Positive And Negative Effects Of Globalization

Globalization refers to the development of an integrated world economy, exchange of cultural views, thoughts, and products (Wikipedia, 2013). Pologeorgis (2012) states that, essentially globalization began with the exploration and settlement of new lands. Communication and transportation advances have aided in this process.

Is Globalization ultimately positive or negative, or somewhere in between? I believe it depends on who you ask the question, and how it affects their life. For myself, I can’t get passed the negative way it has impacted my life and others around me in the same situation. Those of us who have lost our jobs and livelihood and are now labeled as “the long term unemployed” have seen our jobs eliminated and outsourced overseas; find it hard to feel positive about globalization. Watching families lose their homes and children going hungry is a disgrace considering we are the greatest country in the world. Maybe we are our own worst enemies to a degree. According to our reading assignment 'Globalization 101', globalization is "a process of interaction and integration among the people, companies, and governments of different nations, a process driven by international trade and investment and aided by information technology."

Globalization is the process of the world becoming better communicated, which promotes the adoption of common cultural aspects, the international exchange of goods and services, and foreign investments, thus creating a global market and encouraging division of labor.

Globalization can be defined as ‘international integration’, which can be described as the process by which the people of the world are unified into a single society and functioning together. This process is a combination of economic, technological, and political forces (dictionary.com).

Globalization on the fields of political, social, as well as economics has been on the rise since 1970. Globalization has ended the days of working abroad and trading across your own lands as being a luxury for people and companies, it has made it become much easier for companies to expand across borders without a lot of hassle. Today most companies need to have a footprint in the global world and trade internationally to stay competitive.

One negative consequence of globalization is the collapsing of the internal market in many countries.

A world united, a nation of the free, yet countries are spited, this is no longer a place where diversity reigns supreme. The world of music, art, literature, films and other avenues of merchandising have allowed for the United States of America to expand their market into the rest of the world. McDonald’s can be found anywhere from Jerusalem to Japan, out of top movies grossing across the world only four are non American, and the cultures that once made this world a colorful and lively place are vanishing. The use of pop culture in order to increase the globalization of Americanized products has recently come out of the shadows and is now the main route for market. Many countries are upset with the stipulations and implications associated with what they perceive as Americanized globalization, thus boiling the tensions between the rest of the world and the United States. If globalization continues in this manner these tensions will the reach their breaking point, and isn’t that clear sign of the trouble and unwelcome globalization?

The HIV virus was not discovered until the 1980’s therefore, there isn’t much reliable data on how many the disease affected before then. The most commonly believed theory on how HIV began to effect humans is the “butcher/hunter” theory which believes human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was cross spread from chimpanzees to humans by eating the animal or by getting the chimps blood into the hunter’s open wounds while hunting or butchering. Since this occurred, there has been a worldwide epidemic of AIDS. According to the World Health Organization, this is “one of the world’s most serious health and development challenges.” Globalization is the development of an increasingly integrated global economy marked especially by free trade. Although there are many positive outcomes of globalization such as more wealth and equality in all parts of the world, there are some negative outcomes as well. One major example of a consequence of globalization is the AIDS epidemic. This is partially because of international travel and population mixing. The AIDS rates are much higher in poorer countries mainly due to the lack of undeveloped health services. “According to statistics, by the end of 2012, more than one million Americans had been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS (aids.gov, n.d.). Additionally, at the end of 2011, 34 million people worldwide (with 2.5 million newly infected), 23.5 million people in Sub Saharan Africa, 4.8 million in Asia, and 1.4 million in Eastern Europe and Central Asia

Throughout the years, the issue of globalization has been condemned by many despite the countless benefits it provides around the world. Globalization has been proven more beneficial than detrimental due to its advantages to the environment, developments in a poor country, and the change and fluidity of cultures.

Since the origins of the Silk Road during the Han dynasty, the world has been sharing, collaborating, and learning new ideas from all over the world. This is now known as the term “Globalization”. As Webster Dictionary states, globalization is “the development of an increasingly integrated global economy marked especially by free trade, free flow of capital, and the tapping of cheaper foreign labor markets,” (Webster, 1). Since then, the creation of technology has spurred and launched the spread of globalization. It has now had an effect on every aspect of our daily lives, including our environment, culture, political system, economic prosperity, and even on our physical well-being (What is Globalization, 1).

Globalization plays a defining role in the expansion of society, both politically and economically. While globalization encompasses many different sectors of daily life, the negative implications of the practice, such as exploitation of workers, damage to the environment of the host country and cultural deterioration outweigh any rewards earned through the process.

Across the world, globalization is one of the most significant aspects that has occurred over the last fifty years. It allows a country to integrate economically with other countries through a global network comprised of people, trade, and transportation. With the global landscape only becoming more intertwined, globalization and its inherent pros and cons seem to be here to stay. In many areas, global powers tend to lack in rectifying the negative aspects and only focus on the positive side. America, for example, is a leader in the globalization efforts, even though it has greatly effected job opportunities at home, widening income gaps, and an increased standard of living due to fluctuating world markets.

Globalization is the process of increased interconnectedness among the countries most in the most known popular areas of economics, politics, social, and culture. All of these areas are key aspects of each country and what makes them individualized. Globalization allows for countries to be able to be individuals without the conflict of their differences because of the power used to work as a whole globe. Globalization is a positive thing for the entire world, it allows for lots of development in our world by the connection there is between all of the countries interdependence on each other. The different points of globalization claim that it will lead to convergence of income, access to knowledge and technology, consumption power, living standards, and political ideas.

Globalization refers to the interconnection among countries, politically, economically and culturally. Globalization has come into existence due to the following factors: (i) betterment in transportation and communication, (ii) human and capital mobility, (iii) increasing formation and existence of NGOs and multinational corporations.
