Pros And Cons Of Animal Testing

While the pros to animal research are positives on humans, it is negatively affecting the animals themselves. Using animals for medical research is inhumane because they are left in these awful conditions. These animals are being mistreated in captivity because humans need them for their own research. The animals used in these experiments are treated very poorly because, they are subjected to force feeding, forced inhalation, deprived of food and water, excessive physical restraint, and may acquire infections and other wounds while in captivity (“Animal Testing”, 2017). Animals like these are burned, choked by CO2 and even left days without food or water. Sometimes we just test to see what the LD50 is for these animals, over 97,000 animals were killed just testing to find the LD50 from these animals. The LD50 is just a test to find out how much of one substance will kill 50% of the population. These animals are harmed for no reason because, most of the time it does not even help humans.

Within laboratory walls, the worst forms of institutionalized animal abuse is conducted. This abuse and torture is also known as animal testing and is primarily done with the expectation of find a cure to various illnesses. Scientists use this harsh research to gain control over behavior or biological systems. During the experiments helpless animals are exploited and endure great suffering. These conditions along with the feelings of the animals are unacknowledged in the name of medical research. The use of animals in medical research is essentially legal abuse. Animal testing for medical research should be made illegal because it is unethical, unreliable, and archaic.

Not to mention, many animals are unprotected by the law and forced against their will to undergo a horrid experience—“legal tests include burning, poisoning, mutilating…, and dissecting without painkillers”( “Animal Testing and the Law” ). Many animals are caged behind closed doors that the public cannot see because scientists who use these techniques do not want to upset the public; however, the law is not forcefully used to protect animals in a harmful environment. Furthermore, animals have no voice to establish a strong faith for their future; humans determine the fate and well-being of the animals. Animal Welfare Act, a Federal law that addresses the standard of care animals receive at research facilities, excludes about 95 percent of animals used in research and has low protection for the rest ( “ Animal Testing and the Law” ). Precious animals used in experimental research should be protected fully, if animals are going to be used, otherwise animal testing should be banned if the laws cannot fulfill their duty of protection because of the horrible experiments that may take place. “M.A. Fox

while there are many controversial thoughts on many different factors that apply to animal testing, I find it to be that many of the pros outweighs the costs that comes animal testing such as the ethical or moral reason. Although when including the ethical or moral consequences that comes with animal testing, the benefits to mankind and improvements to our societies and sciences in many diverse ways. Which leads me to strive towards the many benefits that comes with animal testing even with some of the consequences that comes with the testing. Many people will jump to the conclusion that animal testing is always done in a harsh manner, how the morals and ethics have been the same since way back when, and how the outcomes that occur when testing on animals isn’t worth the chance of them getting hurt. Yet this is not the case.

Animal testing has been the target of animal cruelty groups since the beginning of its existence, but the benefits it provides, humans and animals far greater than the type of method that is used to get the results. Scientists Karl Landsteiner’s success in finding a cure to polio is an example of how the benefits of animal testing helped better future human lives. In his experiments he discovered that Polio viruses had three variations, meaning that they would have to produce a product that could prevent all three. Also, they discovered that the virus enters the body through the mouth. With these to finding that the obtained through animal testing it was later possible to create a vaccine for polio that benefitted millions(Dilger).even

Many of the products we use everyday are being tested on animals. Many don’t give a second thought to what is being done to these animals to produce these products. The animals that are being used for research are treated inhumanly and aren't given the proper care that they are suppose to be given by law. Many of the animal handlers take advantage of the fact that these animals can’t express how much pain that they are causing them when being used as test subjects or being kept in small cages. There are those that believe animals don’t have rights but little do they know that any living thing has as many rights as humans do. Animals suffering in experimentation labs are in just and cruel to animals. It is wrong to harm an innocent animal of any wrong doing, when the animal doesn't know right from wrong. It is argued that people have an obligation to animals, so that we can protect their welfare.

The topic has ethical and moral aspects, as animals are genetically like us, thru can substitute for testing substances. In addition, in 1965 the local and state laws of the guideline in animal experiment were structured by the federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA) to instructing a strict minimum housing standard for the research animal including access to clean food and water, enclosure size, temperature and others. The AWA is closely inspected by the veterinarians. This article stated how animal testing does not help human health. The author stated that this is because there are major differences between animals and humans. PETA claims that animals are suffering and in pain while they are in the experiments. It also stated that many animals are not protected by the law. Another paragraph presented new information on how the public is funding animal experimentation and the lack of regulation from the government.

Today, millions of animals are being tested for human products, causing many to fall ill with disease and having no choice but to be experimented on. Animal Experimentation should be banned throughout the United States and other Countries. Animal Experimentation is a cruel and inhuman method of research, but would opponents prefer it is a necessary evil to experiment on animals?

Everyone has a different view of animals; many people see animals as companions and others see animals for advancing medical or experimental research. All around the world animals are being tested on with so called “new and improved” drugs and vaccines. One of the most common and wide known animals that are being tested on are rats and mice. More than 100 million mice and rats are killed every year in the U.S. due to animal testing. That means that in the time it took you to read these few short sentences about 45 mice were killed because they were tested on with some drug or vaccine. While testing drugs and vaccines may be convenient, efficient, and cheap, ultimately we are not considering the value of living things therefore mice and rats should not be allowed to be tested on and new laws should be put in place banning animal testing.

Every day people use products that have been tested on animals without even realizing it. This includes medication, beauty products, and even food. Despite it being a common method of research, there are many instances where it is not necessary to test on animals. Existing methods may be used to replace this cruel practice and can even produce more accurate results. Animal research is not always necessary to advance in science, nor determine product safety.

In 2017 alone, over one hundred animals died due to animal testing. 3.4 million of those animals were common household pets. If people go to jail for animal neglect and abuse, then why is animal testing permitted? This is a debatable topic because some people believe animal testing is acceptable for science and medicine. It is argued that animal testing is necessary for products even though pet possessed animals are victims tortured, causes human health issues from faulty results, and better alternatives have been show cased.
