When we think of procrastination the first word that comes to most of our minds is lazy. Laziness and procrastination seem to go hand in hand and often procrastination is caused by us simply being lazy. However, procrastination is a chronic and constant problem for many of us and while some of us may also be chronically lazy as well, most of us aren’t. I am, unfortunately, a person that battles procrastination and I can say that laziness is usually not my problem. I believe that procrastination comes down to one thing; we simply do not want to do whatever it is we need to do. The reasons we feel the way we do can vary according to what we are avoiding and from person to person. Many of those of us attending school procrastinate over school work. It doesn’t matter if we are in college, elementary school, or high school, at some point most of us have procrastinated over one assignment or another. Sometimes we are just being lazy, we know how to do the work and we understand the assignment, but we would rather watch TV. On the other hand, some us procrastinate because we don’t understand the assignment and are too afraid to ask for help. In other cases, we may understand the assignment, but can’t seem to concentrate on it; so we put it off. Many of us have put off an assignment for all of these reasons at some point. If we were smart we would ask for help, put off watching TV, or figure out why we are having trouble concentrating, but most of us don’t. Another reason I often

So, you might be asking, how do I know if I’m a procrastinator or not? Well, this brings me to my second point, symptoms of procrastination. One of the worst aspects of procrastination is postponement. When one is postponing an important task, it becomes very difficult to enjoy recreational activities. One is socializing with friends or watching a film, and there is this nagging thought, "I should be working." A dark cloud of guilt hangs over your head and dampens any pleasure you might be extracting from the distractions of the moment. So, by not getting things done in a reasonably and timely manner, or not done at all, precious opportunities have been lost.
Procrastination is ignoring your responsibilities and avoiding them for no good reason. Experiencing procrastination can have a positive or negative reaction according to the amount of the behavior. The person that is procrastinating must first realize that they have a problem in order to find ways to overcome procrastination because they are putting their health, family and job at risk. Twenty percent of people realize they are procrastinators which in the end becomes a lifestyle. There are various reasons why people procrastinate.
Attention Getter: A famous author by the name of Wayne Dyer once said, “Procrastination is one of the most common and deadliest of diseases and its toll on success and happiness is incredibly heavy.”(1) In todays society it seems as if procrastination has become a normal and acceptable thing to do. It is often joked about amongst schoolmates and co-workers around the world. Nothing seems to get done until it absolutely needs to get done, then everyone runs around getting things done quickly and often times inaccurately. The trouble with this mentality however is that some things will never get done because something will come up tomorrow or the next day and what you are putting off now gets pushed even further back. The problem of procrastination starts when a student waits until minutes before a class to study for a class. This may seem like a solution for students who are pressed for time; however, this doesn’t allow time for the information to be solidified and vital information can be lost. These behaviors form because students have found that in the past they were able to successfully pass the class by doing their homework literally hours before the projects deadline. This reckless learning may help pass the class, but doesn’t give the information the time needed to be solidified into memory. While attending high school or college, you find there are other things in your life to do. When there are other things for you to attend, it can often make you not do what is most important. If you do not complete the important things first, then you are procrastinating. It is often easy to procrastinate. You may think you will find the time to get it done before the due date because you just do not feel like doing the project at the time. Tough it out and push through it because if you do not complete it, then you are more than likely going to run out of time and be doing the project at the last-minute. If you do not procrastinate then it allows you time to work on the project and it could allow you to make a better grade. Do not let procrastination, take over your life.

According to Semb, Glick and Spencer (1979), the level of procrastination increases as an individual stays longer in universities. It was stated by Ellis and Knaus (1977) that approximately, over 70% of college students engage in this activity. Undergraduates tend to start papers during the last minute; they fail to prioritize what should be accomplished first, and as a result, their academic performance is greatly affected. A detrimental effect on their studies leads to having poor grades and eventually, failure in class (Semb, et.al., 1979).

Procrastination could also be pure laziness and the in-ability to stay focus on the task at hand. Excuses like “I am too tired” “ill finish it later”. Laziness can play a huge role in a procrastinator’s life. Pushing the task further and further off into the distance. Some college students will even go as far as to asking themselves will this assignment effect my grade. Having so many thoughts in their mind they can’t seem to focus. After siting in one spot trying over and over again they give up. Then trying to figure out what’s more important the biggest party in Tallahassee or their school work.

There are some things in this world that people tend to put off talking about for numerous reasons, whether it be because it brings them pain or they just don’t want to. One of those things that people don’t really talk about, as ironic as it sounds, is procrastination. There are numerous reasons why people procrastinate, but the real question is: is procrastination natural? In my opinion, yes it is. We all do it at some point in our lives despite how organized we are. This is true even according to professionals. Bill Knaus, a doctor of education and writer for Psychology Today who wrote “Why You Procrastinate and What to do About it,” explains how procrastination comes naturally, “You may think that tomorrow will take care of itself, and so delay is okay,” (Knaus, 2010). This is not to say that we all procrastinate on a regular basis, but rather we all do it at one point, intentional or unintentional. Sometimes it is a very little piece of procrastination, something you wouldn’t have originally considered to be procrastination. For instance, putting off telling someone you have a crush on them. Sure this may not seem like a form of procrastination, but in reality, it is. Putting off anything is considered procrastination, even not telling someone you have a crush on them.
