Quick and athletic quarterbacks for example are able to go on a run before throwing passes, while others prefer to stay behind their offensive linemen and pass the ball. Others are better at throwing the ball long distances, others short. Their whole skillset is defined by attributes such as acceleration, strength, throw power etc. When selecting your team, bear in mind that your quarterback should suit your playing style. Athletes are sometimes overworked because coaches and colleges think they need to practice all the time. College athletes go through grueling practices, meaningful games and practice over 40 hours a week (Kahn). These athletes spend too much time practicing to work on actual college class work. Athletes are more of an employee than a student with the amount of practice they have. These players do not have enough time to do it all. “the schedule is akin to a full time job, with 40 to 50 hours a week devoted to football-related activities”(He). Football players, whether it is practice or not, spend way too much time doing football activities to get homework or other school related things done. Sports are a big part of these kid’s life but it should not be their entire life. Athletes will have nothing to fall back on if colleges work them so much with practices and not enough with school. Having all of this practice time may not help them prepare for the real life after college. All that colleges would have to do is have the sports teams focus a little bit less on practice time and maybe a little bit more on actual school. Forty hours of practice a week, the average amount of time spent practicing for football players, all for a one hour game, the average time of one game of college football, takes dedication. That is not even counting the time spent icing, resting, and studying the playbook or film, not to mention the school work to be kept up with for college and high school students. Most athletes have become used to the grind and juggling three or four time consuming activities all at one time while being successful at each. Waking up at the break of dawn, following a schedule, and suffering consequences when a bad choice is made creates character and discipline that is often needed for many little league, high school, and college athletes. The most important non tangible thing sports teach anyone is how to get back up after falling, how to get knocked down but get right back up and keep going, how to move on from failure and overcome it, focusing on the next important part of life. Being a student-athlete, your main priority is school but, with a busy and jammed packed schedule it can get a little overwhelming. With a busy schedule, student athletes have no choice other than to manage their time wisely. Along with learning time efficiency, participating in sport teaches you to be goal oriented. When you’re involved in sports, you push yourself physically and emotionally. You begin to set goals to better not only for yourself, but to better your team as well. “To say the first half of the season has been emotional would be a huge understatement. Getting hurt when you feel like you have the best team you’ve ever had was a soul crushing moment for me. Then to learn it’s not three of four weeks but 10 is another blow. And through it all you have a tremendous amount of guilt on having let your teammates, fans and organization down.
