Driving without using our hands has been a vision for many years and it is finally becoming a reality. Imagine, sitting in the driver seat and not driving but the car is moving; too good to be true? The past year has been nothing but positive results for the driverless car coming to dealerships. Ideas of making such a vehicle seems modern but can date back to the mid-‘20’s and early-1930’s (Albanesius). With that being said, it took almost 85 years to get the process going and make a fantasy into a reality. Although these cars make everyday lives easier, pros and cons are concerns to the public eye. The multiple companies competing to create the first successful, autonomous car are using complex technology to make this car operable; this means there will be extra costs when buying a driverless vehicle. First and foremost, the cost of buying and maintaining one can probably bruise your wallet. The technology used to add the driverless feature is complex and needs attention when even a minor error occurs; when lane monitors become faulty or when vehicle-to-vehicle communication is down, someone will need to fix them and the repairs aren’t going to be cheap (Hosansky). And how about the updating of the maps it uses; new roads and places are built every month and the computers need to get new information about those places and I am willing to bet that companies won’t update them for free. Also, companies are taking into consideration of removing the steering wheel, brake and accelerating pedals and even the gear shift; all they will put is an emergency shutoff and restart button in case something happens (Markoff). This sounds assuring but an even larger issue at hand is determining who would be held responsible in the event of a crash
