In 1995, Disney created a movie to replicate the story of Pocahontas. The majority who saw this movie enjoyed it but others believe it tells a false story. Disney was not responsible, accurate, or respectful in their film. Pocahontas was an Indian princess who was the daughter of the Chief of the Powhatan Indians. Pocahontas played a vital role in maintaining peace between the English and the Powhatan Indians during expeditions. She died due to sickness at age 21. John Smith was an Englishman who joined the expedition to Jamestown, Virginia, and in 1608, would become the president of the Jamestown colony. The Pocahontas story mainly focuses on these two people and their interaction.

In the film, Disney was not responsible. Before watching the movie, many people probably didn’t know the story. Disney might have persuaded people with little knowledge of the topic to think that their story was true. First, Disney’s movie was aimed for a kids audience so key facts that might have been in the real story were probably omitted. Secondly, Disney portrayed the story as a romance and, according to John Smith in his “General History” book, he only mentions Pocahontas by saying, “Pocahontas… got his head …show more content…

When John Smith wanted to share his experience, he wrote two books. The two books that he wrote, according to Adam’s, “don’t match up.” They represent two different ideas. In John Smith’s first book he describes his experience as “kind” and “welcoming”. In his second book he describes his experience as “fearful” and “barbarous”. People today have theorized why Smith wrote two different views but Disney used sources such as John Smith’s second book to create their film. Disney can be seen as inaccurate because many people believe that Smith misinterpreted the “execution” and that the Powhatan Indians were just performing a ritual to enter John Smith into manhood.
