The purpose of my paper is to promote the effects of drinking and driving. To research my information, I used internet sources. In 1910, New York was the first state to pass a law against drinking and driving, along with California and other states soon taking after. However, there was so set standards of what level of blood alcohol concentration (BAC) qualified as drunk driving. In 1936, Dr. Rolla Harger, a professor of toxicology and biochemistry, licensed the Drunkometer. This balloon like device, which people breathed in to, determined whether or not someone was drinking. In 1938, the research done by the American Medical Association and the National Safety Council, set 0.15 percent as the legal limit for (BAC). In 1953, Robert Borkenstein,
Imagine this. It’s the weekend, you have nothing planned but to just sit at home and watch T.V. Your sister gets invited to a party but her friend invited her to spend the night, your parents don’t really like the party idea at all but allows her to go stay the night at her friends instead. Your sister goes to the party instead. Just imagine waking up in the middle of the night to your parents crying, hearing your mom cry and yell. You run downstairs and find out that your sister has been in a car accident and was also drinking and driving. Your sister, who was only eighteen is pronounced dead. She had her whole life ahead of her, but it's ruined all because she went to the party, got drunk, and decided it was okay to drive. How would you
Drunk driving is an issue that effects many people across our nation. People do not realize the affects alcohol can have on the body and mind that slow decision making while driving. This issue begins in the home. Children see their parents, or other adults figures, have a beer or a cocktail and get in the car. Thus, making it seem like it is acceptable to drink and drive. “One in three people will be involved in an alcohol-related crash in their lifetime” (MADD).
The facts are plain and simple, that alcohol and driving do not mix. About three in every ten Americans will be involved in an alcohol related crash at some time in their lives. Every single injury and death caused by drunk driving is totally preventable. To curb this national travesty, concerned Americans need to examine the problems, the effects, and the solutions to drunk driving. First of all, America has had a problem with drunk driving since Ford perfected the assembly line. Alcoholism is a problem in and of itself, but combined with driving can have a wide range of effects. The consequences of this reckless behavior can include a first time DUI or licenses suspension; a small fender bender, or worst of all a deadly crash. Most
“In the hands of an impaired driver, a vehicle becomes a murderous weapon.” ( ) Everyone can think of someone who has driven impaired, or even maybe you have done it yourself. The fact that one can think of someone who has driven impaired is a problem. Too many people are getting behind the wheel after drinking, smoking; or are not paying attention while they drive. Impaired driving continues to a problem although strides have been made to make a difference. There are many different types of impaired driving, each that have their own consequences. These types, and consequences will be explored in this essay.
Although there are many commercials, ads, documentaries, seminars, etc. on the reasons why people should never drink and drive, you would be surprised how many people still get behind the wheel after having had more than just a drink or two. We might not realize it but every day, about 28 people in the United States die in car crashes that involve a drunk driver. This equals to one death every 51 minutes! It’s so sad because these statistics could be way better if people had a well thought out plan prior to going out drinking. There has been research found relating to Drinking and Driving Behaviors since this topic is now becoming more of an issue in this generation than it was in the past. For instance, Schell, Chan, and Morral (2006), found that some people who have a DUI record tend to have pretty high expectations of themselves even after having some drinks in their system (e.g., “I feel more relaxed when drinking"), so with that being said those people with higher confidence were the ones more likely to be engaged in drinking and driving activity. While intoxicated, we often don’t consider any negative consequences that can happen to us but as you’ll see on the news, on social media, in the newspapers, etc. driving while under the influence can be very dangerous and even fatal.
Each year numerous lives are lost due to careless and irrational driving. The disregard for safe driving has been a predicament to the United States of America for years. Many years Police have relied heavily on speed cameras, breathalyzer tests and heavy fines as a deterrent against unlawful drivers. Over the years fatality rates have increased, so the Department of Transportation and Highway Safety has composed a series of safe driving campaigns. On many occasions the Transportation Department informs and advises the public about the importance of responsible driving. They propagate safe driving through the various channels of the media and
Russman Law states that in 1910 the first DUI law was adopted by New York. California was next, and soon, many other states followed. These laws only forbid driving while intoxicated. There was no level of inebriation that qualified as drunk driving. Robert Borkenstein invented the Breathalyzer in 1953. The breathalyzer is a machine that determines the level of alcohol in a person’s blood by measuring alcohol vapors in their breath. It wasn’t until 1972 when states began to pass DUI laws which had to prove that the person’s blood alcohol concentration was over the legal limit (Russman, 2013). Idaho Code §18-8004 was adopted in 1984. This code states that it is illegal to drive or be in physical control of a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs, alcohol or any other intoxicating substances, or a combination of both in the state of Idaho (Idaho Legislature, 2017). Effects from alcohol can start occurring at a blood alcohol concentration of 0.02 percent.
2.Thesis: This is very important because people die every day from this issue, there is a logical prevention, and just one person can make a huge difference. I want to talk to you about how big of a problem this actually is and how we can fix it. I am also going to tell you a story about a young lady whose life was affected dramatically by a drunk driver.
The organization, I chose for this paper is Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). I chose this organization because I feel a strong connection to their core message and that message is; “To end drunk driving, help fight drugged driving, support the victims of these violent crimes, and prevent underage drinking” (MADD, 2016). Mothers Against Drunk Driving sends a clear message about the negative effects a drunk driving, drugged driving, and underage drinking. Their website is filled with support hotlines, addresses to your local MADD office and an entire area on the homepage of the website is dedicated for people to donate money to support the victims’ families of these horrible accidents. Also, if you go past just the first page of the website a viewer of the organizations
Drunk driving is an epidemic that continues to have severe and life threatening consequences for those involved, if we simply take a few steps against drunk driving we can help decrease this epidemic.
A fun night out may start out with a few drinks with friends. The mood is lifted and everyone is having a great time, then the night itself reaches an ending point. Everyone wants to have a safe drive home, but whose car is really safe to be in? This topic has a affected my life personally from experiencing loss of friends that were drinking and driving. In 2010, ABRAMET released a series of ad campaigns in the United States, in order to spread awareness of the dangers drinking and driving.
Yesterday, I shouldn’t have drunk too much, if I was driving. Maybe if I were more careful, Andy would still be alive. The sight was terrifying, the car was burnin up and Andys screams… It’s all my fault. Everyone was mourning, but it would have to be like this if I had payed attention, if I was careful… Andy would still be alive. My school says I should see a therapist but should i? I don’t really
The guilt from causing the injury or death of a loved one can be dreadful. Sometimes unbearable and can even lead to suicide. Drinking while driving or driving under the influence of alcohol, or a DUI, is sadly a very common occurrence in our society. In South Africa 58% of road deaths are directly linked to alcohol consumption. More than anywhere else in the world. When going out with friends, especially when the outing will likely involve alcohol, assign a friend who will stay sober and drive any drunk friends home. Install an app like Uber Services so that you can request an Uber to drive you home. Alternatively, make sure you have the number of a cab company on your phone. If you see a friend who is planning on driving home and you know
Me and my family are very close we see eachother everyday and my grandma or mom, of tia (aunt) will cook dinner so we went to my uncle's house and we got done eating and we were just talking and we got a call. My cousin britanya was gonna go out with her friends one night and we got a call from the police saying she had passed away from a car accident, she was drinking and driving it was very devastating to know that that is how she died she ran into a pole and it crushed her from the inside out, it was a very a very hard loss for the family. Losing her was a big eye opener because many people die, from drinking and driving. You never know how it feels when somebody loses somebody that way, but when it happens to your family nobody should
