In “The Pitfalls of Plastic Surgery,” by Camille Paglia, she argues that American surgeons are being too narrow minded with their work because they use the same models as a representation of what their clients can look like. She suggests that getting plastic surgery has become such a normal thing in America and that society pushes women to get work done in order to get that “perfect” look. Paglia also points out that plastic surgery has “leveled the playing field” with wives and their husbands mistresses (694). Also, she believes that plastic surgery is not only critical in keeping a job, but also in keeping a relationship. Although I agree with some of Paglia’s arguments, I view some of the issues differently such as, needing plastic surgery to keep a marriage, that plastic surgery is for non intellectuals, that Hollywood’s environment encourages women to change their looks, and that nothing good can come out of plastic surgery.

Although improving appearance through cosmetic surgery seems optimistic, risks and possible complications are associated with cosmetic surgery. Patients’ susceptibleness to these complications vary but are certainly issues that should be taken into consideration. Many patients don’t take into consideration the risks of cosmetic surgery.

Plastic surgery may create jobs and money for professionals in the business. Someone may go in and pay for an expensive surgery, but that pays for the surgeon, receptionist, cleaners, and technicians. Although maintaining a body or image that seems perfect it is not why someone should undergo surgery. People should decide to have surgery because of personal psychological issues, accidental maintenance and hereditary or birth defects, not to abuse the opportunity and become someone who they are not.

The character I chose was the plastic surgeon. I chose that one, because if I can’t go into the military, I’d like to work in the hospital business. The pros of choosing this character, was that they made a lot of money, so I could live a happy life, and I would have plenty of money to put behind for retirement. The cons of choosing this character, was that the school bills that I would have to pay to get into this work.
