Poetic Devices in I’ll Be Home For Christmas “I’ll be home for Christmas” was written by Walter Kent and Buck Ram and is often referred to as the saddest and maybe the best Christmas song of all time. The song was first written in 1943 and was revised 1948. This definitely is one of the best and saddest christmas song. Other than its great music it uses many poetic devices like repetition, imagery and being a narrative. This essay will describe why the use of these poetic devices makes it such a great song. Kent and Ram used repetition to describe how much the person in the song craved being at home for Christmas. They first used it by saying “I'll be home for Christmas” (2:1) this helped us start thinking what it is this person wants. Kent and Ram then go on to say “Christmas Eve will find me” (3:1) making it easier to visualize or think that he is having trouble getting home but still keeps a positive mindset. Finally the song says “ If only in my dreams’ (3:4) which makes us realize that he won't be able to make it home for Christmas this year. And that he has been saying how much he wishes he could get home before …show more content…
The imagery used in“I’ll be home for Christmas” plays a big part in the being such a great song. Kent and Ram did an amazing job of using the imagery, they first used it when the song says “I’m dreaming of a place I love even more than i usually do” (1:1) this makes us imagine that he is far from a place he misses dearly. Another cause of it being used is “ although it's a long road back I promise you I’ll be home for Christmas” (1:3) this makes the reader/listener realize that the place he misses so dearly is his house and that he is promising to a loved one that he will make it in time for christmas. The last case of the use of imagery is seen in “find me where the love light beams” ( 3:2) and he is obviously telling his loved one that he won't be able to make it in time but that she may find him in her heart
Poetry is known to be a creative thought or impassioned feeling using language and is expressed in many places in the world. A poem can have many different meanings according to how an individual interprets it. Various literary devices are used to bring out that interpretation and the sense of what the person thinks that is going to happen. In the poem “Saturday at the Canal” by Gary Soto and “Nothing Better” by The Postal Service the theme is sometimes in life you may go through tough times but it is up to you whether they will continue. Some literary devices that show the coming up from tough times are figurative language, imagery, and the mood of the poems/songs.
The scene before this metaphor describes the author 's realization of his forever departure from his childhood world as his presents are no longer from "Santa Claus", unlike his younger brothers. Christmas is a holiday filled with joy and laughter, however for the author, this Christmas meant the mark of his entrance in the adult world. As he said on page 344, paragraph 4, "...so much surprised as touched by a pang
In this poem, the speaker uses many poetic devices about mangoes. There is a rhyming pattern like ample lips and raisin tips. There is alliteration with dipped-and-dappled. The speaker uses mango as an image to represent a breast that feeds. The raisin tip is the nipple at the end of the mango. This poem is also an ode to mangoes as the speaker says “mango noon and mango night, mango fans the morning haze” saying this you can eat mangoes anytime and all the time.
Lorna Dee Cervantes' poem, “Poema para los Californios Muertos” (“Poem for the Dead Californios”), is a commentary on what happened to the original inhabitants of California when California was still Mexico, and an address to the speaker's dead ancestors. Utilizing a unique dynamic, consistently alternating between Spanish and English, Cervantes accurately represents the fear, hatred, and humility experienced by the “Californios” through rhythm, arrangement, tone, and most importantly, through use of language.
Similarly, the phrase ‘the next moment, you are no longer there’ is perhaps suggesting that he was shocked at seeing her go so suddenly. However, the fact that when she next reappears she is ‘perfectly framed shows us that the joy of seeing her after thinking she has gone for good is a surprise to him. ‘Fragrant survivors of last night’s frost’ shows us that the flowers are strong, which is a suggestion that their love is strong. In the fourth verse the phrase ‘my heart misses a beat at love for you’ shows us that the love was so intense that time seemed to stop too. ‘Knowing a time will come when you are no longer there’ shows us that he is not looking forward to that time and that he knows it is inevitable. ‘Meanwhile let us make sure we clasp each shared moment’ shows us that he wants to make sure they use their time together wisely, and ‘in cupped hands, like water we dare not spill’ shows us they know that their time together is precious.
“It’s about more than just the songs,” said Davis. “When you walk into a Hallmark store around the holidays, everything is Christmas - the carpet is Christmas, the window decorations are Christmas, it smells like Christmas candles and cookies. That’s the environment we try to create with our Christmas radio station.”

In Truman Capote’s short story “A Christmas Memory” imagery and symbolism are used by the author to show that friendship has no age limit. Truman uses very vivid details and many different types of figurative language to show his theme ,which is that friendship has no age. An example of symbolism is, “As if I expected to see, rather like hearts, a lost pair of kites hurrying toward heaven” (6). After getting the news of his friend’s death, he goes outside and almost expects to see kites. In this example of symbolism, the author shows us how deep a bond Buddy and his friend have by showing us a glimpse of Buddy’s mind and how his heart is going to heaven with his friend. Furthermore, the author uses some imagery when he gives us a vivid description
Edwin Starr’s War, and John Lennon’s Happy Christmas, demonstrates the catastrophe created by war. Through their songs, the necessity of peace is emphasised for the future of the world. “Oh, war, I despise cause it means destruction of innocent lives, war means tears to thousands of mother’s eyes. When their sons go to fight, and lose their lives.” It is evident that the lyrical terms formulates imagery, further empowering the message. In Happy Christmas, juxtaposition has been implemented to foreshadow the bright future if war is eradicated. “A very merry Christmas, and a happy new year, let’s hope it’s a good one without any fear.” The audience is able to empathise with both of these songs, “war means tears to thousands of mother’s eyes.” This line resonates with people young and old, mothers are considered the backbone, and always guiding their children to a bright path. Someone who gave them life and should always be internally grateful for. Thus, the complete contrast of the message in the song Happy Christmas,
The name of the song, Butterfly Effect, meaning the style of doors on his Lamborghini, sets the “rich” tone of the song. To start, he says, “Hidden Hills, deep off in the main”. The term “hidden hills” really means a wealthy neighborhood in the hills of California where many celebrities live. Next, M&M’s, sweet like candy cane, he is using simile to compare M&Ms to candy canes. Going back to the title of the song where he talks about his car, he also adds in the song, Bend laws, Bend lanes, is a metaphor meaning that he speeds in his expensive car, and gets caught by the police.

All of the decorations, food, experiences with friends and family, and especially all of the songs make the time of year different from all the others. One of the well known Christmas songs since it was written in 1862 by a Welsh composer named Thomas Oliphant is “Deck the Halls”. Many variations were created by all different people, Alex G and Tiffany Alvord’s version of “Deck the Halls” was created in 2014 by a recent duet signed by many record labels such as Tate Music Group and Mud Hut. The speaker gives his lover an image of the future and what all he can provide, basically saying all this could be us yours if you stay with me. He doesn't use much imagery, but in a way he doesn't need it, he rather wow her with nice things, not words.
In the sixth stanza he hopes that his daughter will be a "flourishing hidden tree", which is not rebel but kind and happy, but contains her happiness within a particular place. And additionally he wants his daughter to be not argumentative and aggressive, or perhaps quite and secure, "rooted in one dear perpetual place." When combined with the previous line, the last line clearly defines his hope fro daughter to live in a victorious life
