Pros And Cons Of Abortion

Abortion is one of those heavy topics that either side can be right or wrong. Abortion mostly gets divided into two sides; Pro-Life or Pro-choice. On the side of Pro- life a person believes that the government has an obligation to preserve all human life, regardless of intent, viability, or quality of life concerns. On the side pro-choice a person believes that individuals have unlimited autonomy with respect to their own reproductive systems as long as they do not breach the autonomy of others. (Head)

There are two main political parties you can choose from in the United States, The Democrats and the Republicans. There are also third parties you can choose from. People can choose to be part of any party. We are divided by the left and right side on the political spectrum. The right are more conservative and the left are more liberal. These two political parties show philosophical differences through their viewpoints on major topics. With so many differences between the parties, finding topics or issues upon which constituents agree on can be difficult.

Abortion is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks (Abortion). Abortion is a controversial topic because one group of people would say it is killing a human (Abortion ProCon.org). On the other hand, the other group of people would say that the fetus is not developed enough to call it a human. This is an issue because it goes against morals that people have been been raised up on. It even goes against religion in which it defies the word of God. The other group says it’s a fundamental right guaranteed by the Constitution (Abortion ProCon.org).

Since 1973 when abortion was legalized over 56 million unborn children have been killed, which is about 155 babies per hour. (Abortionno.org, 2015) That number is about 19,000 times higher than the lives lost at 9/11. Abortions cause more death than a terrorist attack. Abortions cause many risks including medical and emotional complications, and a higher risk for certain issues later (i.e. breast cancer, placenta previa, ectopic pregnancy). I chose abortion as the topic of my research paper because it is a very important and controversial subject, and although I have always leaned heavily toward pro-choice, I really hadn't done much reading about it and wanted to support my position.

Abortion has been a huge issue for many years, not only in the United States but worldwide. It makes up for more than 70,000 maternal deaths (Terzo). Women who define abortion as a procedure that simply rids a woman’s body of a glob of cells, do not understand the truth: the so-called glob of cells has a heartbeat, nervous system, and brain, and can feel pain. Therefore, the procedure of abortion is nothing less than murder.

Since the creation of abortion it has been used widespread but it has caused some controversy between groups with different views of this topic. I decided to write about this issue because it has been more on the news lately and it’s very controversial, and it should be talked about not only in the news but with family members as well. Therefore we shall be concerned with the amounts of pleasure and pain in situations where abortion is permitted as contrasted with the amounts of pleasure and pain where abortion is forbidden.

Abortion is a very sensitive issue. Many people are constantly debating whether or not abortion should be allowed or not. Some people think abortion is very bad and that it should not be allowed at all. They think abortion is like committing murder as it is killing the human fetus. Others feel that the parents should have the right to choose and it is not murder until the baby is born. People who think it is bad say that the fetus is something alive, a human being who is partly formed and to do abortion is to kill it and commit murder. The people who think it is ok say that it is not murder until and unless the child is born. I think that abortion has to be seen about which stage the fetus is in. If it is in the very early stage, then it is not murder. But if it has already developed into a larger fetus, it can be considered as murder.

In an abortion the disregard for God’s creation, both infant and mother, is contrary to God’s role for mankind in the world order. Through it humanity attempts to become the divine by assuming the choice to terminate a human life. As we read in Genesis 3: 17 God punishes that kind of arrogance; likewise humanity can expect to be judged for its arrogance. The act of abortion does not spare the subject from God’s original punishment; on the contrary the procedure amplifies the female body’s pain as the child is killed, mutilated and finally extracted from the womb. The pain associated with this amoral act provides a foretaste of the pain endured in hell by the unrepentant.

The case Wade vs Roe, was a really important case, which legalized abortion. On January 22, 1973 the Supreme Court recognized the constitutional right to a woman's right to have an abortion. This case changed the way abortion was handled up to then. It stated that "Abortion should be permitted to women, for any reason, until the moment in which the fetus becomes viable, and is potentially able to live outside the womb, without artificial support. A women's right to her privacy was established as her constitutional right." (Roe vs Wade 1972)

According to Mother Teresa, “Saying that there are too many children is like saying there are too many flowers” (“The All-Time Greatest Pro-Life Quotes”). In this paper, both sides of the abortion argument will be viewed and supported with multiple facts. Abortion is when a pregnancy is purposely terminated. There are two sides to the issue being either Pro-life or Pro-choice. Pro-life is the side believing abortion is wrong and shouldn’t be legal. Pro-choice is the latter. Abortions shouldn’t be performed based on the abortion procedures and the reasons they are being done.

From the past to the present, society has passed judgment on people who are either considering the option of abortion or have had an abortion. Abortion is certainly not a conversation to discuss at the company potluck because it is a sensitive topic that most women all over the world are afraid to speak about. Women may choose to have an abortion for numerous reasons such as sexual assault, age, financial circumstances, environment, and health related reasons. When this controversial topic is being discussed, I always think about what I would do. If I happened to be under different circumstances would I make that choice? These questions are the reason why I believe that abortion should remain legal.
