Polar bears are seen starving to death as they tread on the foreign iceless land. The earth’s ice, most commonly seen in Antarctica, begins to melt due to the rise in temperatures, rising sea levels as well. High temperatures affect the dry lands of California as deadly wildfires are produced throughout the North and South and have also taken the lives of people. All of these dire issues and more have gone viral through news broadcasting and the culprit of these devestations leads back to climate change. However, the source of climate change is ultimately the human race. After humans have been taking advantage of the earth for so long, depriving it of its natural and bountiful beauty, the side effects have been arising globally. Pope Francis …show more content…
I believe the most worrisome aspects, as all aspects contribute to each other in some way, are economical and political. The new president Trump and his administration have explicitly stated that they do not believe in climate change, even going as far as to cut programs that protect the environment or adding programs that are disastrous for our environment, for example creating the Dakota Access Pipeline that Native Americans and others have protested against. When we have leaders and politicians that are against the belief of climate change, although there are researches and facts that prove the existence of climate change, and drop climate change from the list of global threats, it prolongs the suffering of the people, the animals, and the earth who are affected by climate change. What makes matters worse is that those who are vulnerable and/or live in third world countries are more likely to be negatively impacted, which highlights the social aspect of climate change. When the political system that Americans look up to for support is failing to acknowledge such blatant facts, it limits the progress being made to live up to Laudato
In everyday news, there is always that one article that talks about how climate changes are scary and how it is affecting all of us. Some of us read it carefully and some of us just do not care. But it is a global issue that humans need to come together and think about. Throughout the history of human evolution, many revolutions have occurred (e.g. industrial revolution). Inventions of complex technologies and industries have caused pollution through the emissions of many greenhouse gases. One of the main climate change, increasing the temperature of the environment, is global warming. An increasing greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation and rapid burning of fossil fuels are continually causing the warming of the climate. The sunlight is the main source of energy on the planet but when greenhouse gases increase in the environment, it traps the heat radiating from earth toward space, causing the global warming. This “greenhouse effect” not only affects the plants but also animals including humans. Polar bear is one of those animal species that has been affected very much from this warming of the weather. Polar bears live
As Earths average temperature increases every year, the discussion of climate change has become a significant topic in the scientific community. Human activities such as powering factories, running automobiles or something as simple as burning wood for heat, emit dangerous greenhouse gases. What makes these greenhouse gases so detrimental is that they absorb the heat radiating off of Earth and keep it in the lower atmosphere creating a “blanket” of warmth around the Earth’s surface. This causes a drastic increase in the Earths average temperature. Due to the rise in temperature, the polar caps have been melting faster than ever, this is dangerous not only because of the risk of floods and sea level increase but ocean water will become less saline and ecosystems will be destroyed, impacting humans just as much as marine life. In the article, Understand faulty thinking to tackle climate change by George Marshall, Marshall states that most people in our world today do not care about climate change because it will not affect them, “Which points to the real problem: climate change is exceptionally amorphous, … no deadlines, no geographic location, no single cause or solution.” (Marshall 2014). Because the author makes it clear that climate change is indeed a great plight, and fails to be acknowledged by people, it is a significant matter that should be discussed
With the rise of calamitous news regarding extremists groups taking over certain states, countries threatening to go to war, and viruses spreading throughout the world; the outlook of humanity does not look good. In addition to these dire headlines is the matter of climate change, which, unfortunately, is not as alarming to the public eye. Nonetheless, climate change is a pressing matter as it will impact every facet of society from economy to even human survival. Perhaps the general public find climate change as a vapid subject because of its nature to react belatedly to human activity, and how it is often represented with numbers, graphs, and projections; things that are not compelling to those that do not understand its importance. Even
In “ Think Again: Climate change,” Bill Mckibben addresses the climate change catastrophe. The damage has already begun and it may be too late to save the planet. There has been many debates and controversies on climate change, but that is about to change, and scientists have accepted the fact that humans are warming the planet. In 2007, the Arctic Ocean melted more ice than ever before. Again in 2008, more ice was melted and the Arctic is now open water. In addition, other regions will eventually suffer from crop loss and food shortages. Eventually, climate change will force states to start conflicts and wars over resources.
The Earth is where all known life resides. Climate change threatens this blue world. The opinion of one in four Americans who are skeptical does not matter on a fact with mountains of research on it. Global and sea surface temperatures are rising; heat waves are becoming more common; and glaciers are melting. Scientists say “humans are causing global warming” which affects the sensitivity of the climate. The rise in greenhouse levels from carbon dioxide and other pollutants from use of fossil fuels is a uniquely from humans.
It cannot be denied that humans are both the greatest contributors to climate change and the most affected by it. Approaching the issue of climate change from an anthropocentric lens breaks down the issue and makes it much easier to understand and combat. Given that climate change is our fault and our problem, it is clear that we are also the only ones who can reverse or mitigate its effects. Through personal actions, education, and institutional restructuring we can lessen the impact of climate change and find hope in the
My grandmother, the President of Bitterroot Valley Recycling, has been saying that the need for the advancement of humanity and climate change issues are one for years, maybe it’s because of people like my grandmother that I’ve become interested in the Vatican Summit titled “Modern Slavery and Climate Change” and in particular Pope Francis’s words on how “Ecology is Human” (Gallagher p.1). Yes, everyone who believes in climate change issues knows that we humans are part of the problem, but it wasn’t until the July 2015 Vatican sponsored Summit that a religious leader ever took a stand on the more complex side of climate change (Gallagher p.1). Pope Francis claims that “humans are ecology” and therefore the real issues of climate change are aspects closer to home such as our dependency on technology, and how urban areas have a growing population of homeless/jobless citizens (Gallagher p.1). Pope Francis says that all of these issues are a part of climate change happening in the world today and that hopefully by joining together to face climate change, the United Nations, as well as separate countries and communities, will be able to help solve pressing issues in our world today (Gallagher p.1). After the
In this 21-century climate change is becoming worse and worse. There is water levels are rising, animals in cold areas are starting to die because of the rises temperatures, and humans' health is being at risk, why because of human activities. The activities that humans mostly do is burning fossil fuels and deforestation.
Recently, the idea of global warming has been under fire by people who claim it to be a hoax. Even “President-elect Donald Trump said Sunday that “nobody really knows” whether climate change is real” (Eilperin). Even with skepticism, the largest problem facing the world in coming years will undoubtedly be environmental issues. All across the globe, millions of people and thousands of communities feel the effects of global warming and deforestation daily. Whether through a loss of water, rising sea levels, or even a decrease in agriculture, the world is changing and suffering as a result.
The encyclical is aptly titled, "The Moral Dimensions of Climate Change and Sustainable Development." In the pope’s report, he not only affirms that climate change is a direct result of humankind, but links the degradation of the environment to poverty and societal inequality. As one of the world’s most trusted leaders, the pope’s encyclical is expected to significantly further environmental policy by converting skeptics into believers. Additionally, it is a call for political action to both parties in America and a prelude to Francis’s speech to the UN this coming September. At its minimum, it has reinitiated the global conversation of climate change, but the Pope’s message has the potential of aiding the passage of environmental legislation across nations as more individuals adopt climate change as a moral
In almost 200 pages, Pope Francis details his position on climate change in an encyclical released on June 18th titled Laudato Si (Praise be to You).
As the global temperature around the world increases, winter becomes short-lived, making it harder for polar bears, who depends on the ice sheet, to scavenge for seals. Once their habitat changes, the polar bears start to act strangely by eating food they rarely eat such as dolphins and humans’ leftovers. Even if they could find some food, it is not sustainable enough to feed the entire population, leading them into extinction. There are hundreds of climate-related articles relaying the effects of climate change happening upon, not just on animals, but also humans. As an effect of the abnormal changes in the climate, people experience negative changes in their natural environment, either through the weather or the atmosphere. As a result, people
Pope Francis’s encyclical on climate change has caused major discussions throughout the world and many religious leaders have chosen to follow his teaching. Archbishop Thomas Gerard Wenski, a native to Florida, is one of the religious leaders following Pope Francis and starting a movement throughout South Florida by sermons and teachings.
One of the largest governing bodies in this world tends to be overlooked by many who do not share the same religious views as the Catholic Church. Lead by Pope Francis the bishops represent 51 million Catholics and with their influential lobbying arm in Washington, they affect public opinion not just in the pews, but also in statehouses and Congress. In recent years, they have devoted their time and resources to fighting against abortion, same-sex marriage and contraception. Recently the have found common ground with Republican politicians and evangelicals who argue against the evidence that climate change is caused by human activity.
We as a society have reached one of the most crucial time periods in the history of our world. Due to the way we have used the resources on this earth we have created a situation in which our climate is drastically changing. The burning of fossil fuels such as coal and oil has caused gases like carbon dioxide to become trapped in the atmosphere causing a natural greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect has caused the earth’s average temperature to rise and has resulted in arctic glaciers melting. These glaciers had gases trapped inside them that are now being released into the atmosphere further raising the earth's temperature. Due to the way we are polluting our air we have caused global warming. This global warming has caused stronger natural disasters such as hurricanes and wildfires putting our society in more danger than ever before.
