Process paper: How to Learn a Song
If you want to understand and learn a song there are many steps to do so. Just hearing a song is not good enough. It’s much more complex than that, although that is a step to learning a song. You have to understand the lyrics to the song, understand the composer, and personal information.
First step to learning and understanding the song is to listen to the song a couple of times. Try to capture some words to the song that makes sense to you, something easy to remember. You shouldn’t have to think about that line because, it is so easy you just know it. It is also very important while listening to the song to understand the beat of the song. The reason why learning the beat is important is so that you understand the flow of the song, so you don’t sing or think of the lines to early or late. This is a very crucial step to learning how to sing/rap a song. Without the lyrics you have no clue what you are saying. You are better of mumbling the song acting like you are singing/rapping along with the song. It is best to go on the internet and look up song lyrics. Read over the lyrics a couple times so it is easier to remember the song. After that play the song and try to sing/rap along while still looking at the lyrics. Once you are able to sing/rap along with the song while looking at the lyrics, try to sing/rap along with the song without the lyrics. This process is hard. Once it is easy to remember the song without the lyrics in front of you try to sing/rap the song without the words playing and without the lyrics in front of you. This is a hard step but, once you get the hang of it, it will be a piece of cake to sing/rap a song. First of all, before I even begin, I want to say thank you to all the people that helped me learn more about myself. Anyway, I am a mostly a musical and spatial learner because I love music and it always calms me down. I can also easily remember the tune of the song after I hear it once or twice. I think that this can help me change the world because my dad has went almost everywhere in Asia and has done so many things for the continent with his band and church that he is in. I also want to achieve great things with him. As a global citizen, I think I can change the world with my music. I’ve already been playing in an orchestra (it’s in the Arvada Center), competed in a few festivals to with prizes, so I think I can also achieve all these great things that are still waiting for me. Being a musical learner has helped me made through all these things. I don’t want to give up.
The earworm strongly relies on the phonological loop which is a short-term memory system located in your auditory cortex. The phonological loop can best be pictured as a record that plays over and over again without stopping, but only playing a part of the song. That may be a reason why you only remember parts of the song; the phonological loop is a short-term memory system. A lot of the time, people may get the song stuck in their head because they can’t remember how the song ends, only the particular chorus of the song. Another reason why you may only remember parts of the song is because “certain pieces of music may have properties that excite an abnormal reaction in the brain.” (Synapse) The songs will most likely be catchy, which will contribute to the earworm effect. There may also be a psychological reason to why some songs are more likely to stick in your head. They include memory triggers, emotional states, and stress levels. Psychologist researchers may even be able to treat patients with memory loss by studying music memory. “Tracking an earworm in a scientific setting can be a near-impossible task”. (BrainFacts).
Listening to the lyrics of your favorite song you automatically start to have a connection with that song. Then the song starts to represent you and your life because of the lyrics. Some songs show about being a fighter,having freedom, or just being you. There's a billion of songs out there and there's a billion of people who connect with those songs. Usually the most common reason why some songs represent people is by their past experience. For me some songs represent me because I decided to follow my dreams,living in the moment, and get right back up.
When it comes to thinking of how I should structure a song, I think of how I structure a paragraph. Over the course of time I learned new ways to add ideas onto a paragraph that relate to my topic. Many of my friends always complain about how their essays require so many words to write about, and question how they’re going to come up with supporting details and ideas related to the topic. In these songs, lyrics were repeated. Repetition draws the listener’s attention to particular words or phrases. In the song, Time of Your Life, the singer repeats the line, “It’s something unpredictable, but in the end it’s right. I hope you had the time of your life.” This line is repeated throughout the song multiple times. The singer is emphasizing the fact that anything can happen when you make your choice but in the end, you have to just relax and be happy. He wants the audience to really understand it. In the other song, the line, “Move along, move along. Just to make it through” The singer is repeating the term, “Move along” because that is the main message in this song. It is to move along when things seem bad. The singer wants the audience to really get the message and to feel good when they relate to this song. Different songs can have different intentions on what message they are trying to send to the listener. As the listener, they are the only ones who interpret what they think about the song or if they like it or not. To me certain songs have lyrics that tell stories and teach life lessons and other songs I don’t even have to listen to the lyrics to like the song. Songs can reflect different sides to a person and may also relate to people’s lives. Through my three songs “Logic – The Come Up” and “Yung Dash – Momma I Made It” they represent the saying of “You will get knocked down but it’s your choice whether to get back up or not” as well as not letting anyone who doubts you get in your way with whatever you are working for.
Rhythm and sound is not a language. On its own, it is a medium that can be heard without the need of understanding. As music is exist globally, this would mean that millions of people are no stranger to it. Songs and song lyrics can take many different forms. Like poetry, they tend to use many different literary elements to convey a story. While most songs don't necessarily have a rhyme scheme like some poems, they do however use elements such as imagery, diction, and many more elements that can be found in poetry. The four songs “Rule Britannia”, “Land of Hope and Glory”, “Waltzing Matilda”, and “We are the Boys from old Florida” demonstrate the use of poetic elements to tell a story.
Luckily, before the song started, the artist explained in English what the song was about. So, even though I did not understand the words in the songs, I knew the overall messages. After about two songs, the storytelling began. In the beginning the artist explained that the story was the Indian version of a Halloween story. When he told the story it was in a different language so it was hard to follow, and everyone else was focused on the story. People were nodded their heads and laughed; I just sat there. I was completely lost in what was going on, and I did not enjoy myself. I just ate my food, and waited for the story to be over.
Songs create a world of learning for children. It is hard to keep the interest of them while teaching them the song's meaning at the same time if the song doesn't have a nice melody. In this case, this specific song, does have a wonderful melody and words that are interesting too. Those are the types of kids songs that children appear to enjoy more than other songs. As soon as the song starts, they will start using their memories to try to remember everything about the music. The more you play the song, the more the child will learn. After a while, you can wait to see if the child still remembers what was taught in the song. It assists in teaching fundamentals of life. Kids are intelligent enough to remember.
