Police brutality in the U.S. has been a phenomenon that has caught international attention in the last few years. As defined in thelawdictionary.org, police brutality is “the use of excessive and/or unnecessary force by police when dealing with civilians.” In many cases, civilians that were law-abiding and even unarmed were victims of police using unjustifiable force upon them. While independent organizations and activists have tried to eradicate this unacceptable behavior and phenomenon through protests and demonstrations, their efforts have not been enough. If law enforcement agencies, such as local police departments, educate their employees on the right and wrong ways to behave on the streets with civilians, the root cause of the problem will be addressed.

Police abuse remains a significant problem and not enough reform has been made to prevent it from occurring. Around 1000 people were killed by the police in 2015, and over 100 of them were unarmed. The intentional use of excessive force by a person with authority, which oftentimes ends with injuries and sometimes even death, creates a bad perception of police officers and distrust between cops and civilians. To rebuild the relationship between people and police reform needs to take place. Law makers need to refine the unjust criminal justice system, police officers need to obey the fourth amendment, and the city government needs to involve the community in major decisions.

Police brutality has become a huge issue in the United States. From the Rodney King incident to the riots caused after the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, perceptions of the police have become increasingly negative. Police brutality occurs when a police officer uses any excessive force in handling a legal situation with a civilian (Umbach, 2003). Excessive force usually involves getting into a physical altercation, or using items like pepper spray, a Taser, batons, or nerve gas to subdue a suspect. It can also involve verbal and psychological intimidation, sexual abuse, corruption, racial profiling, and false arrests. I wanted to examine the history, causes, and possible solutions proposed to put an end to police brutality in the world today.

To preface the topic of police brutality, it is important to understand that the practice of excessive force has been facilitated through law enforcement bodies throughout history. While these actions of brutality may seem commonplace due to our past standards, in no way are they acceptable in our present world. Police brutality is vicious and criminal when you think about it; it regularly consists of beating, shooting, and or killing citizens but not always innocent. These actions would be illegal for a regular citizen, with a possible life sentence if found guilty, but if a police officer is found at fault he or she often faces a significantly less severe punishment. Police militarization in a post-9/11 era has led to constant tales of abuse of authority by police departments nationwide. The issue is threefold. First, police brutality is growing as a national problem. The people charged with making the streets safer for ordinary citizens are becoming the enemy of the people, the villains, who consider themselves judge, jury, and executioner. In the last past years, our country has observed numerous cases of police brutality. It has become a controversial topic among communities that have witnessed police brutality take place in front of their houses. Officers are faced with many threatening situations every day, forcing them to make vital decisions and to expect the vilest and hope for the best. The law enforcement officers granted the ability to take any citizens' privileges to restraint and sometimes even their lives. Besides, with that sort of authority comes responsibility. For this reason, that is one major fear with that amount of discernment granted to law-enforcement officers. In today’s world, many people dispute over the corruption and lack of respect citizens receive from police officers on a day-to-day basis. People claim that police officers mistreat them with an unnecessary use of force just because of the power they posses over them. Background and Audience Relevancy: Throughout our nation, the views of citizens have drastically changed due to police brutality. Citizens are lacking the trust with in the police force because of the excessive or deadly force being used on fellow citizens. However, police brutality is defined as ‘the use of excessive physical force or verbal assault and psychological intimidation. Although the government might consider some forms of excessive and deadly force legitimate, it has escalated throughout the nation and has changed regulations within the police force.

The psychologist serves a great purpose in the law enforcement as well. The police psychologists provide services that are used to counter police use of excessive force. The psychologists are there to characterize the types of officers who are known to abuse force and to recommend psychology-based intervention that could help police managers reduce cases of excessive force. Some think that the police departments should rely mostly on pre employment screening to identify violence-prone candidates.

I think we all can agree that the police agencies, image has been ruined in every way you could possibly think of. I truly believe that no one honors the police agencies anymore. As technology has enhance over the years, far as cell phones, people are able to see what police officers are really doing while on the force. There have been many video release when police brutality was reveal, as well as how the police agencies respond to an incident. Over the years, community policing has declined. People just don’t trust the police anymore. The media has ruined it! The police is here to protect. Police agencies, faces a number of issues today, I found that preventing racial profiling, recruiting and retaining a skilled workforce, and reducing community violence were the most challenging. All points go hand in hand, to actually produce a solution to better the police agencies.
