Political Conflicts And Differences Between Hinduism And Islam

INTRODUCTION: Religious differences have plagued South Asian countries for centuries. “Inter-religious violence result from horizontal inequalities and overlapping religious and ethnic group boundaries that, in the context of tense political transformation, consequently breed inter-religious grievances and violence” (Basedau, 2013). In simpler terms, inter-religious violence is an act of violence committed by one group of religious followers against another group of religious followers or institutions. It is an ongoing issue among Hindus and Muslims especially in India. India is home to roughly 80% Hindus, and about 14% Muslims, which leads to a lot of religious tensions between the two groups (Abernethy, 2002). Despite having a constitution that allows for freedom of speech and religion, the battle for wanting to be the superior religion has always been prevalent. Religion is an important aspect of South Asian society and many want to confide to traditions and religion whether it is to make a personal choice or a political choice. This paper will focus on the differences and similarities between Hindus and Muslims and how to create a balance between these religions to have open lines of communication.
