Positive Changes In The Early 1900's

The early 1900’s was considered the Progressive Era. The rise of Fordism was happening and the assembly line. This was providing more and more jobs. The working woman was on the rise as well and women were working for wages instead of being home. The Progressive Era changed America as we know it (Eric Foner, Give Me Liberty, pg. 693).

Many social movements throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries shaped the Progressive Era. Towards the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century the economy was thriving. Industrialization was blooming with new achievements that were being brought to America. However, many problems were also brought. The Progressive Era tackled these problems. The Progressive Era made an immense change on America’s economy and society. This Era was a time of extreme change. Major changes were made in the economic and political levels during the time of this era. Many of the problems were problems of the urbanization and industrialization periods. The Progressive Era had many successes and many failures, however, the successes overshadow the failures. The progressive era was a response to the problems that were caused by the movements after the Civil War, problems of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the era was successful in addressing problems such as public education, the Gilded Age, and living conditions.

During the Progressive Era, pressure from labor, suffrage, and conservation movements profoundly changed the course of American history. Many of the reformers' ideas clashed with the male-dominated, capitalist economic structure present at the turn of the century. Some of the intended reforms opposed the current system, but the level of social unrest necessitated change. Businessmen and activists alike initiated the reforms during the Progressive Era. Government, due to the intention of calming the common man and quieting the seemingly more and more vocal middle class, supported them. In the final analysis, from the year 1900 to 1920, Progressive Era reformers were successful in bringing about reform to the United States.

The progressive era was a time period in America after reconstruction that took place from 1900 to 1920. The progressive era focused mainly on social and political reform, trying to fix America's economy by working towards equal conditions for individuals, stopping political corruption and increasing government intervention on social and economic issues. Progressivists were social activists and political reformers working to improve conditions and the treatment of the American people. They believed that the government could be a tool for change. Progressive reform started out as a social movement and later on took a more political stand. The progressive era was successful in the fight to reform the United States by improving industrialization, urbanization cities, and reforming America's social and gender classes.

The Progressive Era was a time period between the years 1900-1920 and it marked a time in American history in which society was bursting with enthusiasm to improve life in the industrial age by making political and social changes through government action that ultimately led to a higher quality of life for American citizens. Progressives were known for their beliefs in limiting the power of big business, strengthening the power of the states, and were advocators against corruption and social injustice. At the turn of the century the United States of America was launched into the Progressive Era, which called for massive reform across a variety of areas such as, politics, social life, and economics. Through 1900 and 1920, progressive reformers in the presidency and congress brought about reform from the federal level to the national level.

The era of progressive reform was short, 1900 to about 1917, but much was accomplished and done in this short time span. Evils like child labor and social ills were thought curable by progressive optimists like John Spargo and Upton Sinclair but the main focus was urban America. The progressive reform movement was a period of awareness where people sought to change the injustices of society for example, Anti-Trust laws, recognition of environmental destruction and conservation of national park land, and improving the American way of life through significant areas of reform like women’s suffrage.

The progressive movement developed in the early 1900’s in response to the problems caused by the age of industry. Between the 1890 and 1920, the progressive era was an attempt to solve the economic and social problems. These problems lead the nation to a downfall. The main goal of the progressive era was to expand the democracy, change unfair business practices protect consumers and eliminate social ills. Although there were problems many laws and acts were developed the solve them.

The Progressive Era brought great change for America. The movement emerged during a time of great need in America. Corruption and poverty were continually growing problems. The Progressive Movement brought change for business and politics, and it also improved the daily life of an American. Looking back, the movement had its flaws. It lacked togetherness, and not all of its changes lasted.

Black Americans faced several harmful social, economic, and political conditions in the United States of America during the Gilded Age. One of the unfair social conditions they faced was segregation. For example, in Florida, Kentucky, and Mississippi, the Jim Crow Laws required separate schools for white children and children of color. In Georgia, blacks barbers were not allowed to serve white women or girls. In Virginia, theaters that attended by white and black people had to separate the two races into different sections of the theater. Many argued that the two races were separate but equal, however that could not be further from the truth. Separate does not equal equality. It was still the segregated South. Hotels, movies, water fountains and city busses were segregated. Blacks spent money in downtown stores, but were still refused seats at lunch counters.

During the turn of the century, in the 1900’s, conditions were harsh in working areas and big businesses were growing largely. There were many things wrong with the time period, and Theodore Roosevelt recognized this. Theodore Roosevelt was the first president to introduce progressive reforms and restrictions to the country. This impacted many areas of people and businesses. Areas of reform included conditions for the coalmine workers, civil rights, and breaking trusts in businesses.

One of the first things that the Progressive Era did was to expand its democracy. It focused in cleaning and improving the government that was caused by the Gilded Age, according to the text book. The Progressives focused in having in equality participation in voting, as well as political convention, allowing the public to actual make their own political choices. The goal was to expand this right, so freely the people were able to choose their next senators and leaders and for once stop the political corruption putting end to it. In addition, the Progressive Era also focused in creating a social welfare reform for the public. Some of the things that the Progressive analyzed were unemployment, minimum wage law, ending women’s suffrage and getting rid of child labor. The progressive era occurred throughout the early 1900s. It main purpose was to improve everyday life in our nation during the industrial age by moderating the political, social, and economic aspects that were involved. Many progressive goals were created to reform and limit the power of big businesses and corporations, giving our people more of a say in government, and strengthen social justice in the nation. The progressive era reformers and the federal government were highly effective in bringing about reforms at the national level, but it had its flaws as well.

During the Progressive Era from 1890-1920, America saw three new presidents: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and Woodrow Wilson. This period of time is known as the Progressive Era due to the political and social changes made to move away from a laissez-faire government to a more active government by the administrations of these presidents. Prior to this period, Americans had to suffer through poor working conditions, low wages, social and class inequality and become victims to large corporations that took advantage of the people. In particular, the administrations of Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson established the key principles and ideas of economic reform and social reform, which would end up returning the power from the manipulative corporations back to the government, establishing a model for a more active role for the federal government, and improve the lives of Americans. However, even though Roosevelt and Wilson had similar intentions of reforming America, they both had different means of achieving it.
