“Do you not know that a man is not dead while his name is still spoken?” Quoted by Terry Pratchett, this principle means in its simplest form, we will remember a deceased individual as long as we honor them. Which is why we must honor our fallen soldiers, for their service puts us in eternal debt. They fought with their lives on the line and everything to lose in order to restore our independence. Hence, it is crucial to honor them through the wreath ceremony to remind Americans of their sacrifices, to dignify the unknown soldiers who were lost at our country’s gain, and to remember those we love.
Recognizing the sacrifices of our men is infinitely important. Over years and years of seemingly-endless battles, so much American blood has been shed. Lives have been lost for vast reasons: freedom, liberty, and independence. Without the ultimate sacrifice of our soldiers, we wouldn’t even have a country in the first place. Sacrifices like these are valuable and must be remembered forever.
The soldiers themselves need to be acknowledged as well. Every soldier was once just a citizen, not yet dressed in uniforms of red, white, and blue, beaming with the sunlight of trodden battlefields. Lesson after lesson, historians taught us names and dates we’d never remember. They told how our lives forever changed by the sacrifices, as if we knew them. On the other hand, what about those we do know and love? Personally, my Uncle Kevin was involved in the military. Though he is not with me anymore, my family cherishes his life every single day by keeping pictures of him and telling his stories keeps his name alive.
