It comes with the job. All of us, commissioned as human beings, break in one way or another. Brokenness pervades our lives, although not always visibly. Perhaps the band Lifehouse and their song Broken became popular because the message of brokenness holds a power all can relate to. Yet not only the message, but also the effectiveness, meaning, subject, and use of poetic devices in Broken contributed to this song’s popularity. Overall, Lifehouse and their song Broken will continue to have pertinent insight as long as broken people still live. Lifehouse probably wrote this song out of personal experience. Something that happened deeply hurt the singer, stretching him to the point he feels broken. But when he looks around, he notices his life contains many broken things that help and point to good and hope. Although a broken clock cannot tell time, the song says it “helps me sleep tonight” (Lifehouse, Broken). Even though he had to break the locks on his mind and emotions, he can now express and deal with all of his emotions that got pent up inside. Lifehouse accomplishes getting this lesson across by two poetic devices, personification and repetition. When the song references the broken things, it often personifies them. For instance, the broken lights on the freeway “left me here alone” (Lifehouse, Broken). Also, The broken clock aids the singer in his pursuit of sleep. Lifehouse also gets their point across through repetition. Lifehouse used these two poetic devices to help get the theme of the song to the listener.
