Progressive by term means something that is developing gradually in stages. However in terms of the historical meaning progressive have multiple kinds of meaning. Historically progressive fixed American society in general, example of this will be the Reconstructions, World War 1, the struggle for woman’s right, the Civil Right Movement and child labor. Progressive also refer to a grate response and improvement in the social and economic problems. For years now child’s labor has decrease rapidly, compare to before. Everyone can agree life has it’s wonderful and egregious moments. Some people have a grand life with insufficient negativity. Others people have a miserable life and non imposing. In the late 1800’s and beginning to mid 1900’s, child labor caused several children to have an inimical life rather than a preeminent life. When people read what these children had gone through, they fail to remember to put themselves in the children’s situation; therefore, they don’t understand, nor cease how horrendous life was for the children. Numerous factual documents state how deplorable life was for the children during this era. Furthermore, these documents include the Union-made Cigars, Finding of the Commission, the Law of 1913, the letter from WPA Teacher Union to Governor Lehman, and lastly a telegram from Mrs. of Nassau County to Governor Lehman. Schools today teach this time period to the students and share innumerable certainties of the children’s lives. Ultimately, children in this life span had an atrocious duration.

Peter Filene's article presents the idea that Progressivism was not a movement at all but more of a jumbled mess of similar ideas that occurred around the same period in history. Filene “seeks to prove that ‘the progressive movement’ never existed.” (Article 1, p. 20) He believed that there are too many discrepancies between the ideas of different historians and that if it were an actual movement that the definitions of the progressive movement/era would be consistent with each other. The only real agreement that Filene finds between the many differing opinions is the goals of the time period. He includes as the “standard list of progressive objectives… constraints on monopolies, trusts and big banking interests; regulation of railroad rates; lower tariffs; the direct primary; initiative, referendum and recall; direct election of U.S. Senators; women’s suffrage; child- and female- labor laws; pure food and drug laws and conservation.” (Article 1, p. 21) Filene explains the discrepancies between the many historians’ views.
