It comes with the job. All of us, commissioned as human beings, break in one way or another. Brokenness pervades our lives, although not always visibly. Perhaps the band Lifehouse and their song Broken became popular because the message of brokenness holds a power all can relate to. Yet not only the message, but also the effectiveness, meaning, subject, and use of poetic devices in Broken contributed to this song’s popularity. Overall, Lifehouse and their song Broken will continue to have pertinent insight as long as broken people still live. Lifehouse probably wrote this song out of personal experience. Something that happened deeply hurt the singer, stretching him to the point he feels broken. But when he looks around, he notices his life contains many broken things that help and point to good and hope. Although a broken clock cannot tell time, the song says it “helps me sleep tonight” (Lifehouse, Broken). Even though he had to break the locks on his mind and emotions, he can now express and deal with all of his emotions that got pent up inside. And even though the broken lights on the freeway caused him to get lost, they also helped him remember he “[hasn’t] forgotten/ my way home” (Lifehouse, Broken). One thing the song wants us to …show more content…
Lifehouse accomplishes getting this lesson across by two poetic devices, personification and repetition. When the song references the broken things, it often personifies them. For instance, the broken lights on the freeway “left me here alone” (Lifehouse, Broken). Also, The broken clock aids the singer in his pursuit of sleep. Lifehouse also gets their point across through repetition. Lifehouse used these two poetic devices to help get the theme of the song to the listener. By repeatedly using the imagery of broken things functioning in different ways, the listener catches on to the meaning behind the
With such tension in these lyrics the song goes from giving the audience melancholy feelings, to leaving them with a sense of hope. In this lyric Underwood reminds us that though people may be gone, (like the victims of the attack on the Twin Towers and Sandy Hook shooting), today’s society must carry their memories throughout life.
My story has a meaningful story behind it. The story is deep for me and even for the artist and probably for many other people. Hearing songs like this can inspire you. It inspired me to be thankful for the people in my life. One day they can be here the next they could be gone. You never know what’s going on in their lives.
Everyone has been broken. Maybe some people still are and maybe others have been put back together by friends or loved ones. The fact still remains that everyone is or has been broken, and there is no way to stop that from happening. In Brian Selznick’s book, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, he touches on this topic on nearly every page. Many - if not all - his characters are broken in some way or another.
When the song came out in 2015, I was in the midst of graduating and truly coming to terms with the person I am. Going through this period of self-realization, the lyrics “You can't rush your healing/Darkness has its teachings/Love is never leaving/You can't rush your healing” (II. 19-22) really went to show me that the hard times I was going through were placed in my way as learning experiences. Listening to the mellow tunes of this song had such powerful repercussion on my mood as well. Not only the content of the words, reassuring me that everything will pass, but the actual vibrations of sound forced me into a meditative/healing state of
Jimmy Santiago Baca, What is Broken Is What God Blesses, is in a piece sort of passages ballad. The sonnet happens in the sand, in the mud on a homestead, in jail, in human, dispossessed homes, destroyed relational unions, the ghettos, barrio sand, and trailer parks. In addition, the word picture he uses is mates' impressions, ten-year-old child's uncovered feet in the mud, picking peppers, and, ruined soil streets loaded with challenging people. One of the structures utilized by Baca is the line break. A key idea, in a mental state, I see the lyric smashed divider that declares opportunity, to the
I thought if I could touch this place or feel it, this brokenness inside me might start healing. out here its like i'm someone else, I thought that maybe I could find myself if I could just come in I swear i'll leave. won't take nothing but a memory from the that built me. Some of you might know what song this is the chorus of. This paper is about how my life relates to Miranda Lambert's song The House That Built Me.
The song continues to venture into the theme of justice and injustice. Although all the evidence supports the Hurricane’s innocence, the community as a whole acts to ensure that injustice is served.
First, the song shows what love can actually do to you as a whole. It can make you feel like you lost a piece of yourself
The genre of the song repels negative attitudes and exercise the belief of freedom. The type of music would be categorised as Psychedelic folk which to many is considered exotic. This music is offbeat because it holds two different components of music, odd and pleasant. As we look at the psychedelic part it we may find that this is trying to convey a message of some sorts. Psychedelic is the component that the characters use this to convince the characters that “nothing's gonna change my world” , telling them that this will be better than ever. Trying to go into the minds of the character easing them into reality by taking the situation and slowing the speed to show the illusion of perfection. Focusing on the folk part we see a familiar part that was demonstrated in the previous world. Everything was jolly, nothing was wrong and when someone was down the town would bring back the spirits of the character. The folk part is trying to spark the image that even though things have changed in ways they are the same. These important characters are still
"Grey's Anatomy" is a popular drama doctor show to this day. They had a music event episode where everyone sang and they had two songs that display the symbolic cycle. Both pieces compliment each other because of their similarities in the symbolic cycle, birth and death. The visual display of the songs fit together because of the setting and how the music itself develops throughout each song. These songs were chosen to be in "Grey's Anatomy" because they illustrate real life of losing someone and being blind to someone's pain they try to hide. In "How to Save a Life" and "The Story" the composers develop the theme of life and death.
Bruce Springsteen’s song “The Rising” is a requiem to those who lost their lives on 9/11 trying to save others. He uses images, archetypes, and phrases with literal and figurative meanings to honor the personal virtues of first responders, console the mourners, and provide inspiration and hope to the country. Springsteen includes archetypes to alter the tone throughout the song. The firefighter made his “way through the darkness”, where he “[Couldn’t] see nothin’ in front of [him]” and “[Couldn’t] see nothin’ coming up behind”.
An idea that interested me in the song “Fix you” by Coldplay was how you will always have someone to lean on no matter what. When Chris sings “lights will guide home” he is using personification in this line because saying the lights will guide them is a human thing to do, as people guide each other which I think Chris is trying to demonstrate when he sings the lyrics “lights will guide you home.” It shows life itself because no matter how big the mistakes you make, no matter how bad life may seem, there will always be someone that will have your back. This reminds me of my friends who are always there for me whether its for when I’m feeling down or if I’ve had a bad day. These lyrics also emphasize that everyone goes through rough patchs in their life and they should let people try to help them. When my dog died this year, I didn’t take it well and I was distraught, but it made me going through the loss easier
The central message of the video is that there are things in life that you cannot let go because they are part of you.
It is a sin for anyone to destroy, in a blink of an eye, what they have been working on for months or even years. Therefore, one should always face the hardships with a strong will, hold their head up high when facing an upcoming storm, because that is the only way they can survive the war that is life. Right towards the end of the song, there is an extremely empowering line that says “this road never looked so lonely, this house doesn’t burn down slowly to ashes” which stands as a reminder that right when the challenge becomes harder, one should never forget what they are fighting for and simply give up. The amount of determination reflected in this line is the reason why I listen to this song whenever I feel defeated by the obstacles. It comes to spark the flame of determination in my heart when I consider backing
