Driving without using our hands has been a vision for many years and it is finally becoming a reality. Imagine, sitting in the driver seat and not driving but the car is moving; too good to be true? The past year has been nothing but positive results for the driverless car coming to dealerships. Ideas of making such a vehicle seems modern but can date back to the mid-‘20’s and early-1930’s (Albanesius). With that being said, it took almost 85 years to get the process going and make a fantasy into a reality. Although these cars make everyday lives easier, pros and cons are concerns to the public eye. The multiple companies competing to create the first successful, autonomous car are using complex technology to make this car operable; this means there will be extra costs when buying a driverless vehicle. First and foremost, the cost of buying and maintaining one can probably bruise your wallet. The technology used to add the driverless feature is complex and needs attention when even a minor error occurs; when lane monitors become faulty or when vehicle-to-vehicle communication is down, someone will need to fix them and the repairs aren’t going to be cheap (Hosansky). And how about the updating of the maps it uses; new roads and places are built every month and the computers need to get new information about those places and I am willing to bet that companies won’t update them for free. Also, companies are taking into consideration of removing the steering wheel, brake and accelerating pedals and even the gear shift; all they will put is an emergency shutoff and restart button in case something happens (Markoff). This sounds assuring but an even larger issue at hand is determining who would be held responsible in the event of a crash
Driverless cars are the technology of the future. There is no longer a need to drive using your hands, just type in your destination in the GPS, and the car gets you there. These cars are still being tested, but they are expected to get on the roads soon. There are some drawbacks that have held up the process to let these cars on the roads, but the companies will fix these problems. Driverless cars have a lower crash rate than humans, they are safe, and don’t make mistakes like people do on the road.

When there is road work, the car will not always know what to do, there is certain speed limits, things that are in the way of the road that the car will not always pick up and miss. With waether, it can get bad fast, especillay visibility issues. Rain can reduce the visibilty for the lasors to detect your surroundings. The more hi-tech the more reliable you are to get hacked. Essentially, drivers can program their destination into the car’s GPS system and then sit back and relax. Our future is intense and frightening, but overall, unpredictable. We will have driverless cars soon in our world. They will overtake our roads and means of transportation. In my opinion, I think there is both good and bad with these driverless cars. There is both pros and cons dealing with this future. This future for cars will reduce drunk driving, reduce traffic jams, and reduce expense on the driver and our planet. The downside however, will come with putting millions out of business. Driverless cars are technology, and technology is not perfect, it sometimes crashes and does not always work the way we want it to. We do know that humanity is not perfect either. Humanity makes mistakes just as much as technology. In recent discussions of growing technology, a controversial issue has been whether we are ready for the advancements of driverless vehicles.
