Contractors are expected to develop and enforce Drug and Alcohol Policies and Practices (D&A program) that are consistent with the Contractor R Us Drug and Alcohol Policy. Workers will be trained on the requirements and expectations of our D&A Policy. The COAA/Canadian Model best practice guideline has been adopted as standard requirements for Projects. Contractors will establish, implement and maintain a D&A Program to manage worksite impairment, compliance with applicable laws and Contractor R Us requirements. According to the COAA Alcohol and Drug Guidelines and Work Rule the following Drug and Alcohol work rule has been adopted: An employee shall not: a) use, possess or offer for sale alcohol and drugs or any product or device that may be used to attempt to tamper with any sample for a drug and alcohol test while on company property or at a company workplace, b) report to work or work i. with an alcohol level equal to or in excess of 0.040 grams per 210 litres of breath, ii. with a drug level for the drugs set out by the COAA Alcohol and Drug guidelines. iii. while unfit for work or account of the use of a prescription or non-prescription drug. c) refuse to i. comply with a request made by a representative of the company under 4.3 of the COAA Alcohol and Drug guidelines, or

Hospital nursing professionals are faced with many stressful situations in the workplace and at home. Some nurses try to cope with stress by turning to alcohol. In my professional opinion, alcohol should never be used as a coping mechanism. Eventually one or two alcoholics drinks a week turn into daily excessive and uncontrollable use. Impairment at work leads to an inability to critically think and make safe decisions. Alcohol impairment slows reaction time and alters judgement (CDC, 2016). These symptoms lead to a dangerous environment for the patient, other staff members and anyone having contact with the intoxicated nurse (CDC, 2016).
