There’s polygamy, polygyny, and polyandry. Polygamy means a spouse can have multiple spouses. Polyandry means a women can have multiple husbands. Polygyny means a man can have multiple wives. Polygyny would be the right term to use since it’s the only one allowed in Islam. In Islam, there are two types of marriages permitted, monogamy and limited polygyny. Limited polygyny comes with some restrictions stated in the Quran. In Islam, marriage is a sign of God’s power and glory. Marriage is completing half the faith. The Quran says “from His signs is that He has created for you spouses from yourselves so that you may get peace [and tranquility] through them; and He placed between you love and mercy. In these are signs for the people who reflect” (Surah Ar- Room, 30:21). Ideally, monogamy is the main form of marriage in Islam. Polygyny is a provision in marriage that comes with restrictions and certain circumstances. The majority of Muslim men are in monogamous marriages. Polygamy didn’t first exist in Islam. It had existed long before Islam came in the world. The Bible says that, the grandson of Adam, Lamech, “took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah” (The Book of Genesis, 4:19).
