ice night in and night out. Players take on full responsibility and many believe it needs to be in hockey as it has always been
Despite the long term health outcomes, the popularity of fighting in hockey still continues to this day. Hockey is considered a collision sport, as known as contact sports, which is when professional athletes collide with each other or alternative objects such as the boards. Due to hockey being a collision sport, many injuries are sustained through colliding and fighting, especially in the head. Head trauma in hockey is the leading cause of injury in hockey. Head trauma is caused by fighting and direct hits to the head. Evidence done by McKee and colleagues shows that multiple and repeated hits to the head does indeed affect brain from it’s overall function. Furthermore, records show that enforcers in the professional league reveals that they fight a lot
For some people they have no choice but to take the chance and wish for the bright one,as many others do.Even though the sport is great and exciting, as the saying goes numbers never lie. There are more 5,000 players, who say they were actually blinded to the worst.Doing things like crumples relations for fans, players, and even former players.Players do not only get hurt during the games, but mistakes also happen
“Either the big heavyweight guys like Brian McGrattan, or the smaller agitators. I would hate to see the unintended side effects of where hockey would go without fighting, without that threat of retribution. It’s a fast, violent game where we’re wearing weapons on our feet and essentially carrying a club. So while a two- or five- minute penalty is a bad thing, it’s not going to knock somebody off their path of destruction as much as somebody grabbing them and punching them in the face.” Guys in the NHL are literally paid just to go out there and either try to get under the stars of the other teams skin or just to go fight one of the other players to get the team all hyped up. Not having those guys in the NHL will just be like watching the World Junior teams play against each other. Or it could turn out to be total mayhem because players know if they hit the super star of the team real hard they aren’t going to have to fight anyone, so the stars of each team will automatically be targeted.
Hockey has become part of the Canadian identity but the fighting that occurs within the game has become a major area of conflict and discussion. The National Hockey League (NHL) should change its rules for fighting to immediately eject players from the game as well as a one game suspension. Changing these rules should provide greater player safety, could create better role models and focus the attention to the skill of the game. Fighting is a unique aspect that hockey brings. It has caused many serious injuries and has ended many careers.
A major issue in the sports world that has come about in the past decade is should fighting be banned in professional hockey. This essay argues that fighting should be banned in hockey. Fighting, concussions and CTE (Chronic traumatic encephalopathy) all have a direct correlation to one another. Additionally Repeated blows to the head causes concussions and multiple concussions cause CTE, the degeneration of the Brain. Furthermore Fighting caused the death of five former NHL tough guys. Finally, Fighting is becoming a rare occasion in the NHL it is dissipating out of the game. Although people protest for fighting to be banned the NHL, they have yet to do something about it. Fighting is still present in the game today, Fighting will give the
