Europe, the world’s largest cosmetic market, Israel, and India have already banned animal testing for cosmetics, and the sale or import of newly animal-tested beauty products. Major companies have turned their backs completely on animal testing and no longer use ingredients that were tested on animals – and a number of animal tests have been completely replaced with superior, cheaper and more effective non-animal methods. Proponents of animal testing say that it has enabled the development of many life-saving treatments for both humans and animals, that there is no alternative method for researching a complete living organism, and that strict regulations prevent the mistreatment of animals in laboratories. Opponents of animal testing say …show more content…
Dozens of diseases, from cancer to epilepsy, affect both animals and humans. Vaccines that treat humans also benefit animals. Through techniques like artificial insemination and embryo transfer, species that are endangered or have disappeared in the wild can now be managed or maintained. Research on the sexual behavior of animals has made it possible to breed many species in captivity, enabling endangered species to be reintroduced to the wild (How Do Animals Benefit from Animal Research). If vaccines were not tested on animals, millions of animals would have died from rabies, distemper, feline leukemia, infectious hepatitis virus, tetanus, anthrax, and canine parvovirus. The Animal Welfare Act protects certain animals from inhumane treatment and neglect. Congress passed the law in 1966, after legislators learned the story of a pet Dalmatian named Pepper who was taken from its family 's backyard in 1965 and sold to a dog dealer. The Animal Welfare Information Center was established to provide researchers with a database of alternatives to painful animal experiments and each research facility in the United States using protected species must register with the USDA and establish an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) to review all experimental protocols involving live, warm-blooded animals (Regulation of Animal Research). Animals are used under
The majority of people believe animal testing is dreadfully wrong. As animal testing becomes a popular conversation argument, the main altercation is how unjust and crooked it is. Companies especially those in the makeup industry, have gained popularity and admiration for wiping out animals testing for their products even though the products have actually been tested before put out on the market. Animal testing is now grasped as an abhorrent business, but what others do not realize is that without animal testing, the medical world and other productions would not be as advanced as it is today. Even though it seems as though the cons outweigh the pros, there is definitely a balance between them. Animal testing can save human lives and the medications tested on animals can also become a medication for animals if it works; however, some animals contract diseases easier than humans and can suffer because of this testing.
Cosmetics tested on animals sometimes are affected for humans and sometime not affected for humans. 9 out of 10 drug experimental fail in clinical studies. Most of the test are not applicable for humans. “92% of experimental drugs that are safe and effective in animals fail in human clinical trials because they are too dangerous or don’t work”. “It is not surprising to find that treatments showing ‘promise’ in animals rarely work in humans. Not only are time, money and animals’ lives being wasted (with a huge amount of suffering), but effective treatments are being mistakenly discarded and harmful treatments are getting through”. Even though the experiments tested on animals fail some people still agree with animal testing
The use of animal testing to conduct research on medical and pharmaceutical products is a divisive and controversial subject. The main arguments against animal testing are the inhume conditions in which animals are kept, and the suffering inflicted upon test subjects (Van der Zee; July 18, 2013). Despite the ethical issues with animal testing, an equally compelling argument can be made about the need for this practice to minimize risks to human test subjects. Throughout the years, animal research has been essential to the development of ground breaking medical discoveries such as penicillin even if such discoveries came at the expense of millions of animals that may have suffered or died during or because of these experiments (Lobanovska & Pilla, 2017). This paper intends to establish that despite its drawbacks, animal testing is a necessary evil for the sake of scientific progress.
Around 100,000 to 200,000 animals are suffering and dying from makeup testing yearly OR In 2013, India abolished mandatory cosmetics testing on animals. There are places such as Israel, India and the European Union which have banned cosmetics testing on animals. On the other hand, there are countries like the United States and China that still allow makeup testing on animals. Many organizations and groups are trying to find alternatives to help end cosmetics testing on animals. There have been about 50 non-animal tests that have already been authorized. A wide variety of animals are tested on. Some of the more common animals that are tested on can include mice, rabbits, rats, and guinea pigs. Cosmetics testing on animals is a very
According to the National Institutes of Health, animal testing has been around since the days of philosopher Aristotle. According to ProCon.org, there are an estimated 26 million animals used for scientific and commercial testing in the U.S. alone. Animal testing has brought many good things to the medical world, such as the treatment various disease. Also, the animal is being tested by many cosmetics companies. On the other hand, organizations like PETA- People of Ethical Treatment of Animals have fought against the medical testing of animals. There are pros and cons that come with the usage of animals in the biomedical and cosmetic testing, and each side needs should be carefully examined before deciding one way or another.
Imagine an innocent little rabbit...who was taken to a dark lab... and had makeup viciously rubbed on their skin...burning like fire. Having their eyes clamped open with no way of freedom with irritating fluids rushing in the rabbit’s eyes blinding them. Why would people be okay with this tiny animal being tortured? Animal experimentation is wrong and cruel to animal species. Medical and cosmetic testing has been done for years and it has been a controversial issue for some time. Some people having been debating whether or not there should be animal testing for past years. As stated by Sally Driscoll and Laura Finley, animal experimentation has been used for beneficial research, but is not worth the lives and abuse of the animals. Sadly, the ProCon organization explains “how over 26 million animals are mistreated each year for both scientific and commercial purposes.” Continuing animal testing is like people smoking cigarettes. It is an issue that is just being ignored and has to be stopped. Animal testing should be banned because it cannot always be accurate, there are other options that can benefit research efficiently, and it can kill and torture animals.
Over one hundred million animals every year die from animal testing, in the medical and cosmetic fields alone (“Experiments on Animals: Overview”). Animal testing is as big of a problem today as it has been in the past. Most people do not agree with animal testing today but years ago it was one of the only ways of testing. It was considered, if not the only, effective and efficient ways of testing a product’s toxicity. To date, animal testing is not warranted because of the development of new technology and past discoveries. Many organizations and brands publicly oppose animal testing. The companies that stand against animal testing are broad and diverse, ranging from medical to cosmetic testing, advocating that at its core, this issue is
There are currently no strict laws that protect animals from testing. Every year millions of animals die for incomprehensible reasons. Animal testing has been a controversial problem in the United States as well as nationally. For centuries animals have been used as test subjects for medications and products used in daily life. They should not have to suffer in order to have decent medications and beauty products that mean no difference to them. Animal testing can be ended and replaced if this problem is recognized and addressed, companies are penalized, replacement subjects are found, and animal testing is made overall illegal.
In the United States alone, notably around 100 million animals die every year from lab testing, including the larger animals like dogs and cats, along with rodents. With animal testing being on the rise, it is called out for being an unethical form of science. There are scientists and pro animal rights activists constantly on the search to reduce the number of animals involved in animal testing. They are trying to find alternatives to help layout a better blueprint for the science world, even if some alternatives are more profound than others. However, with their search, there are different types of lab testing that are used in an attempt to make animal testing more humane, and trying to pass laws that limit the use of animals in testing,
Generally speaking, if you were to hear, “It's time for you to test a vaccine that may or may not be dangerous or even possibly fatal, for the sake of a different species.” It's understandable that the notion of this may make you feel uncomfortable. Nevertheless, this exact situation is what happens to animals across the world. One charged debate that has taken place for a long period, of time, is whether animal testing has a valid position, within, the field of health and medicine studies. There are two heavily opinionated sides within this conflict. There are those who feel Animal Testing is necessary for the future of medicine, then there are the people who believe that animal testing ( even though, perhaps once had a reasonable stand) no longer serves a purpose in health and medicine, believing animal testing to be ( for many people but not all) morally unacceptable and an outdated practice. Upon reflecting on the arguments brought before both sides of this debate, it can be concluded that animals should no longer be used to test on as it's ineffective and a waste of time.
This book was a really good source for two reasons. I used this source a lot in my paper not just quoting what the author said, but also using the case studies. The case studies helped me a lot because they usually worked as examples of abuse and neglect..The case studies helped me a out because, there was a lot of good ones that talked a lot about what exactly is happening in labs. They talk about a lot of stuff that people don't really know what's going on in the labs. This book also had a few really good quotes that I used. That is why this book was a really good source to use.
Around the world, there has been an enduring controversial issue and that is animal testing and research. Since the beginning of medicine, animals were used in the testing of drugs, vaccines, and medical devices to determine the safety of a product due to their similarities in diseases with humans. However this is considered unnecessary due to the creation of alternatives for animal testing. Despite these alternatives the majority of animal testing still has not come to halt. This issue deserves to be attentive to instead of turning a blind eye as we consumers have always done dragging the issue and understand how our products are developed. The audience for this topic is generally people who are consumers of products and UTA students. In
Animal research is regulated by the Animal Welfare Act(AWA). The Animal Welfare Act protects animals against mistreatment during experimentation and living in labs. The act protects against mistreatment of animals by enforcing the following rules: minimum housing standards for research animals (enclosure size, temperature, access to clean food and water, and others), all proposals to use animals for research must be approved by an institutional animal care and use committee set up by
Many of the products we use everyday are being tested on animals. Many don’t give a second thought to what is being done to these animals to produce these products. The animals that are being used for research are treated inhumanly and aren't given the proper care that they are suppose to be given by law. Many of the animal handlers take advantage of the fact that these animals can’t express how much pain that they are causing them when being used as test subjects or being kept in small cages. There are those that believe animals don’t have rights but little do they know that any living thing has as many rights as humans do. The Animal Welfare Act needs to be better implemented to combat animal cruelty because the current law is not being
Today laws regulating the use of animals in laboratory experiments protect animals. These laws include the Animal Welfare Act of 1966, the Endangered Species Act of 1973 and the FD&C Act (Animal Rights: Timeline). Technology combined with people’s concern for the welfare of animals has led to changes in how modern laboratories conduct research.
