Hallmark events are one-time or recurring events that are usually characterised by positive image and uniqueness of the destination, high level of media exposure and being referred to as ‘mega’ or ‘special’ events. Hallmark events can include cultural, political, religious, commercial and sports events of international status. The aim of this event is to gain competitive advantage, create interest, attract attention and to ensure high prominence in the tourism market (Page & Connell, 2014).
The FIFA World Cup is one of the largest and most prestigious sporting hallmark events in the world and it has a great influence on economy, society and environment of the host country (FIFA World Cup, 2014). Hallmark events such as the World Cup have an

However, as discussed in this study, hallmark events not always bring only positive effects. For example, in 2010 South Africa hosted less tourists as it was predicted and faced intense public investment, as a result there has been a consequent fall in GDP. Although, the Olympic Games in London in 2012 had more positive impacts, such as economy growth through the job generation, investments and additional spending by tourists (Bevan, 2014). At the moment, it seems that the FIFA World Cup did not boost Brazilian economy, however, it raised an awareness about the difficulties that Brazil is facing, such as human trafficking and increasing level of poverty. It can be stated that several year must past in order to see the real outcome of the tournament, because at the moment, it seems that the FIFA World Cup did not improve ecological situation of Brazil, did not help the underclass to deal with the difficult living conditions, the level of child prostitution did not dropped. Therefore, it seems that there is a bigger need in improving education system, health care and living conditions of society in general rather than in a new stadium or a hotel. The enormous amount of money that has been spent on the World Cup could bring a significant change in the lives of the local people and make a great stride towards better
With the establishment of soccer in England, and its growth across the globe, the impact of the sport could be seen on the many different countries that played it. Take the Ivory Coast for example. This is a country that was in civil war until its team qualified in October 2005 for the 2006 World Cup, after which its captain, on behalf of the team, asked for the country to come together and was fairly successful as the country’s president resumed peace talks with the opposition and eventually had a deal in place (Cahill). Here the ability of soccer to bring a nation together, as well as literally stop a war, is seen. The ambitions of the nation become more important than the separate goals of the individuals, acting as a cohesive agent. Another advantageous impact that soccer has on nations is its contributions to the economy. An excellent example of a positive economic impact
Soccer has been described as the most beautiful game in the world. It is certainly the most popular; it’s played by more than 265 million worldwide! Every four years, thirty-two countries from around the world gather - after going through a grueling qualifying process - to compete for the honor of raising the golden World Cup trophy.
Contrasting to Document 1, by Caio Megale from What did the World Cup do to Brazil’s economy? about why having the World Cup in Brazil is ultimately a great benefit to Brazil, Document 2, by Paul Dimeo from Hosting Major Sports Events: Hidden Costs and Policy Dilemmas, believes that the harms of hosting a major sporting event in no way outweigh the negatives. Overall, Document 2’s argument is stronger because of the author’s more effective use of inflammatory language, use of statistics, and outside sources, even though Document 1 does have a much stronger credibility. These articles, though, find very similar neutral effectiveness of reasoning and addressing counter arguments.
For the social impact on the host country, the Olympic Games primarily boost the nationalistic pride of the citizens. The Olympic Games increases the civic pride of the residents, and this is thought to increase individual philanthropic giving. Similarly, hosting the Olympics causes local companies to increase corporate philanthropic giving. The Olympic Games also leads to an increase in nationalistic and neighbourly feelings, which lowers crime rates. Areas in which there are significant infrastructures developments will also tend to have lower crime rates due to property rejuvenation. The hosting of the Olympic Games is also believed to increase the health of the people in the host country due to an increase in sports participation following the execution of the Olympic Games (Feblowitz, 2013). Overall, it is suggested that there are many social benefits to hosting the Olympic
Soccer, the most popular sport in the world that has brought cities and nations together can be used as a metaphor to show how the world has grown together over time. Soccer, more commonly known as “The Beautiful Game” or “The World Game.” When the world stops for 90 minutes to witness that one thing we all understand, this is soccer. Soccer was first Recorded during the second and third centuries B.C. in China, where people would kick balls into small nets. The football association was started at the Freemason’s Tavern in 1863; it eventually would change to FIFA in 1904, as countries from around the world would join the association. (Jezek) Eventually as the association would expand and gain popularity they
Since its conception, soccer continues to dominate the global sports scene. As of 2015, 265 million people play soccer in the world. This widely known game was invented two centuries ago in England and quickly became one of the most popular sports in the world. Soccer is also exceptionally influential in the political world. The sport has the capability to spark war and bring peace to entire nations. Along with its effects on the political world, soccer is also a considerable part of many cultures. The daily lives of people culturally and politically would be vastly different if it weren’t for the major influence of soccer.
Different revelation has been made from the first trail of the local bodies corruption on The FA, Brazilian FA and others to the head of the soccer association. The authors have mainly argued about the effects and the work that have been done to stop corruption from soccer. Although many committees have been formed to investigate the situation of corruption in today’s soccer there have been a very little change to it. I believe the increasing corruption in soccer can have very bad effect on the game which can eventually lose millions of fans and followers. The corruption has caused very negative impact towards the next generation of players and supporters that their favorite game has been ruined mostly by some people with much control on it due to corruption. The main problem that have caused corruption in my view and many of the articles and journals on corruption on soccer is the unmanaged distributions of funds allocated only by certain number of people without discussing with the committee. The sole power of some people like the former president of FIFA Sepp Blatter has caused an unbalance in the account of these bodies. The details of the distribution of funds has to be transparent and selling their votes by taking money from someone has to be stopped in order to make this game meaningful
In “The Survival of the Top Hats”, a story of Brazilian soccer clubs and monetary power is told, and Foer’s comparison and use of soccer to explain real world events does not work well in regards to the study of Economics. When talking about the styles of Brazil’s teams in a worldwide sense,
In our socratic seminar about the article “Soccer’s Corrupt Soul,” we talked about FIFA’s deep-rooted corruption and where their greed has lead the World Cup’s future. FIFA is soccer’s main governing body, an oligarchy composed of very wealthy and powerful people. It has been discovered that these corporate bigwigs were associated with many deceitful and dishonest acts in the pursuit of making more money.
The sport of soccer, in Brazil is considered a people’s game,it started as a white players sport and then moved to blacks. The country had a complex national identity, made up of all different racial groups; soccer was the one thing that Brazilians could identify with. The poor Brazilians found self-worth in soccer much like the lower-class in Peru. For many Brazilians the sport derived from overcoming poverty, the poor turned to this sport

Research shows that soccer is the world’s most popular sport. Many people might not realize that soccer is the most important sport played in the world. Billions of people watch the telecasted national teams from countries around the globe compete for the World Cup. The history of
The negative impact of recent Olympic Games on the host country has caused controversy on whether this event is sustainable. The Olympics have a huge impact on the economic, social, and environmental aspects of the country, but the multiple viewpoints show that everyone perceives these impacts differently. Furthermore, assuming that one aspect brings positive impacts to the country, there is always a chance that another aspect is influenced differently. The cost of the Games is one of the largest impacts on the country, and the Olympic Games in 2008 cost $42 billion alone (aperianglobal.com). Additional factors, such as the pollution caused or the drawbacks of tourism, have also led the media to question whether the Olympics are worth the
