I believe the producers within “John Steinbeck and the America Experience” well incorporated the historical events and people in John Steinbeck’s life and novels in the film. The video was well presented, organized and showed significant places that took place in his life and novels. The producers were insightful and portrayed an accurate perception on John Steinbeck’s life.
Some facts that I knew about Steinbeck before watching this video, was that he was a loner and had a hard time beginning his career as a writer. Facts that I discovered about Steinbeck were that he was a journalist during the Great Depression and sold over 14 million copies of Grapes of Wrath.

Everyone has a life history, John Steinbeck also has a history of his own. His life story began on February 27, 1902, in the farming town known as Salinas from California (Schillinglaw). He had four siblings, but he was the only boy in the four. Olive Hamilton Steinbeck was his mother and she was a former teacher in that time period. The town where he grew up at, was a farming town and still a farming town, it has rich green fields and surrounded by landscapes of broad yellow valleys. He and his family had lived a comfortable life as a middle class family during his childhood (Shmoop). When Steinbeck was done with high school, he worked for many places and different kinds of jobs which were a laborer for a sugar factory in Salinas, a laborer in mills, and a ranch hand (Reuben) .John Steinbeck went to Stanford University and majored his English there, but he had never receive any degree (Reuben). He often includes social and political propaganda that is popular, in his writing. He wants his readers to know society for what it really is. “Ideas are like rabbits. You get a couple and learn how to handle them, and pretty soon you have a dozen.”(Steinbeck) Steinbeck uses things in society to write a book that has a deeper meaning to it, to really understand the characters and their feelings one must first understand what a story really portrays. Steinbeck uses these topics to relate to society which helps them grasp not only the story but what is going on in the world around them. The author is able to make a good book that is interesting and appeals to the reader solely because of the atmosphere and real meaning of the story whether it be fiction or nonfiction. In the early 1900’s many things occurred that changed America permanently, whether it be the great depression or the dust bowl all of these events affected everyone and everything living in the US. John Steinbeck wrote about what surrounded him. At the time he was writing, the nineteen-thirties, a great depression was plaguing the United States. Many people were out of work. Many farmers were losing their farms and homes. An extreme drought had also wrecked the farms of the Midwest and made them into what is now referred to as the "dust bowl". It was a terrible time to be poor, and most were. People died of malnutrition every day. In California, where Steinbeck resided, migrant workers dominated the workforce. The American voice is what Americans have to say that helps contribute to worldly matters. It is unique because it changes everyday with new events happening and people adding more to the American voice. John Steinbeck was a big contributor to the American voice in the 30’s and 40’s during the Great Depression era. He grew up in a hardworking family, his mother a schoolteacher and his father moved from job to job trying to keep food on the table. He worked as a war correspondent during World War II and also worked as a caretaker for the elderly. His background helped shape who he was, and ultimately helped his work because he could relate to people.
