I agree that it is easy to jump to conclusions when we have limited information, and that these two variables do not cause the other. Multiple variables can impact if cops commit crimes and if criminals are bolder when more police are on patrol and this situation requires further investigation into the community and into the police force to determine those variables. Conducting research into the reports is a great idea, and determining the level of severity of the reported incidence would be meaningful. Are the reportable events serious? Are they nuisance complaints? This scenario leaves us with many questions to be asked.
The Smithville city council assumes that crime persists because the city’s police force has too low a profile, but the memo never cites evidence to support this position. The council could do something as simple yet effective as asking the town librarian to review published studies to see whether a parallel exists between a high police presence and reduced crime rates. It could also hire an independent research
I do not think that what has happened because their behavior is a representation of the community but a representation of bad leadership and lack of training. There was an incident that occurred in one of our boros Christmas Eve there was this person who started their car while they were putting things in their car so at one point after the car was loaded they went into their Mothers home to hurry the kids which took less than a minute when they opened the door to step out they see their vehicle drive away. The vehicle was found within 15 minutes and nothing was missing what occurred was a very intoxicated 23 year old took it does not remember doing so and they found him asleep with the car running. The new officer could not reach the Chief and he has not attended an academy since he is part time so he thought since the car was not moving he could not charge him with anything and he could not charge without the Chief telling him what to do. Well the community is having a field day with this one but is it due to there being unqualified people where ever you go? No I would argue this belongs at the Chiefs door after all who would put an untrained officer out there along with limited training on a night when DUI's may be what you spend most of your time handling. I would argue against the Fatalism and Microcosm Argument for these reasons.
Community Policing took a different perspective on crime than August Vollmer. It shows that even though police officers are trained and respond to crimes on time, it doesn’t effect the crime rates. In the past foot-patrol was in place but it quickly failed due to poor management and not enough funds for the program (Bohm & Haley, 2014, Pg. 147). Community Policing was an idea to form a bond between the police and the citizens. If the police paid more attention to the minor problems in
I believe if the Kansas City Preventive Patrol Experiment was conducted today different results would be revealed due to the fact that police strategies and tactics have changed over the years in response to changes in society, public pressures, aren research. Police executives must continually reassess their organizational technology and make adjustments to improve the attainment of the goals of protecting life and property and maintaining order. Today, the knowledge base related to what works in policing is much farther along in it development than even a decade ago, making it possible for police executives to strive toward the objective of evidence-based policing (Cordner, 2016). Moreover, evidence-based policing does not replace
Since the 70’s police departments like Spokane Washington, I believe have proved that police visibility or presence in the community along with transparency working hand in hand with the community, have had a positive effect on preventing crime and providing communities with a sense of security (The Kansas City Preventive Patrol Experiment. (n.d.).
Police officers are individuals who enforce the law upon their community to ensure that their citizens remain safe. In the past couple of years, officers of the law have been involved in acts of brutality that seem to go beyond the proper measurements of protection for their citizens. Policemen are supposed to protect their citizens from danger and from harm, not impose a threat on them. The fact that officers have a history of abusing their power indicates that their trust amongst the community has been corrupted. Those who have been affected of police brutality feel as though they have been deceived. They no longer feel that police officers will protect them, but rather abuse them, and that is a problem. We have began to live in a community in which an individual feels frightened when seeing a cop, rather than feeling protected. Some individuals may argue that police brutality is not a problem due to the fact that it is not consistent enough to catch the attention of needing a solution. However, that idea means little when the level of brutality has led to the death of several innocent victims in some cases. We must not wait for there to be a pattern of death at the hands of police officials to consider this a problem. One death indicates that preventive measures must be taken to ensure that these officers are no longer put in the position to abuse their power to begin with.
In this paper, I will be writing about Police Discretion. I will start by defining Police Discretion then briefly discuss the use in domestic disturbances, minor misdemeanors, and traffic enforcement. I will also discuss the application of police discretion, the provisions it uses and how it is currently practiced. At the end of these brief descriptions, I will then present the myth that exists in regards to police discretion. And finally, I will end this paper with my personal opinion as well as a brief conclusion.
Communication is a vital tool in our society today because police officers could not serve the public effectively without good communication skills. A lack of the ability to listen or to speak effectively could result in a misunderstanding. Communication plays a very important role in the lives and jobs of police officers. Communication allows officers the ability to better manage evidence by interrogating witnesses and suspects and gathering information. This allows them to make quick and informed decisions. Police officers can only succeed if they master communication, both social and professional, so that they can be comfortable with the public and get their jobs done behind the scenes.
The role society plays in how these crimes are perceived, discussed, and what measures are taken to try to resolve these issues is ultimately what can change the thinking that how police officers handle things now is right. Racial injustice is occurring at the hands of people who are suppose to keep this country safe. There are many people who contribute to this problem, but where
However, as urban society evolved technologically and socially, so did criminal activity. Budgets are a constant issue with the modern police force, and typically there are not enough officers in major urban areas to adequately engage in the mission statements of their respective organizations. In fact, according to an article in the New York Times, police violence, a so-called "cowboy mentality" runs rampant in many jurisdictions. Due to staff shortages and schedules,
Police behavior is different across all communities. In fact, how police react to combat crime is affected by the management style of the various police administrators. Also, local politics will have a strong influence on how police react to crime. When police respond to a call, they will make a determination of the “cost and benefits” of their reaction.
“The essence of propaganda consists in winning people over to an idea so sincerely, so vitally, that in the end they succumb to it utterly and can never escape site from it” wrote Joseph Goebbel; a statement that Hitler strongly agreed with (Trueman). When Nazi Germany came to power in 1933, Goebbel was a master propagandist of the “Nazi regime and dictator of its cultural life for 12 years”. With Goebbles as a propaganda leader, Germany was able to develop an organized propaganda designed to to manipulate “ a cynic, devoid of inner devotions” and “ orchestrate a pseudo religious cult” (“Joseph Goebbels”). Subliminal propaganda proved to be a more valuable weapon than artillery and man power combined. Propaganda played a key part in every nation 's war effort; though, none were as efficacious as Nazi Germany. Germany knew the power that could be harnessed from propaganda and carefully cultivated, and molded their message to become one of the most dangerous countries in the world.
Hey, Melinda did you know “Deception can occur in any or all three stages of the detecting process during the investigation, interrogation, and court testimony” (Ciske, 2009). Criminals have every reason to expect that law enforcement officers are going to use deception against them, just as well as they lie to escape accusation. The law enforcement officers in this situation must take into account what sorts of methods are permissible and what the costs are. However, law enforcement officers have to take into account a confession is a substantial piece of evidence that can be presented in court. If the police have to lie to get a confession, it’s still up to the judge to determine if the suspect confession seems voluntary. People may disagree with police tactics during interrogation; however, police are not trained psychologist their deception during interrogating of a suspect has solved numerous of crimes. Therefore, law enforcement interrogations are videotaped inside the interrogation room to create an objective record of police questioning to which all interested and potentially interested parties may appeal, suspects, prosecutors, defense attorneys, and juries. (Wakefield & Underwager, 2014)
The main difference between an interest group and a social movement appears simple, but is complex. An interest group is organized to influence the government while a social movement uses popular participation to influence the government. The interest groups will have collective action problems such as free riders. As a result, interest groups will often use offering selective incentives, contributions form special donors, and relying on entrepreneurs. Interest groups can influence American politics by working closely with members of Congress.
Gun control in the US was first mentioned in the 1980’s. As the U.S. weaponry became more advanced and efficient we began to see the need to protect ourselves from the people around us. The right and ability to defend yourself is a right and ability everyone should have, but now we have evolved to the point where we are arming and increasing the danger that people face. The increase of mass shootings has raised the call for legislation to a fevered pitch for the men, women, children killed by insane men and women. There are mentally ill people all over the world, but the U.S. is the one of the only place that arms them efficiently. There are two viewpoints on this issue which is debated greatly across all platforms. Gun control is the belief we should regulate guns and create legislation to that limits access, weapons and ammo and then there's Gun rights advocates, those against any kind of limiting or infringing on the rights of the people. Carter Gregg Lee is a professor in sociology at Bryant University. “The magnification hypothesis is supported when one considers the lethality effect that assault by guns produces. Numerous studies confirm that gunshot wounds are much more likely to result in death than wounds inflicted by a knife. In comparing U.S. violence rates to those of its peer nations, gun control advocates observe that assaults in the United States are more likely to involve guns.” ("Magnification Hypothesis." ) Mr. Carter Lee has created a hypothesis that there is a correlation between gun prevention and homicide rates. As a gun Control advocate, he points his argument toward the actual damage and destruction caused directly by guns. Dr.Evan L Lipkins is an Internist in Glennville Illinois. He states “Creating jobs, teaching values in school, early screening for mental health and helping broken families may be far more important than taking guns away from people.” This is a common argument in Gun control circles. But to state that its a singular problem is completely illogical. While it's true that earlier mental health screenings would definitely be beneficial it won’t eradicate the problem. As long as guns are readily available to anyone who wants them The problem will continue to . People
