This new addition of The Academic Support Center aimed to provide a sustainable and flexible space that responded to these different flows of pedestrian and vehicular traffic. The building has several exterior spaces designed for the circulation of such traffic. One of the processions begins at the parking lots located to the south and extends through the drop off zone and into the eastern entrance of the building. A covered path along the south wall leads to the west and into the main campus. This path gives pedestrians passing through a chance to be exposed to a sustainable building that is lined with a variety of native plants that work with the system. Another path starts at the parking to the north and leads into the plaza in front of …show more content…
The appearance of the ‘dry clock’ fluctuates during the different wet and dry seasons of South Florida. This gauges and demonstrates the volume of storm water that is harvested by the site per season. The water that is harvested is then used throughout the Academic Support Center to flush the toilets and urinals. To further the sustainability of the water management system, the project uses high performance plumbing that reduces the sites water consumption by 36% per year. Features like these are responsible for helping the building score so high in the water management category of the LEED Gold certification. Other systems were also implemented throughout the building to create a flexible and sustainable environment. The Academic Support Building uses a combination of L.E.D. lighting, daylight sensors, efficient HVAC systems, and occupancy sensors to achieve its low environmental impact. These technologies and other techniques helped reduce the cost of its annual energy consumption by 20%. The classrooms were made to be adaptable and flexible by the use of moveable partition walls supplied by the Hufcor Company. This system allows the building to change and adapt efficiently as different needs and programs arise in the future. This proactive approach of designing the building with its’ potential future needs in mind will greatly reduce its long term operational cost and environmental impact. The Academic Support Center not only uses specialized systems and
We decided to build a multi-story parking lot around the SAIT campus as there is less parking space for the students and it takes very long in the morning to find a parking space. So, the purpose of this project is to provide an idea to SAIT for building another parking lot for convenience of students. In order to do that we are going to perform Phase 1 and Phase 2.
Despite the existing sustainable initiatives mentioned above, Camp Young Judaea Texas continues to create a significant amount of waste during the summer and year round retreat sessions. Energy, water, food, and recyclable materials are only a few examples of the assorted waste produced in a camp environment. Therefore, our camp is committed to becoming a model for water sustainability and environmental conservation. Over the course of the next five years, CYJ plans to build and showcase clean and sustainable infrastructures that are being produced worldwide. Our camp facilities and education programs will incorporate the use of technologies; such as solar paneling, biogas, drip irrigation, rainwater collection cisterns, and digitally-monitored water and electricity metering, alongside other tools currently revolutionizing modern sustainable practices.
Human Development is the reason why Florida has water-supply problems. In the nineteenth century, the Everglades submerged more than half of Florida’s 36 million acres in clean, fresh water (43). Our water supply problems commenced when the SFWMD and the Army Corps of Engineers began draining and paving over the everglades in the early twentieth century. With concrete covering the ground, the 150 billion gallons of rainfall received has since been unable to filter down into the ground and replenish the aquifer. Instead that rainfall becomes run-off. The run-off does not return into natural watersheds,
Southeastern Oklahoma State University offers many student support services that can help make the college experience less stressful. Each service has its own way of aiding the student in whatever way they need assistance. In this essay I will explain four of these services and how they can help the student. These include the Writing Center, Financial Aid Office, Advising Center, and the Student Health Service.
West Chester University’s ongoing attempts to meet the needs of the student body’s various demographics are commendable, but some areas and services should be granted priority due to their more numerous natures’ and relatively minimal cost. Some of the ones being readily addressed are the constraints of and accessibility to various academic buildings on West Chester’s campus. These include but are not limited to:
Being environmentally friendly isn’t merely a trend. After thousands of years of using the earth’s resources, we have finally come to realize that we are destroying this beautiful gift we were honored with. Architects play an influential role in trying to preserve this gift by encouraging a multitude of strategies that can be more cost efficient in the long run, be more comfortable for its users, and most importantly, have a lower carbon footprint. Strategies can include drastic changes to heat and air systems, construction material selections, or even specific design details to the architecture of a building that would reduce the amount of energy it consumes.
On January 12, 1965, during his education message to Congress, President Lyndon B. Johnson conveyed that in order to strengthen our country, we needed to provide more higher education opportunities for lower and middle income families, and on November 8, 1965, the Higher Education Act became law.
The SUNY Rockland Community College Technology Building is a large, square building with high picture walls. It is one of the first buildings a visitor is likely to encounter upon arriving at the campus, given that it houses the administrative functions of the college, along with several academic departments. The multifaceted nature of the building is exemplified in its large size and generic appearance. Were the building uniquely stylized and adorned to indicate that it houses for example the nursing department, this might detract from the other functions the building serves for members of the college community. The form of the building is both imposing yet relatively nondescript, and can be 'all things to all people.' It is also highly visible from all over the campus. This is not an unimportant feature of a main 'portal'-style building that is designed to welcome students and visitors alike to SUNY-Rockland. If someone was lost or uncertain about how to proceed through the campus, it would be very easy to find this building to seek assistance. Virtually every student must make his or her way through the Technology Building, during his or her tenure on the campus.
The Student Success Center is a student employed tutorial service hosted by Arapahoe Community College. It was founded in an effort to improve student learning in the college. Initially called the Learning Strategy Center, then dubbed Tutorial Services, and now the Student Success Center, the goal has always been the same: support student learning.
This week’s assignment was to explore Northcentral Universities’ (NCU) Dissertation and Academic Success Centers. Previous to this week I had already been into the Academic Success Center to assist in my assignments prior to submitting them. I had not previously been in the Dissertation Center, as a matter of fact, I did not know of it until this assignment.
The mission of the Academic Success Center is to foster academic and personal development and success by providing a cohesive set of support services for students to assist them in achieving their educational goals.
It is very important, as teachers, that we guide, correct, and encourage our students to behave correctly in the classroom. In, The Iris Center for Faculty Enhancement, level C, case 1, there are two students, Zach and Patrick, who continue to disrupt the class because of their behavior towards each other. Zach is a relatively quiet student with a learning disability, yet he enjoys his school work. Patrick is the louder of the two students who likes to talk. He is very outgoing and likes to be the center of attention. Their teacher is starting to get frustrated with the behavior between the two boys. Patrick teases Zach regularly, along with other students; then Zack responds in an inappropriate manner. Zack gets angry and yells back; and sometimes he even breaks down to tears. Therefore, with using some of the helpful ideas from the STAR (Strategies And Resources) Sheet, the teacher will be able to encourage appropriate behavior in
Finally, the investment of this project will have great social impacts on students in Ryerson. The Architecture building typically closes at 7:30 PM. To save electricity, Ryerson turns off the lights. This stages as a problem for commuter students who stay at school in the night to take advantage of its facilities. By introducing free and renewable solar energy to the ARC, students will have more time to study at school. As result, their academic performance will improve. Also, the money saved yearly from solar panels can be put towards increasing Ryerson’s facilities. For example, the lighting around Quad at night, and the number of vending machines in Kerr Hall can be improved. About 130 students make Kerr Hall their home during exams. There
In response to a University of Florida Request for Proposal, the TechCorp company has formed a research team to investigate water usage on the University of Florida campus. The University of Florida occupies a unique role as a leader in sustainability and ecological awareness in the region, and in keeping with this role, emphasizes efficient water usage. However, this team’s research has shown that not only are university water supplies outdated and inefficient, but they are also unsatisfactory to students and faculty. This team has proposed a series of solutions designed to repair and replace damaged structures with highly efficient equipment and materials, and has scheduled maintenance plans for bathrooms, landscapes areas, pools, lecture halls
