Around 25 million people in America suffer from depression every year, and every 11.9 minutes someone takes their own life. The podcast, “Drive Straight Ahead” explores the mindset of those who suffer with the depression in a modern day version of a coming of age story. Through this podcast the listeners take a journey with an unknown women by driving through what seems to be the road that led her to her downfall. The irony in the title of the podcast, “Drive Straight Ahead”, lies in the women's decision to sub consciously follow the direction given by someone else due to her own lack of direction. Through this idea we are able to join the women on her journey to an unknown place and what is believed to be a final destination. Developing at
The poem Rebirth of Slick problematizes the universal belief of success in a way that it is not only achieved by an individual, but rather a larger group of people. They protect their legacy to preserve their interests, pursue their dreams, and to continuously develop existing ideas that will broaden their influence. According to the urban dictionary, the meaning of “rebirth of slick” is “the sudden epitome of rap and hip-hop. The most original and realization of what goes down in the "hood" or lower class urban environments. Also, shows how those who live in these places do not seem to care of what happens around them and just live their life a cool, peace, groove smooth, jive, and roll”. On the other hand, the rebirth of slick is also a song composed by a hip-hop trio, Digable Planets.
Stanza 1: “The moon was a ghostly galleon…” The author compared the moon to a sailing ship to put emphasis on the fact that the sky is so vast, just like a sea. The “ship” is sailing the “sea”. Stanza 2: “And he rode with a jeweled twinkle, his pistol butts a twinkle, his rapier butt a twinkle...”
The poem As Traffic is a different kind of poem from the rests. It has words and sentence that you wouldn’t expect in other poems. For example “Bitch, Fuck, without Rubber” (Hayes, ll 14-15). These are just a few of the words the author says but why does he say them? What does he mean by them? What is he doing? These are just a few question that will be answered in the next couple of paragraphs.
Richard Blanco is a Cuban- American poet who was given the oppurunity to write an inaugaration poem for Barack Obama's second swearing-in. He wrote a poem titled "One Today" that praised the good and unique things about the United States and also the everyday people who's daily routines help to make America the proud country that it is.
Lorna Dee Cervantes' poem, “Poema para los Californios Muertos” (“Poem for the Dead Californios”), is a commentary on what happened to the original inhabitants of California when California was still Mexico, and an address to the speaker's dead ancestors. Utilizing a unique dynamic, consistently alternating between Spanish and English, Cervantes accurately represents the fear, hatred, and humility experienced by the “Californios” through rhythm, arrangement, tone, and most importantly, through use of language.
Furthermore, there was a strong lack of female empowerment resulting as there was a general strong dichotomy in tasks performed by each gender. However, the women’s new lives offered them a sense of liberation by providing a larger space of operation, in that they could explore additional activities previously limited or unexplored to them, such as teaching and gardening. Regardless, these observations paint a general brush of the women traveling and there always exist individuals, such as Sessions, who buck this trend.
Though the main character was unable to survive her flight, many other women both in the novel and in reality were able to embark and finish theirs. And the interesting thing about it is that these fictional and nonfictional females inspired each other to go forth and attempt their metaphorical and literal journeys even if there is a chance they are unable to succeed. It is because of these brave birds that women’s roles in society have changed so greatly within the last century. In no other time in history has there been such an expansion in women’s rights and roles and it is all due to women both real and fictional who went against societal
While reading both stories, they both seemed to share the same theme. The theme that both stories shared is the dedication to do work even if it isn’t necessary. In, “Clearing Paths to the Past” The person states they have an obligation to clear their sidewalk so others can use the sidewalk to get somewhere. In, “To be of use” the person telling the poem explains how they love to be dedicated to doing work even when they do not need to do the work with any effort.
This first stanza from the poem, explains the journey of a man driving through a sawmill town and his observations. Murray describes his journey through a small sawmill town in New South Wales whilst using strong, vivid imagery and emotive language.
The poems “Introduction to Poetry”, “Poem”, “Poetry Should Ride the Bus”, “How Poetry comes to me”, “How I Discovered Poetry”, and “Making It in Poetry”. These poems express their author’s thoughts on poetry beautifully. Each author gives their own interpretation of what poetry is to them. However, each poem carries small differences and similarities. At the end, each poem has taught its readers a new meaning of poetry.
There is a plethora of music that expresses the misunderstanding and isolation one goes through while in a corrupted state of mind. Recently, in late 2017, Logic’s song “1-800-273-8255” was on the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards. This song was specifically written to prevent suicide, as it’s named after the suicide prevention hotline. Those who suffer from any mental disorder, not just depression, can feel the need to take their own lives to escape the pain of their illness. In reality, it is not a solution. In Logic’s song, the lyrics change from “I don’t wanna be alive,” to “I want you to be alive,” and “I finally wanna be alive,” implying that the person’s change of heart was sparked by someone else begging them to stay. If not for someone trying to understand what they are going through, they most likely would have had second thoughts. Not only is the story of the music powerful and relevant, but it can help people struggling with the same
The main female characters in Everyday Use, Revelation, and Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?, are unique individuals who all share a common thread of strong belief. Poetry can be divided up into different forms, more easily expressing an author’s emotions and intent with their poetry. For analyzing purposes I chose the poems Self-Help by Michael Ryan, Ghazal by Agha Shahid Ali, Psalm 150 by Jericho Brown, and Emergency by Michael Dylan Welch.
The poem “Tractor” is written by Ted Hughes is literally about a tractor. The season is winter and the man is trying to start the tractor but is unable to do so because of the weather. Eventually, the man is able to start the tractor. However, while reading it further, this poem seems to be telling us that with determination, man can overcome many problems no matter how tough the problem is, using nature as a form of trouble to humans. Moreover, it also tells us that the journey to solving the problem is difficult. This poem is in nine stanzas, where the first four stanzas describe the process of starting up the tractor while the last five stanzas, describe how the tractor finally starts up and rejoices. The poet personifies the tractor
