Bus Stop
By William Inge
Directed by David Schweizer
Bus Stop written by the playwright William Inge was performed on Tuesday December 4th at Centerstage, the State Theatre of Maryland. The production explained the transformation and change of the characters throughout the show. Directed by David Schweizer, all the elements of the production came together to form the concept of transformation. The production of Bus Stop grasps the relevance of individuals finding themselves. Not only does the physically abusive cowboy find himself, but the young café waitress finds herself through the fragility of the human heart that lies deep within the characters. These characters continue living and moving forward in their feisty, courageous

Costume designer, Clint Ramos tied the actors to their characters simply by how they were robed. Bo and Virgil’s costumes showed us that they were cowboys as soon as they stepped foot on the stage, along with Grace and Elma’s pink dresses and white aprons as they worked in the café the whole production. Overall, the message shared from the production of Bus Stop set the transformation of characters against reality. Directed by David Schweizer and written by the playwright, William Inge, this production really hits home on how people are and end up after change and transformation. The elements of the production really help enhance the actor’s performances and move the play along together as a
On November 18, 2017, I saw the Richland College Theatre Department’s production of RIDE by Eric Lane. In this essay, I will express what we’re the exceptional things that I saw. Also, I will use terms from what I learned from class, to explain some factors that I interpreted from the play.
At the Kearsarge 2018 Regional Theatre Festival, Oyster River High School gave a performance of Peter Tarsi’s Tracks. The play, depicting multiple characters navigating the afterlife, uses its production elements effectively throughout to help convey the story. As a whole, the actors’ performances help to define their characters, who are often portrayed as modern archetypes. But despite all this, the play falls victim to the inconsistencies and often plodding nature of the script. Ultimately, the poor story structure stops the entire production in its tracks.
Tennessee William’s A Streetcar Named Desire is a play that tells the tale of a family in 1940’s New Orleans. It examines the issues of delusion, escapism, the pitfalls of desire, and the idea that people are reluctant to see the truth when it deviates from what their ‘perception’ or what they want from the world. This is all done from a variety of critical lenses. The aforementioned ‘critical lens’ is mostly simply defined as a specific way of looking at a text, by keeping certain questions and ideas in mind. This is important, as it allows the reader to understand a work beyond a mere two dimensional point of view- by analysis on another layer, with certain key factors in mind, a reader is able to further understand the work and the ‘subconscious meaning’ behind the choices of the author. While A Streetcar Named Desire is a novel about the chains of our own making, the reader’s experience and
Michael Hoffman’s 1999 film version of Shakespeare's midsummer night’s dream was able to modify the audience experience of the play. Michael Hoffman had successfully turned the play into a film and was able to show a visible expression of the characters to the audience. He had also made some changes, like the settings and made his version modernized. Though the film was based on the Shakespeare’s play, the audience’s experience is still different.
The considerable characters of A Streetcar remain relatively indistinguishable in both versions of the work. The play and film versions of the characters were an exact match. The seamlessness allowing the stars, who acted as these characters, to act in both play and film
In the Petrol Station scene, William Shakespeare’s important theme of violence is amplified and discussed through Baz Luhrmann’s filmic interpretation. The theme of conflict between the Montagues and the Capulets is a constant and crucial idea throughout the play. Baz Luhrmann has highlighted the traditional Shakespearean language by modifying the setting to a modern context, therefore the audience is able to relate to the text. Furthermore, the setting choice of a petrol station provides the film with the ability to effectively enhance the dramatic language revealed in the play. Irony and contrast are also really essential in drawing the audience’s attention to the violence in Romeo and Juliet. Tybalt states, “What, drawn, and talk of
The stage directions reveals “The Theatre. The performance is over.Lewis, tired and sweaty but pleased is talking to Justin who shakes his hand”. Following this, Justin's repetition in “marvellous. Just marvellous” proves that Lewis’ work with the mental patients was successful. His ability to gain friendships and develop a deeper understanding of the patients, suggests his growth and transformation was a success expanded as lewis’ sense of identity strengthened as he grew closer to the patients. This is further proven as roy addresses the audience “Next year, a greater triumph awaits us, Jerry. The Don!”. Roy happiness at the end of the play cements the idea of Lewis’ transformation by demonstrating how much Lewis has impacted on the patients, giving them a border outlook on life and providing them with a sense of belonging to the world. When Lewis directly addresses the audience “Yes, Roy. There was no next year. The theatre mysteriously burnt down a week after the performance….. time to turn out the lights”.Thus breaking the fourth wall the illusion of the theatre is broken down. This highlighting to the audience the directors dramatic intent of the play Cosi which was to spark a change in social attitudes towards mental illness but not only that but to come to his own terms with contextual issues and experiences of the mental illness and

How Brecht achieves producing this state of consciousness is more subtle and elegant than the previous technique of having actors walk out with blatant placards to remind the audience that they are watching a play. One of the marks of Brecht’s epic theater is his alienation effect, or “a representation which allows [the audience] to recognize its subject, but at the same time makes it seem unfamiliar” (Brecht 1948, 8).
The play takes place after World War II, during the postwar booms. The era of the Baby boom, the growth of the suburbs, the tension of the cold war, and the civil rights movements. During this time, African Americans had an ongoing war with the dilemma of racial discrimination. In 1954, during the historical case of Brown v. Board of Education, the Supreme court decided that black children were free to attend any institution they desired, and as Afro-Americas families enrolled their children in all “white schools”, many used hostility and extortion to prevent any Afro- American from entering schools. In 1955, “Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give her seat on a city bus to a white person. Her arrest sparked a 13-month boycott of the city’s buses by its black citizens, which only ended when the bus companies stopped discriminating against African American passengers” (A+E Networks, 2010). Acts of hate against black citizens became a daily dilemma, from lynching them, to name calling, to hate crimes.

Typical, it is 7:31 am Monday morning and I am running late. Knowing it will take approximately twenty minutes for me to make it to 8:00 am lecture on time, I grab my book bag hastily lock my apartment door and fly down the slightly stained cement stairs. In less than sixty-seconds, I miraculously made it from the third to the first floor without falling. I congratulate myself and hop in my old reliable dusty gray, 2011 Toyota. At last, I arrive to campus just in time to park in the closest lot near the School of Nursing building making it to my first lecture of the day with ten minutes to spare. This seems like a small and normal morning routine for some, for others who do not have
